A New Approach to Bluegrass

Concerts in the Park series will continue on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a performance from “Ironwood Drive,” a Lancaster-based five-part bluegrass outfit that is trying to redefine how people think of the genre.
“We are going to approach traditional bluegrass in a new light than what your grandparents listened to,” said Brandon Fox, the band’s bassist and primary scheduler. “There’s stigma with bluegrass sometimes that the music is slow and outdated, and it is our goal as musicians to bring that music to life, to bring new faces to bluegrass, and
to approach it in a way that is both relatable and fun.”
The series began with performances by Poor Man’s Gambit on June 14 and Westtown Road Band

Every year, millions of Americans travel great distances for mission trips internationally and domestically. Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond (MTBB) does things a little bit differently.
Instead of hopping on a plane and travelling to another continent, MTBB helps local families with service projects that include painting, repairing decks, installing flooring, replacing siding and doing yard work.
This year, 142 volunteers worked on 63 sites over the course of four days from July 15 to 18,
American Legion Set for Annual Jamboree

A display of trucks and Jeeps, live music, food and an opportunity to win prizes will be featured at a Country Jamboree being presented on Saturday, Aug. 15, from noon to 6 p.m. at Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537, 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown.
This year’s event will be the third annual jamboree. The jamboree is an extension of the immensely popular annual motorcycle shows presented by the American Legion Riders.
“Me and one other guy who was a commander at the time thought we needed something else to fill the summer up and raise more money for the post to be able to take care of itself, if you will,” said Ron Harner, commander of Post 537.
The addition has been a success. Last year, the post had over 30 vehicles come out for the jamboree, primarily Jeeps of all eras.
Admission for spectators is free, but Jeep and truck owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Trophies will be awarded in several categories, including best Jeep, Ford, GM, Ram and import. There will also be a commander’s choice, people’s choice and kids’ choice award, as well as an honor for the owner of the vehicle who drove the furthest to get to the show.
The awards are sponsored in part by local businesses and individuals.
“Usually, we’ll have a jar for kids to put numbers in,” Harner said of the kids’ choice award.

Anchored Ministries Readies for Annual Back-to-School Event

Anchored Ministries will hold its annual back-toschool program from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Hopewell Church, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson.
The program provides
free backpacks, school supplies and clothing to students in need within the Twin Valley and Daniel Boone school districts, including private and homeschooled students.
“On that day, we will distribute the backpacks and any school supplies they may need,” said Kurt Werner, Anchored Ministries’ director of development.
Those who sign up for the program will be assigned a time slot to come in and select their items. Werner said that quality items will
be set aside for each time slot and that food will be served to participants depending on what time slot they come in.
“It doesn’t get to be a mad rush,” he said. “We’re really looking to avoid that Black Friday experience. ... We make sure that we keep a good supply of great items for people to pick up.”
To be eligible for the program, families need to meet certain income or assistance guidelines, such as receiving SNAP benefits or having children in foster care.
During the back-toschool event, there will also be a touch-a-truck event taking place at the same location. In the past, local police have also attended the event.
Anchored Ministries is a primarily volunteer-based ministry that operates 10 programs, primarily in the Twin Valley community. Among its other programs are its mobile clothing closet, which offers new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, and its prom boutiques, which helps local high-schoolers prepare for dances and get required clothing items.
The ministry is also heavily involved in the annual Elverson day and operates a “Food Truck Takeover” fundraiser at Twin Valley High School annually.
Anchored Ministries is seeking donations for the back-to-school program. Items should be brand-new and in good condition. There are typically drop boxes in local businesses, but Werner asked that those interested in donating visit www.anchoredministries.org or its social media pages for updated, accurate information on how to do so.

The ministry is also seeking sponsors for the event. There are three tiers to sponsorship, perks of which include signage at the event, social media highlights, logos on printed materials and on the ministry’s website and placement in the next newsletter.

primarily in Birdsboro and the surrounding areas of Reading, Pottstown and Douglassville.
“The idea was having mission trips here at home,” said MTBB board member Stuart Wells. “There’s plenty of things and plenty of people that need help. ... Why spend the money and do all of that when there are people who need help right here in our backyard.”
Early in the year, those in need submit assistance applications to MTBB. Then, during the four-day event, MTBB volunteers will donate their time to complete the service projects. Materials for the projects are wholly donated by community sponsors.
The number of volunteers has increased steadily since the program’s inception in 2014, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19. Many of the volunteers come from local churches, which contribute to the program, but there is no designated
religious affiliation with MTBB; anyone is welcome to volunteer or request help.
“The point was to try and live out what Christ’s teachings were and what it says in the Gospel,” Wells said. “You’re supposed to be out loving your neighbor.
“It’s not about being part of a club or something,” he went on. “You don’t have to be. The point is to be there for people.”
Each morning, volunteers gathered at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, where church members prepared breakfast for the volunteers, who then departed to the various work sites with provided packed lunches. The days also ended at St. Mark’s, where participants took part in a prayer service and ate dinner.
MTBB maintains storage sheds at St. Mark’s where building materials and paint are stored for the various projects. St. Mark’s was also the location of one of the service projects this year; vol-
unteers made catnip-filled toys for the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, providing enrichment for shelter animals while they await adoption.
Many of the volunteers are of retirement age, but there’s also younger, even college-age, men and women among the 142 volunteers.
There was a wide array of volunteers at a home in Reading, where MTBB repaired a loose porch railing, removed and replaced the front steps, reinforced a shed door and replaced skirting to prevent wild critters from taking res-
idence under the home.
“It’s very satisfying to get out and be able to make a difference on houses,” said Greg Frey, a pastor.
“It’s a mixture of the community of people you work with and wanting to help people,” said Mark Smith, a student at Susquehanna University. “Also, me being a young guy, if I shut up for a while, I learn some things.”
In its 13 years of existence, MTBB has helped over a thousand local families with projects that range from groundskeeping to safety issues. It has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

