large yard sale to benefit mission work in Senegal will take place for the ninth time on Friday and Saturday, July 31 and Aug. 1, beginning at 8 a.m. at the home of Jill and Mike Edelman, 2449 Ridge Road (Route 23), Elverson.

The Edelmans are missionaries

with the Global Training Network (GTN) and Mission Inter Senegal (MIS), the former of which trains pastors and other Christian leaders around the world. MIS helps missionaries connect with local towns and villages within the country.

The yard sale returned last summer after a two-year absence.

“It’s really not a yard sale,” Jill said. “It’s more like a flea market.

I call it a God sale.”

Shoppers will find a variety of items at the upcoming sale, including antiques, lamps, artwork, furniture, jewelry, toys, baby and toddler items, fishing gear, sports equipment and household items.

On July 4, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site held its annual Independence Day celebration, which featured patriotic music and the recitation of the Declaration of Independence. The event also featured the reading of winning essays as part of a contest that invited local students to address the question, “How do you see the Declaration of Independence influencing the future over your lifetime?”

Glowsticks and running.

It’s an unusual pairing, but one that will be in evidence at the “Glow Run” 5K run and walk at Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook, on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Honey Brook Food Pantry. This year’s event is the first of its kind since 2023; previous events benefited OneRunTogether, a now defunct nonprofit that financially and spiritually supported local cancer patients in need.

The race, which will start at 9 p.m., will have runners adorned in T-shirts with glow-in-thedark logos, as well as glowstick necklaces and bracelets.

“It’s a very cool visual effect when you see almost 200 people running together with glowsticks through the night,” said Steve Elliker of Elliker Financial, principal sponsor of the event. “This is a beautiful venue at the golf club; beautiful rolling hills. It’s quite a nice visual.”

There is a nominal cost to sign up, which can be done at https:// r u n s i g n u p . c o m / R a c e / PA / HoneyBrook/ReadySetGLOW atHBGC. The signup price will increase after Saturday, July 25.

That date is also the deadline to guarantee a T-shirt. Registration includes glowsticks and snacks on the night of the race.

On the day of the race, registration will be from 8 to 8:50 p.m.

After the race starts at 9 p.m., the awards ceremony will be at 10 p.m.

Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group (5 to 7, 8 to 10, 11 to 13, 14 to 16, 17 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and older). Children 12 and under must be accompanied by

Independence as more of an unfinished idea than a finished document.

“It says that all people are created equal, but it’s pretty clear that wasn’t true in 1776, and it still isn’t fully true now,” she wrote. “That gap between what it says and what actually exists is exactly why I think it will keep shaping the future during my lifetime.”

She referenced movements for abolition, women’s suffrage, civil rights and other issues as having drawn words and power from the Declaration of Independence, saying that the document will “act as a guide for what’s right.”

She also said that the document will serve as the blueprint for how rights expand in the future, which is why it will influence the future over her lifetime.

“Ultimately, the power of the Declaration lies in its tension,” she said. “That tension is not a weakness; it is what drives progress.”

In the middle school group, Elena Ledford of Governor Mifflin won the contest. Juliana Hamu of Boyertown and Brennan Beissel of Spring-Ford placed second and third, respectively.

In her essay, Ledford wrote about how America has symbolized freedom since it was discovered.

“The pilgrims came to America to obtain religious freedom,” she wrote. “When this freedom was threatened, Americans fought for it and formed the United States of America.”

She addressed how this freedom originated with the Declaration of Independence and how the

document continues to set America apart from other countries.

She called the Declaration of Independence the most important document regarding the government.

She quoted the preamble to the document, stating that it clearly highlights why governments should exist.

“The clear way that the Declaration of Independence declares that all governments should uphold the rights of the people provides the country with a clear path to follow in the future,” she wrote. “In the past, it justified the revolution, which established America as a free country.

Nowadays, it serves as a reminder of why governments should exist and how important freedom is, which will keep America’s government from becoming

inefficient or tyrannical.”

The yard sale pulls in hundreds of people across the two days, Jill said.

“People have fun,” she said. “They come back every year. We’ve had people knock on our door and ask if we’re having the yard sale. That always blows my mind.”

The sale will help fund a child sponsorship program, which is being offered through the partnership with MIS, which is a church planting NGO (nongovernmental organization).

T h e p ro g ra m a l l o w s members of the local community to directly help children in Senegal, a small, primarily Islamic nation in West Africa. Through the program, sponsors write letters to the children they sponsor, many of whom write back as they are able.

