large yard sale to benefit mission work in Senegal will take place for the ninth time on Friday and Saturday, July 31 and Aug. 1, beginning at 8 a.m. at the home of Jill and Mike Edelman, 2449 Ridge Road (Route 23), Elverson. The Edelmans are missionaries
with the Global Training Network (GTN) and Mission Inter Senegal (MIS), the former of which trains pastors and other Christian leaders around the world. MIS helps missionaries connect with local towns and villages within the country. The yard sale returned last summer after a two-year absence. “It’s really not a yard sale,” Jill said. “It’s more like a flea market.
I call it a God sale.” Shoppers will find a variety of items at the upcoming sale, including antiques, lamps, artwork, furniture, jewelry, toys, baby and toddler items, fishing gear, sports equipment and household items. Anchored Ministries will hold its annual back-to-school program from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Hopewell Church, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson. The program provides free backpacks, school supplies and clothing to students in need within the Twin Valley and Daniel Boone school districts,

including private and homeschooled students. “On that day, we will distribute the backpacks and any school supplies they may need,” said Kur t Werner, Anchored Ministries’ director of development. Those who sign up for the program will be assigned a time slot to come in and select their items. Werner said that quality items will be set aside for each

Every year, millions of Americans travel great distances for mission trips internationally and domestically. Mission Trip Birdsboro & Beyond (MTBB) does things a little bit differently. Instead of hopping on a plane and travelling to another continent, MTBB helps local families with service projects that include painting, repairing decks, installing flooring, replacing siding and doing yard work. This year, 142 volunteers worked on 63 sites over the course of four days from July 15 to 18, primarily in Birdsboro and the surrounding areas of Reading, Pottstown and Douglassville. “The idea was having mission trips here at home,” said MTBB board member Stuart Wells. “There’s plenty of things and plenty of people that need help. ... Why spend the money and do all of that when there are people who need help right here in our backyard.” Early in the year, those in need submit assistance applications to MTBB. Then, during the fourday event, MTBB volunteers will donate their time to complete the service projects. Materials for the projects are wholly donated by community sponsors. The number of volunteers has increased steadily since the program’s inception in 2014, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19. Many of the volunteers come from local churches, which contribute to the program, but there is no designated religious affiliation with MTBB; anyone is welcome to volunteer or request help. “The point was to try and live out what Christ’s teachings were and what it says in the Gospel,” Wells said. “You’re supposed to