The Veterans Temporary Assistance (VTA) program provides eligible Pennsylvania veterans and their surviving dependents with financial relief for necessities of life such as food, shelter, fuel, and clothing. Since the inception of the VTA, DMVA has awarded more than $8.6 million to assist over 9,650 service members, veterans, and

Eligible veterans or their survivors may qualify for up to $1,600 in a 12-month period. Faith Mattox-Baldini
Chester County has appointed Faith Mattox-Baldini as the new county solicitor. She had served as the deputy county solicitor before being appointed acting county solicitor in April. Mattox-Baldini joined the Solicitor’s Office in 2021 after working in the District Attorney’s Office. She began working for the county in 2017. She is a graduate of Chestnut Hill College and received her law degree from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law.

Ironwood Drive was formed in 2017 as the “Werner Family Band” before restructuring into Ironwood Drive in 2021. Originally a household band, vocalist and fiddler Stephen Werner, banjoist Gideon Werner and mandolin player Silas Werner have all been part of the outfit since its inception.
Presently, the brothers are joined by Fox, as well as guitarist Jordan Beedle. Beedle, who works as a paramedic in Delaware when he’s not with Ironwood Drive, is the newest member of the band.
The band’s present name is derived from the street name of the group’s beloved music teacher in Annville.
“He taught many of us at a younger age,” Fox explained. “He’s both a fantastic musician as well as a phenomenal teacher. ... As the band grew, we were looking for a name that was outside the
family name.”
Ironwood Drive has played all over the East Coast, making its name playing at local fairs, festivals and churches. The outfit has become a regular fixture at events like the Elizabethtown Fair and Intercourse Heritage Days.
The group has seen increased recent success after winning the “Fan Favorite” award at the 2025 Podunk Bluegrass Festival in Connecticut.
“Bluegrass is something that’s really continued to grow in an age where everything is overproduced and everything is AI,” Fox said. “Bluegrass has a unique way of being just really raw and creative. ... We won fan favorite as one of the performing artists (at Podunk), and since then it’s given us opportunities to play festivals in states and more events than just what’s in our backyard.”
The band currently has two albums, a self-titled record in 2022 and “A Place Called Home,” which was released in 2024.
The group’s third album, “Gettin’ Outta Here,” will be released physically on Thursday, Aug. 6, and will be published on streaming platforms by the end of the month.
For the upcoming record, the band worked with Adam Steffey, formerly of Mountain Heart and Allison Krauss & Union Station, as well as sound engineer Aaron Ramsey, currently on tour with Dan Tyminski, via Mountain Fever Studios.
At the Honey Brook show, Fox said that the crowd can expect a strong mix of Ironwood Drive’s original songs and some more familiar bluegrass classics that everyone can sing and dance along to.
“High energy is the word I’m looking for, particularly when it pertains to this genre,” Fox explained. “It’s our goal to go up there and sweat to give the crowd their money’s worth.”
Physical copies of the upcoming album, as well as merchandise for the band, will be available for purchase at the show.
The program will provide students with all of the supplies they need for a strong start to the upcoming school year.

“They’re just able to be kids, be students and focus on what needs to be focused on,” Werner said. “It helps remove potential stigmas that are out there and makes sure that they have the best possible experience. Being part of that is huge for us.”
Program to Focus on Colonial Taverns
The Friends of Hopewell Furnace will hold a presentation, “Colonial Taverns: Where a Revolution Was Brewing,” on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. The program will take place at the Hopewell Furnace Visitor Center, 2 Mark Bird Lane,
Elverson. Chester County Park Ranger Jay Erb will speak about Colonial taverns, which were the site of conversations that led to the American Revolution.
Admission is free. Seating is limited.

Food offered for sale during the day will be provided by Joanna Store’s food truck. Beverages, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, will be served as well.
There will also be a Chinese-style auction with gifts donated by Post 537 members.

cle cleaning supplies in it,” Harner said. “Then you buy a block of tickets, and then each prize will have a bag in front of it.”
Information will be available for people interested in becoming a member of the American Legion. The American Legion is a veterans’ organization, but social memberships are available to others. The post also includes the Sons of the American Legion, which is for members whose parents served in the U.S. military; the ladies auxiliary; and the American Legion Riders motorcycle group.
“If you’re a vet or son or daughter of a vet, and you’re not a member, we’d like to have you stop by and check us out,” Harner said.
