Fundraiser To Feature Barbecue, Mansion Tours And More By Francine Fulton
In addition to the majestic Langoma mansion at St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson, which was built in 1894 by the Potts family of local ironmasters, the site includes a heated indoor swimming pool that is open to the public for swim lessons, lap swimming and family swims. To help maintain the pool, a festival fundraiser, “Save Our Pool,” has been set for Saturday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the retreat center. The festival will feature an outdoor barbecue and vendors offering crafts and yard sale items, as well as tours of the historic mansion. Visitors will also be able to swim in the pool. All proceeds will be used for the pool’s re-roofing and to restore air circulation in the pool, which goes from 3 to 9 feet in depth.
The pool is located behind the Langoma mansion. The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence acquired the mansion in 1948 to be used as a training and education center for mentally challenged children. The pool was built in the 1970s for the children to use for swimming and therapy. In 1984, the youngsters were transferred to a new complex built by the Diocese of Philadelphia in Springfield, Delaware County. The property, including the pool, was given a new purpose as a retreat center and senior living facility. Pool memberships are available, or people can pay an admission fee per visit. Since the center is nonprofit, all proceeds from admission fees are put into the pool’s upkeep and maintenance. “Kathy (Manidis, pool manager) said that 7,000 (people) come to the pool See Fundraiser pg 5
The public will be able to tour the Langoma mansion at the St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center in Elverson as part of a “Save Our Pool” festival fundraiser on Aug. 10. Also featured will be a yard sale and craft sale, an outdoor barbecue and swimming in the site’s indoor pool.
