Showcasing all the hard work that 4-H members complete throughout the year is the goal of the annual Chester County
4-H Fair. During the event, held at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4 to 9, youths were able to show the animals that they have been raising and training as well as display the
various non-animal projects they completed, ranging from sewing and crafts to growing vegetables.
Some projects are completed during club meetings, while others are worked on at home. “It depends

Compeer Chester County, which pairs trained adult volunteers with individuals in Chester County who are working towards mental health recovery, is currently seeking volunteer friends from the community. “Compeer,” which means “peer” or “companion,” is designed to help build self-esteem and
reduce loneliness in a person dealing with mental health challenges, promoting the person’s overall well-being.
Those seeking more information about Compeer as well as prospective volunteers who want to complete an application may visit www .mentalhealthpartnerships .org/programs-and-services /compeer.

After being located in a building on Twin Valley Road in Elverson since 2009, the Tri-County Heritage Library has opened at a new location.
The library, which features historical documents, artwork, photographs, newspapers and other artifacts relating to the history of Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties, opened on Aug. 12 at 219 Mill Road, Morgantown, next to Masthof Press and Bookstore.
The library, which was acquired by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) in April of 2021, is open to the public every Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m. or by appointment.
“We are still putting finishing touches on things,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “It took us two moves at two different times to keep everything organized. We (wanted) to put things right back on the shelves so we didn’t spend months going through boxes.”
Tribe Moving of Birdsboro, which helped facilitate the move, donated a portion of its services.
Inside the library, visitors will find an assortment of books to peruse. “We have books from Chester, Berks, Lancaster and Montgomery counties plus various books on Pennsylvania,” noted Zerr. “We have books on immigration; slavery; Native Americans; and World War I, World War II, the Civil War and other wars that are available to look through.”
on the club,” explained Toni Stuetz, Penn State Extension educator. “Every child that shows a dairy goat has to do a poster on some aspect of dairy goats. It could be about a breed or different parts of the goat. They present the posters at the club meeting and share their research and resources. Some of the kids do their projects at home as part of their learning.”
Lillian Petersheim of Elverson, a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club, showed the pig that she raised at the fair, and she also displayed several projects, including a floral arrangement and a small painting of a country sunset done in acrylic. “I was able to blend the colors without washing out my brush; it was a lot of fun to paint,” said Lillian, noting that she also added fireflies to the artwork. “Every time I see a sunset, I want to paint it.”
Also on display during
fair week were projects by the Southern Chester County 4-H Cloverbuds Club. “(Cloverbuds) is a noncompetitive induction to 4-H,” Stuetz said. “Cloverbuds is designed for children between 5 and 8 years old, and they get to explore all the different things that 4-H has to offer.”
In addition to projects, the fair included various livestock competitions, such as dairy, sheep, goat and swine shows, as well as a supreme livestock showmanship contest. The fair also included a Beef Skill-A-Thon and a Sheep & Goat Skill-AThon, during which 4-H members take a written test prior to showing their animals. “They match byproducts with which animal they come from and identify breeds. It is a knowledge test,” explained Rachel Stoltzfus, assistant leader of the Chester County Beef Club. “We will score them, and they get ribbons.”
“The test is probably harder because you have to share your knowledge, but showing is a bigger deal,” added Lillian. “You work with that pig (or other animal) all year long to get into the show.”
Cameron Johnson of Honey Brook, another member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and a student at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown, was on hand to show several hogs that he raised.
He noted that the judges assess the market hogs based on well-developed muscles and other factors like structural soundness and minimal excess fat. “They are looking for a muscular hog, with definition. You really want to see the shoulders and the rump,” he explained, noting that the pigs he raised averaged about 240 pounds each.
Cameron raised one pig this past year for a specific purpose - the pig was auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to support the medical expenses of a local 9-year-old child who had brain surgery. “Cameron
and his family and Cedar Meadow Meats donated the pig. He raised it, and it is being sold to benefit the young lady,” noted Audrey Reith, extension educator. “His act of kindness has touched many in our agricultural community.”
4-H is the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension.
The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and
health. 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 18. For more information about 4-H, call 610-696-3500 or visit https://extension. psu.edu/programs/4-h/ counties/chester. David Seel of Morgantown earned All-Metro Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Seel attends Muhlenberg College and is studying biology.
Seel was named all-region in the 800 for the third consecutive season. He ran 1:51.76 at the CC Championships, placing
second to the eventual national champion in the event, and broke a 22-year-old school record by finishing in 1:50.97 at the Widener Final Qualifier. Seel, who also won a bronze medal with the 4x400 relay team at the CC Championships, owns the school record in the 800 both indoors and outdoors.

