“Words cannot express how grateful we are for the food bank. It has enabled us to eat three meals a day. You do such a great job. Thank you so much!”
“Your food bank has blessed my family beyond words. Because of it, my family is eating more vegetables and fruits and less baked goods. Thank you for all you do and a big thank you to all the volunteers.”
These are two of the positive text messages received by Ken Ross, board chair of the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP), from clients served by the pantry this summer. The texts were published by Ross in the pantry’s summer 2021 report.
To further illustrate the effectiveness of the pantry, Ross reported that more than 100 families were surveyed anonymously in May and June to assess their approval of pantry services. “The overall satisfaction rate of 98% was certainly gratifying as were the 31% making positive write-in comments,” Ross stated. Comments included the following: “Pantry is great. Thank you”; “Wonderful service”; “Smooth, well organized”; “Needs always met”; and “Love all the volunteers.”
The HBFP serves 10,000 pounds of food a month to approximately 250 families, assisted by 80 volunteers. As indicated by the comments, Ross said, the pantry’s success can be credited to the volunteers. “Our fabulous volunteers are often referenced as they are the backbone of the work that we do,” Ross stated. He encourages people to witness the volunteers’ dedication by viewing a video on the pantry’s Facebook page that was posted on May 27 when volunteers distributed food to 300 clients during a severe rainstorm.
Ross concluded the report by stating, “Honey Brook Food Pantry is well prepared to do whatever is needed to address food insufficiency in the area. The community can be 100% confident that we will be there each week with a great supply of healthy food whenever it is needed, especially in emergency situations.”
The HBFP is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
The pantry is currently seeking help from local gardeners or farmers who have extra produce to donate. Produce can be dropped off on distribution days prior to 10 a.m. or 4 p.m.
HBFP is also planning two fall fundraisers at the Honeybrook Golf Club - the 2021 Music Fest/Micro Fest on Saturday, Oct. 2, and its annual golf outing on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
For more information about the HBFP, visit www.honey brookfoodpantry.org or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. For upto-date information about food distributions, call 610273-6102 or contact Ross at KRoss1414@aol.com.

Rite Aid To Help Children’s Hospitals
Rite Aid’s annual in-store customer fundraising campaign benefiting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals will run through Saturday Aug. 28. All funds donated by customers will benefit 53 children’s hospitals providing lifesaving care and services for children in Rite Aid communities. This marks the 27th year for Rite Aid’s annual campaign, with customer support helping the company and its public charity, The Rite Aid Foundation, to raise and donate more than $100 million overall to CMN Hospitals.
During this year’s campaign, customers can donate during every in-store transaction at Rite Aid. In addition to patient services, charitable care and equipment, donations help pioneer research that transforms how hospitals care for children not just in their youth, but throughout their lives.
All donations made during Rite Aid’s campaign will stay local, supporting the children’s hospitals in customers’ communities. To learn more about CMN Hospitals, visit www.cmnhospitals.org.

Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline approved the awarding of $4.2 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants at a recent public commissioners’ meeting. The grants are made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program, which offers funding to municipalities and nonprofit land preservation organizations. This commitment of county funds will help leverage an additional $10 million of non-county funds.
The grants include the following.
East Bradford Township will receive more than $1.32 million to purchase the 156-acre Starr Farm property for public recreation and natural resource protection, expanding the existing 25-acre Starr Farm Park and providing connections to several other township parks and preserves.
East Pikeland Township will receive $92,390 for the construction of the Ridge Road Park, a new 16-acre park, featuring a community garden and orchard, a dog park, and paved trails. The township will also be given $250,000 for the first phase of development of the new 115-acre Hidden River Park and Preserve, including a 47-space parking lot and 2 miles of multi-use trails, including a connection to the county’s Schuylkill River Trail.
West Pikeland Township will receive $80,727 for Phase 2 improvements at the new 62acre Walnut Lane Park, including adding the wearing course of the paved drive and parking area, pavement markings, shade trees, buffer trees, benches, and an information kiosk.
The French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust will receive $180,964 for a 57-acre conservation easement on the Maxwell property in West Vincent Township, with the goals of protecting agricultural resources and strengthening agricultural infrastructure.
The Green Valleys Watershed Association will be awarded $14,500 for the Horse-Shoe Trail Improvements at Welkinweir, a 224acre publicly accessible nature preserve in East Nantmeal Township. Nearly 1 mile of new trail will be established, including re-routing over 3,000 linear feet of the trail onto Welkinweir, eliminating a steeply eroding section of the trail currently traversing non-protected, private land.
Natural Lands will receive money for three projects, including $50,000 to construct the Bryn Coed Preserve - Beaver Hill parking lot in West Vincent Township, along with a kiosk, parking lot sign, and trail signage, as well as $18,000 for a portion of the transaction expenses involved with a fully donated conservation easement on the 26-acre Isabella Furnace site, which is on the National Register of Historic Places in West Nantmeal Township.
Chester County has funded the preservation of over 57,000 acres of farmland, open space, nature preserves, and parks in partnership with farmers, municipalities, nonprofits, and landowners in all 73 municipalities.
