Mission Trip Birdsboro Volunteers Help The Community By Francine Fulton

Although Mission Trip Birdsboro (MTB) had a different look this year because of COVID-19, the volunteer effort continued as more than 100 volunteers performed community

service projects for 23 local homeowners. From July 22 to 26, volunteers performed tasks such as painting, gardening, power washing and building a handicapped-accessible ramp, all while wearing masks and practicing social distancing. “Everything was exterior this year, explained Natalie Aaron, chair of the social media/promotion team. “(Volunteers) did a lot of painting, shrubbery removal, weed pulling and gardening. At one home they filled potholes in the driveway and painted a shed. Now in its seventh year, Mission Trip Birdsboro began in 2014 as an effort by St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), Birdsboro, as a way to help those unable to care for their homes, See Mission Trip Birdsboro pg 2

Gardens Grow Food For Pantry Clients By Francine Fulton

MCC

Clients of the Honey Brook Food Pantry are now receiving fresh produce along with their nonperishable food items as part of the pantry’s Garden For Life Program. Currently, community gardens dedicated to growing food

for the pantry are located at the Honey Brook Borough Park and at the Honey Brook Township building. The program started out several years ago when families were provided seedlings, seeds, soil and containers in order to grow some of their own produce at home. Children were also given their own gardening supplies. “During distribution days, kids would decorate their containers and fill them with soil and a seedling and take it home to grow a tomato plant or green peppers, explained pantry volunteer Kris Chiappa, garden coordinator. “Last year, we had 50 families involved between the families and the kids’ gardens. This year, because of the social distancing, See Gardens pg 10

Becky Zeeger, a member of the board of directors of the Honey Brook Food Pantry, works in one of the two gardens where fresh produce is raised for pantry clients.

Walking Club Forms At Church By Francine Fulton

A group of friends from St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro have started a walking club, and members of the community are welcome to participate. The group, known fondly by the name “Onward, Christian Soldiers, walks every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot surrounding the church while keeping socially distant. Walks are not held in the event of rain. Margaret Care, a member of the walking club, explained that the group formed in March when the stay-athome order was issued. “When this virus landed in our country and all the restrictions were put into place, as a senior, my life changed and I know some of my friends and members in See Walking Club pg 2

50 Years Of Plenty And Gratitude Shady Maple Celebrates Milestone By Ann Mead Ash

In 1962, Henry and Edna Martin opened a produce stand along Route 23 in East Earl, under the shade of two large maple trees in their front yard. By the late 1960s, the Martins’ daughter, Miriam, had married Lebanon County native Marvin Weaver, and the pair had taken over the stand. According to Ashley Hopkins, marketing manager with Shady Maple Company, Marvin had a saying: “Pile it high, and watch it fly. The saying See Shady Maple pg 7

The Weaver family, including (front, from left) Miriam, Marvin, (back) Phillip, Curt, and Linford, are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Shady Maple Farm Market as a produce stand owned by Miriam’s parents, Henry and Edna Martin.
