Story Time at Boone Area Library on July 21 was all about dogs as children heard caninerelated stories and had an opportunity to visit with Pfiona, a therapy dog, and her handler Wendy Pfluglar.
Pfiona is a 3-year-old Brittany, which is a type of spaniel known for bird hunting. She is also Farm Dog Certified, has won medals in dog shows and is a trained tracking dog. “Because they are bird dogs and because she likes to hunt, we had to give her a job,” said Pfluglar. “She has many ‘jobs,’ but we started off with obedience (training).”
Pfluglar told the children that therapy dogs must be friendly and calm, noting that Pfiona is certified through Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs based in New Jersey.
“You want the dog to be sound around people and around other dogs,” she explained. “They also have to be around (people using) wheelchairs, crutches and walkers. (Therapy dogs) can be alert, but they can’t start jumping.”
As a librarian and media specialist in the Spring-Ford Area School District, Pfluglar takes Pfiona to many school functions, including football games and other sporting events. She has also taken Pfiona to meet with hospital patients

Back in 2010, when Drew and Cindy Metcalf began their ministry to children in orphanages in Guatemala, they held a fundraiser called “Walk to Guatemala.” Fast forward to 2021, and the Metcalfs’ ministry moved to The Haft, a 105-acre converted sheep farm in Bradford County where Drew and Cindy help families find restoration and healing from trauma. “When we were in Guatemala, we realized one of the best ways to help children
is to help their parents heal,” shared Cindy.
“We provide counseling and ministry services for free as part of our Christian ministry,” added Drew.
To help support the Metcalfs’ work at The Haft, a 100-mile bicycle ride around Lancaster County is being planned for Saturday, Aug. 16, beginning at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Slower riders may choose to start at 6 a.m., and faster riders may start at 7 a.m. A family and friends ride

Those interested in fostering a cat or kitten for the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County in Birdsboro are invited to attend a Kitten Sprinkle being presented by the Friends of ARL on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Inn at Centre Park, 730 Centre Ave., Reading. The ARL has held a kitten shower in the past, but this is the first time for a sprinkle event, which is typically held for parents who have other children. “(A sprinkle) is a secondary (shower) to get us to meet some new fosters potentially and promote the program,” said Alyssa Budock, ARL media and communications manager. “There won’t be adoptable kittens there. It will be fosters and the kittens they are currently fostering in their homes.”
According to www.berksarl .org/foster, fosters must be at least 18 years old and have an ability to travel to and from the ARL, located at 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro. While a specific foster room is not required, there should be space in a foster home that is separate from the other animals that live in the house.
Supplies are provided. “We provide food, the litter and the medication,” said Heather Potteiger, ARL office and purchasing manager, who also fosters kittens for the ARL. “We need someone to (offer) space outside the kennel.”
Potteiger noted that some people may be reluctant to foster
because it may be difficult to give the animals to their new owners. However, realizing the animal will find a permanent loving home makes it worthwhile. “It gets easier as you do it, and it’s (rewarding) to be part of that process,” she stated.
Among the cats currently in a foster home is Little Boy, a 3-year-old male tuxedo cat. “One of our longest-term residents right now is a cat named
Little Boy who came into the shelter back at the end of March,” explained Budock. “He was a little bit more scared and shut down in the shelter, so we were fortunate to place him in the foster home to help him gain some confidence, and the foster has said he is doing great. He is a low-maintenance guy just looking for his very own home.”
Those interested in Little Boy may email adoption@berksarl.org to set up a time to meet him.
Normally, the Berks ARL mobile adoption unit is set up at special events, but Budock reported that it will not be on hand during the Kitten Sprinkle due to limited space.
The vehicle, housing a number of adoptable cats and kittens, made a stop recently at French Creek State Park in Elverson during a “Pancakes and Pets” breakfast offered by the site’s park rangers. “It’s our way to get out to community (members) who might not necessarily be able to make it to our facility,” noted Potteiger.
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is a nonprofit organization that cares for more than 5,000 animals each year, helping them to find permanent, loving homes or reuniting them with their owners.
The ARL also offers human/animal support resources, low-cost veterinary services, animal control programs and animal cruelty and humane law investigation throughout Berks County.

to Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community in East Earl and back to Petra will begin at 1 p.m. A color ride for children will be held on the Petra campus at 2 p.m. There is a cost to take part in the ride. Riders who intend to do the 100-mile route and register by Friday, Aug. 1, will receive a free T-shirt. T-shirts will be available for purchase on the day of the ride. A discount will be offered to riders signing up in groups of five or more. To register for the ride, readers may visit www.bike4charity.com.
According to Drew and Cindy, this new fundraiser is loosely based on a ride that was once held from Lancaster to The Haft. “That was over 100 miles,” noted Cindy.