A table for the child sponsorship program will be at the sale.

Jill and Mike became missionaries as members of Calvary Fellowship Church in Lionville. Mike served as the pastor of prayer and groups at Calvary Fellowship in 2007 until joining GTN. Jill and Mike each take between three to five trips to Senegal each year, sometimes together.

While in the countr y, which has religious freedom, the couple sometimes stays in hotels but will often find accommodations within the typical conditions of the local people.

Chester County 4-H Fair Posted T h e C h e s te r C o u n t y 4-H Fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, and from Monday to Saturday, Aug. 3 to 8, at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook.

County youths will display the projects they have prepared throughout the year. Projects may include arts and crafts, sewing, plant science, engineering, robotics, photography, citizenship and leadership, foods and nutrition, and wildlife. The tabletop exhibits will open in the evening on Aug. 3 and remain on display through Aug. 8 at noon.

During numerous animal shows, youths will demonstrate their skill in the handling and care of farm animals, including breeding sheep and market lambs, swine, beef, market goats, dairy goats, dairy cattle, and horses. A livestock sale of beef, sheep, goats, and swine will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. The fair will wrap

up with the horse show on Aug. 8.

Following a successful career at Penn State, Rucci figured to have an outside chance of being selected in April’s NFL draft. While that did not happen, he did learn of Indianapolis’ interest in him during the staging of the draft.

“It was definitely somewhat disappointing,” said Rucci. “I knew it could be a day two or day three thing.

After the fourth round, I got a call from my agent, and he said, ‘The Colts want to sign you after the draft.’ It took a little bit off my shoulders. I was very excited to get the call.”

After transferring from Wisconsin following his sophomore season, Rucci was part of the Nittany Lions’ offensive line rotation as a tackle during his junior and senior campaigns. He earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors after his senior year.

In December, Rucci graduated from Penn State with a degree in geography. Overall, it was an experience - both on and off the field - which has prepared him well for the current challenge he is facing.

“Obviously, it was not a straightforward journey for me,” said Rucci. “Going to Penn State was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my career. It helped me be the player I am today. I probably wouldn’t be here without it.

“Growing up in Lititz, the NFL felt like a crazy, far-off thing,” added Rucci. “Then you’re playing in college and you realize what an awesome opportunity it is, so you try to take advantage of every single day. My dad (Todd) and brother (Hayden) have

Right now, Rucci is focused on one very difficult but attainable goal - becoming a professional football player.

“Focusing on that one thing is important,” said Rucci. “Getting better at football is another goal. As a rookie, it’s almost like being a freshman in college; you’re the low man on the totem pole. I’ve been enjoying the process of getting better.

Eventually, that leads to success on the field and ultimately making the team.

“You might show up one day and your locker is cleaned out,” continued Rucci.

“That’s the NFL. You’ve got to give 100% every day, whether that’s on the field or in the film room. I’m trying to get better at the things I need to get better at.”

Rucci, a 2021 graduate of Warwick High School and a 2025 graduate of Penn State, is an undrafted free agent who is attempting to make the Indianapolis Colts’ roster as an offensive lineman (OL). Since May, Rucci has been put through all the paces at the Colts’ off-season workouts, including rookie camp, organized team activities and mini camp, as well as the upcoming preseason training camp from the end of July to early September.

Indianapolis will open its 2026 season on Sunday, Sept. 13, at home against the Baltimore Ravens.

“I’m very thankful to end up here in Indy,” said Rucci.

“It’s a great atmosphere and a great place to learn to compete at the next level.

The vets and coaches have been great resources. At the end of the day, you’re playing football, but the stakes are higher. It’s the same game I’ve been playing since high school, but it’s the big show.”

Currently, the Colts have 15 offensive linemen in camp, and they plan to keep anywhere from 10 to 12 OLs to populate their 53-man opening day roster and their practice squad. Rucci’s odds of making the team may simply be a matter of perception.

“That’s definitely a way to look at it,” said Rucci.

T he Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is available to provide assistance to veterans who have lost their DD Form 214 (DD-214), DD Form 215 (DD-215) or other military documents. DMVA may be able to help veterans locate these documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits they have earned.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document iss ue d up on a s er v ice m e m b e r ’s re t i re m e n t , separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits ear ned through his or her military service. The DD-215 is used to correct

errors or make additions to a DD-214.