While COVID-19 can still be a serious illness like pneumonia or the flu, the pandemic as we experienced it several years ago is over.
It was not too long ago, however, that masks were part of our daily lives and new phrases came into existence, like social distancing and contact tracing, which is letting people know you were exposed to COVID. We quickly had to master the art of meetings held via Zoom and many people began working at home.
During the pandemic, we were not allowed to walk the mall, visit our loved ones in the hospital or at
a retirement community, dine out at a restaurant, get our hair cut at the salon or go to church. Brides and grooms had to cancel weddings, and many businesses suffered because they could not be open. Only cardboard cutouts were allowed to attend professional sports games.
For students, the pandemic meant no in-person classes, no senior prom, no class trips. I remember my son doing jumping jacks in the kitchen during virtual gym class.
We stopped shaking hands; we loaded up on hand sanitizer. And there was a shortage of everyday necessities like toilet

MacKenzie Partsch of Birdsboro was recently named to the president’s list at Presbyterian College, Clinton, S.C.
Partsch achieved the honor by earning a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the spring 2025 semester.
Items that have been donated by the community are also housed in the building. “We have 40 family collections in our library and another 30 collections of businesses and nonprofit organizations,” said Zerr. “A collection can include family books, documents, ledgers and photos - an assortment of things that were given to us.”
Additional donations from the community are also being sought, especially items that have been made in the area. For example, one of the sections in the library features objects that were manufactured at local iron furnaces. “Our new library will also include a mini museum, which is a work in progress,” Zerr said. “We are looking to collect a few pieces of furniture in our museum - something that is something unique from the community.”
Other features in the library include a collection of arrowheads, old newspapers and one room that is dedicated to textiles and maps.
Area residents are invited to visit the library to research their family history or the history of local towns. “We easily have over 1,500 family names in our genealogical files,” Zerr pointed out. “People can also come to learn about Morgantown and Elverson. We have information
on every property in Morgantown with photos.”
“A family of a worker from Grace Mines recently donated a collection, including his first aid kit and dog tag and the manuals that the mine provided to their employees,” Zerr added. “A lot of families don’t want this stuff; we provide an outlet for these items to keep this (local history) alive.”
Zerr said the building was given a refresh before the library moved in. It is climate controlled to protect the items inside. New air-conditioning was installed along with new carpeting and LED lights. A photocopy machine is available on-site to use for a fee.
“It has a dedicated storage room for supplies. We have a small selection of maps and history books for sale. We have a worktable for people to do research,” Zerr noted. “It’s a big upgrade. It’s actually feels like a library.”
Guests may visit the library for free, but there is a research fee. HCVHA members are not required to pay the fee.
For more information, visit www.facebook .com/TriCountyHeritage Library. Those with questions, including those looking for a specific item from the library, may contact Zerr at mzerr@haycreek .org.
recently undergone a new look, which not only illustrates stories of friendship and hope, but also makes it quite easy to complete a volunteer application - all in one place,” said Donna Kueny, program manager.
Kueny explained that Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. A volunteer with Compeer Chester County is asked to commit approximately four hours per month to meet with their matched friend, who is referred to the pro-
paper and bread. The only outings we were allowed to enjoy, which became the highlight of the day, were trips to the grocery store, where the aisles were marked “one way” with arrows on the floor.
Our focus was on the dreaded color-coded system of shutdown. Red meant nothing was open, while yellow meant that things eased up a bit and green was the “oh, happy day” phase when businesses were allowed to reopen. This system varied state by state. I personally know two women who took a road trip to West Virginia one weekend to have their hair cut because that state went yellow before Pennsylvania did.
There are still positive remnants of the pandemic that have not left us. Much of what we did to pass the time during the lockdown has thankfully become part of everyday life today. Many people continue to focus on family activities like putting together puzzles or breaking out the old board games like Monopoly, Pictionary and Trivial Pursuit.
We continue to walk our dogs a lot, along the way meeting neighbors with their dogs, including neighbors from surrounding streets. We continue to visit local historic sites and parks that we discovered while on lockdown. We have found many a walking path in the area around scenic streams and waterways. Some of us have continued with
gram by a mental health professional. The commitment involves spending time with an adult who is dealing with issues such as social anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The specific times and activities for these meetings are decided by the volunteer and his or her friend. For example, pairs can have coffee, take a walk, go shopping or just enjoy a conversation.
“Volunteering for only four hours a month can dramatically change a life and reduce the stigma of

the hobbies that were resurrected during the pandemic, including crocheting or knitting or doing crafts.
We continue to Zoom with friends and relatives from out of state as a way to keep in touch. Virtual church also continues to be an option, which provides an option for people who are elderly, are unable to drive or are home recovering from an illness to attend Sunday services.
The pandemic taught us how to pivot, which became a popular word during the time, and to make the most of the resources we had at home. It also taught us to
mental illness,” said Kueny. Kueny provided comments from program participants following a recent survey: “It’s been an opportunity to make a true difference in two lives - my friend’s and my own,” and “Compeer is welcomingfriendly people, positive atmosphere, fun activities. I love it!”
In addition to one-onone interactions, Compeer also provides social outings for its program participants and their friends. In March, Compeer sponsored a bowling outing and pizza party at The Palace in
Downingtown. In September, Compeer will host an outdoor picnic.
Compeer Chester County, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024, is a program of Mental Health Partnerships and an affiliate of Compeer International. The program is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.