“It was out of reach for most people,” stated Drew. “There were mountains.” To make the fundraiser accessible to more people, the ride was moved to the greater New Holland area. “We want it to be for all Lancaster County to want to ride
the loop around Lancaster,” stated Drew, who added that the variety of rides being offered is meant to open the event to more people. Organizers hope to have all the riders back at Petra for the color ride. “So everyone can ride through the color stations,” explained Drew. Those taking part in the color ride are encouraged to wear white T-shirts to the event. “It’s like a color (5K), but for bikers,” said Drew.
According to Drew, The Haft is busy. “It’s full,” he stated. “We have individuals and families coming, and people come for rest, retreat, and restoration.”
In addition to counseling, The Haft offers an opportunity to take part in equine therapy, as well as spending time with a number of other therapy animals, including goats, chickens, and guinea hens. The grounds feature a 10-acre pond for kayaks, canoes, and fishing, as well as trails for hiking. “We have a prayer trail,” said Cindy, who noted that Daniel Kolb, a member of the wood shop at Garden Spot Village, has created signs with Bible verses on them to station along the trail.
Cindy. “We love to worship and play guitars around the fire.”
A new addition this year are two cabins on the lake for rent, which will offer a new income source to help support the work of The Haft.
“We are hoping to have people come and stay,” said Cindy, who added that the spot by the lake is great for getting away.
“There isn’t even much cell service here, so put your cellphone away and focus on whatever God is bringing up inside you,” pointed out Drew.
The mission of The Haft is close to both Drew and Cindy’s hearts.
“We want to help the whole family be stable and able to raise kids in an environment where they can really flourish,” said Cindy. “So many are in traumatic situations so if we can help the whole family to heal from their own traumas and be a strong family together that is the support system that God designed,” she stated.

Over the years, Cindy has been known for her music ministry, and she said that music is still part of many evenings at The Haft. “Our son Isaiah has gotten into that, and now I join in with him,” she said. Cindy shared that Isaiah was about 3 years old when the family headed to Guatemala. “I used to do the leading (in the music ministry), but now he is leading,” said

Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe officially proclaimed the week of Aug. 3 to Saturday, Aug. 9, as Farmers Market Week, celebrating the contributions of local markets to the county’s economy, food system, and sense of community.
Recognizing Farmers Market Week are (front, from left) Melissa Harrop, AgConnect communications coordinator; Abby Wisely, AgConnect program coordinator; Christy Campli, owner of Growing Roots Partners; Commissioner Marian Moskowitz; (back) Commissioner Eric Roe; and Commissioner Josh Maxwell.
Chester County is home to 10 active farmers markets offering an array of agricultural and handcrafted goods, including fresh produce, meats, dairy, baked treats, flowers, pantry staples, and wines. These markets serve as channels for distributing locally made and grown products while fostering economic growth and providing consumers with fresh, nutritious food.
The proclamation also recognized the work of AgConnect, a county-supported initiative that offers funding, training, and promotional tools
to strengthen local agriculture. Programs like AgConnect support direct-to-consumer sales and help cultivate a thriving, resilient farming community.
Farmers Market Week was created to honor the farmers, artisans, and organizers who make these markets possible and encourage residents to celebrate and support them.
For more information about AgConnect’s programs and to access the interactive Chester County Farm Guide, visit www .go-agconnect.org or follow AgConnect on Facebook, Insta gram, or LinkedIn.
and to visit Amity Place, a senior living community in Douglassville. “They do take to her because she is a smaller size,” she noted. “I think a lot of older people have had this breed because they are hunting dogs.”
Children were able to visit with and pet Pfiona. “When you go up to a dog, you don’t go and put your hand right in their face,”Pfluglar told the children. “You pet her on her side.”
Children also heard two stories read by Amber Hamel, the library’s youth program coordinator - “Hot Dog” by Doug Salati and “Dogs” by
Emily Gravett - and they completed a dog puppet-making craft.
Miss Amber’s Story Time is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. The program is designed for children up to age 5, but youngsters of all ages are welcome. No registration is required. In addition to story time, Hamel oversees Helping Hands Bingo, which is open to youngsters and senior citizens. Helping Hands Bingo takes place on the first Friday of each month from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
