Getting adoptable pets out in the community to help them find permanent homes is one of the goals of the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County’s mobile adoption unit.
The vehicle, housing a number of adoptable cats and kittens, made a stop at French Creek State Park in Elverson during a “Pancakes and Pets” breakfast offered by the site’s park rangers on July 19.
“We usually do two to three events each month,” noted Heather Potteiger, ARL office and purchasing manager, adding that this is the first time that the mobile unit has visited French Creek State Park. “We are able to take the mobile unit out for adoptions and for microchipping and clinics. It’s our way to get out to community (members) who might not necessarily be able to make it to our facility.”

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels worked side by side this summer during Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond (MTBB), an annual effort that offers free home repairs to residents in need, including those who are elderly, are disabled or have financial struggles.
Now in its 12th year, MTBB
sent 152 volunteers out to work on 50 projects in the community from July 16 to 19. This year’s volunteers wore bright orange T-shirts, which featured the equation “1 Mind Plus 1 Voice (equals) 2 Glorify God,” based on the Bible verse Romans 15:6. Each work site also included a sign that stated, “God’s Hands at Work.”

Members of the Caernarvon Historical Society will present Churchtown Day, featuring community yard sales as well as a pancake breakfast prepared at the Caernarvon Fire Company, on Saturday, Aug. 2. The event will be held rain or shine. This is the 41st year for Churchtown Day, which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in August. Yard sales will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities and at Caernarvon Township Park, which is where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. A highlight of the event this year will be the Caernarvon Historical Society’s own flea market held at its headquarters, 2148 Main St., Narvon. “We had (the flea market) inside and outside. This year, it will be inside,” noted Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian. “People can walk around and pick up what they want and then pay for it (at the cashier). The front doors will be open.” Items for sale in the society’s building will include frames; toys; books; housewares, including glassware; and seasonal decor, including Christmas ornaments, Easter items and Halloween decorations. “Everything (for sale) was a donation,” Styer said, noting that all items will be reasonably priced. State Rep. Mark M. Gillen recently trained with Pittsburgh firefighters at the Allegheny County Fire Academy. The training was a hands-on exercise in full turnout gear and air pack, and one of the exercises required crawling on hands and knees in a smoke-filled room while attempting to extract a dummy serving as a fire victim.
Gillen is a chairman of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness committee.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers real-time communication during unexpected traffic backlogs.
The free service is available 24/7 and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlogs. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, travelers may text “info” to 47676. Users are walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once the information is confirmed, the service provides automated
updates every 15 to 20 minutes, including location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times, and roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate the service for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.
In early June, Paul Miller’s Law went into effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.

Our community papers (Merchandiser, Advertiser, Pennysaver and Community Courier) had a strong showing at the Best of the Best Association of Community Publishers (ACP) 2024 awards competition. ACP represents community publications from coast to coast, reaching millions of homes on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis. A few of our 2024 awards include the following:
Among the projects were rebuilding a rotting deck and staining it, as well as yard work, including mulching and weeding. All services were provided at no cost. In addition, volunteers prayed and interacted with the homeowners.
Participating as volunteers for the second year were local homeschool students Gabriella Discala and Caleb Sotomayor, who were helping site leader Mark Hile. “It’s so much fun working with them and teaching them,” said Hile. “It’s about life skills. Someday they will have their own house, and they will remember doing this.”
“You learn a lot by working with others,” added volunteer George Sweeton, who helped build an outdoor set of stairs and worked on a deck repair along with his son, Jonathan Sweeton.
Local churches assisted during the multi-day project by providing meals for volunteers. Immaculate Conception Church in Douglassville hosted MTBB’s closing celebration on July 20.
Local businesses donated mulch, lumber and other materials, as well as snacks for the workers. MTBB maintains storage sheds at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, where volunteers gathered each morning to begin their workday.
According to Stuart Wells, MTBB board member, a lesser-known aspect of MTBB is that each year there is also an indoor mission project to address community needs. The indoor project is designed to provide a vol-
unteer opportunity in the event of inclement weather or for those who would like an alternative to working out of doors in the summer heat.
This year, the indoor mission project was filling bags of supplies, including toiletries, laundry detergent, new socks, school supplies and other essentials, for Daniel Boone School Area District’s Caring Closet.
“The school district has Caring Closets located in each of its middle and high school buildings to support students in need,” explained Wells. “These closets are a valuable resource that are stocked with nonperishable food and personal care items.
School counselors are available to help economically disadvantaged students access what they need to be
able to succeed in school.”
Typically, the high school closet is open on the last Monday of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. at Door 10 of Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St., Birdsboro. During the summer months, fresh vegetables harvested from the gardens at the elementary schools are available for families each week.
For more information about the Caring Closet, to donate or to receive help, contact Ashley Griffith, district wellness coordinator, at ashley.griffith@dboone .org or contact Hopewell Love Community Services at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 610-582-8167 or hopewelllovecs@gmail.com. it home the same day after completing an adoption profile and meeting with the ARL adoption counselors. “We do the same thing at the shelter. Everyone we bring here today can go home if someone is interested,” said Potteiger. “We also do some education and talk about the programs we have.”
The air-conditioned mobile vehicle, which was unveiled in April of 2024, can house up to 18 kennels, which vary in size to accommodate different animals. The adoptable pets can be seen from the outside of the unit. The vehicle also has an exam table and a refrigerator to store vaccines and other medications.
Staff members and volunteers are on hand to help whenever the mobile unit is scheduled. Additional volunteers are needed. “We have a volunteer coordinator, Jen Raney, and we have online profiles that a person would fill out to let us know what their interests are and what their time schedules are,” said Potteiger. “We have volunteers that come to events, do dishes and laundry and volunteers that do data entry, write thank you notes and make phone calls. We always try to match people where their interests are.”
She noted that the Berks ARL has an outdoor donation shed where the community can donate blankets and towels for the shelter animals. “We have volunteers that take care of our outdoor donation shed. They sort through and determine what we can use in the shelter. If we can’t use it, we (store it), and Opportunity House comes and picks it up once a month,” she explained. “We also have a relationship with CommunityAid. If we are not using (these items), we don’t want to throw things away.”
The ARL is also in need of fosters to house cats and dogs until their forever homes can be found.
“All supplies are offered. We provide food, the litter and the medication. We need someone to (offer) space outside the kennel,” Potteiger said, noting that people may be reluctant to foster because it may be difficult to give the animals to their new owners.
“It gets easier as you do it, and it’s (rewarding) to be part of that process.”
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County, located at 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro, is a nonprofit organization that cares for more than 5,000 animals each year, helping them to find permanent, loving homes or reuniting them with their owners. The ARL also offers human/animal support resources, lowcost veterinary services, animal control programs and animal cruelty and humane law investigation throughout Berks County.
