STORIES IN THE SHADE

Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, will offer Stories in the Shade with Miss Jennifer on Wednesdays, Aug. 1 and 8, at 10 a.m. Children are invited to join Miss Jennifer for stories, songs, and crafts outside when weather permits. On Aug. 8, the Story Time Summer Party will be held. Attendees should bring a blanket for sitting in the grass. Stories in the Shade is designed for preschoolers, but people of all ages are welcome to attend. For details, call 610-273-3303. AUGUST HIKES

The Berks Strollers have posted two upcoming events. The group will hike the Exeter Scenic River Trail in Mount Penn on Saturday, Aug. 4. The group will meet at 9 a.m. at the Exeter Trail parking lot on West 47th Street (Gibraltar Road). Those who are traveling from Route 724 should note that the bridge is closed. Volunteers Take Part In Mission Trip Birdsboro By Francine Fulton

Wearing matching blue T-shirts that read “Created by God - Built for a Purpose,� volunteers with Mission Trip Birdsboro were out in local neighborhoods from July 18 to 21 performing home improvement tasks for people in need and completing projects in the community. Each day began with breakfast served by volunteers at the Birdsboro Masonic Lodge, located next to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), Birdsboro. Volunteers then traveled to the various worksites to complete the tasks and then returned to the lodge later in the day for dinner and faith enrichment activities. Operation Birdsboro concluded on July 22 with a celebration meal at the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department that was attended by volunteers, guests and recipients of help. Volunteers with Mission Trip Birdsboro completed various projects at the homes of local residents in need and in the community. At each worksite they posted a sign, which read “God’s Hands at Work.�

LOCAL SITE

1130 Old River Road, Gibraltar, will host a presentation about Historic Poole Forge on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Dawn Rise Ekdahl, executive director of Poole Forge, will discuss the site and how the ironmaster’s house, tenant houses, and surrounding park were restored and became a popular gathering place for the whole community. Churchtown Day will take place on Saturday, Aug 4. The community is invited. The event will begin at 6 a.m. with breakfast at the Caernarvon Fire Company, 2145 Main St. The meal will include pancakes, sausage, fruit, orange juice and coffee. Breakfast will be served until 10 a.m. A flea market will be held at 7 a.m. at the Caernarvon Historical Society, 2148 Main St. Yard sales will take place throughout Churchtown. Two United States Army veterans who served together during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II have continued their friendship for more than 70 years. Eugene Morell, 92, was only 18 when the battle took place, and Ira Needham, 99, was 25. The pair recently met in person when Morell traveled from New York with his granddaughter and her family to meet with Needham in his home in Honey Brook. The Wild Hymns will take the stage on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 5:30 p.m. as part of the free Honey Brook Borough Summer Concert Series. The concert will take place in the borough park and is open to the public. In lieu of an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry. There will be a collection bin at each of the concerts this summer. The Wild Hymns, from the York area, perform the original songs of lead singer Megan Woodland Hewitt, who also plays the guitar. Also featured in the band are Megan’s husband, Jeff Hewitt, who plays lead guitar; Alex White on drums; Robert Shuckle on See The Wild Hymns pg 8
