Glowsticks and running.
It’s an unusual pairing, but one that will be in evidence at the “Glow Run” 5K run and walk at Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook, on Saturday, Aug. 15. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Honey Brook Food Pantry. This year’s event is the first of its kind since 2023; previous events benefited OneRunTogether, a now defunct nonprofit that financially and spiritually supported local cancer patients in need.
The race, which will start at 9 p.m., will have runners adorned in T-shirts with glow-in-the-dark logos, as well as glowstick necklaces and bracelets.
“It’s a very cool visual effect when you see almost 200 people
running together with glowsticks through the night,” said Steve Elliker of Elliker Financial, principal sponsor of the event. “This is a beautiful venue at the golf club; beautiful rolling hills. It’s quite a nice visual.”

Concert Series Continues With Westtown Road Band

Honey Brook Borough’s 2026 Concerts in the Park series will continue on Sunday, July 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a performance from Westtown Road Band, a West Chester-based five-part outfit that is “known for their dynamic live shows,” according to the borough.
The series began with a performance by Poor Man’s Gambit on June 14. All shows take place in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry.
“We play a lot of older music,” said John Crispino, the band’s vocalist and acoustic guitarist. “A lot of Rolling Stones, (Lynyrd) Skynyrd, all these guys from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. That’s our whole deal.”
The Westtown Road Band is a unique blend of modern country, blues and rock ’n’ roll. One of the group’s Facebook reviews states that “these dudes bring the honk AND the tonk!”

On July 4, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site held its annual Independence Day celebration, which featured patriotic music and the recitation of the Declaration of Independence. The event also featured the reading of winning essays as part of a contest that invited local students to address the question, “How do you see the Declaration of Independence influencing the future over your lifetime?”

Everyone in the band’s lineup is under the age of 23, something that is quite unique in the local summer concert scene. John Crispino said that the outfit recently started putting out some original music and that they’ll play three or four originals at an average show, along with plenty of classic covers.

Another unique thing about Westtown Road Band is that most of its members started playing their instruments within the last two years. The band itself is new, having played its first gig on Sept. 28, 2025.
“Last year, me and lead guitar player Sean Mallon, he was one of my best friends,” John said. “We would just play in my room, and one day my brother walks in and he’s like, ‘Yo, I want to learn something. Should I learn how to play something like drums?’”
It was a similar experience for Burr. “I knew he could learn bass, because he was real good at video games,” the vocalist said.

Following the July 19 concert, two more concerts will be featured as part of the series. Ironwood Drive Band will come to Honey Brook from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, performing traditional bluegrass music. The series will conclude with The Tommy Froelich Band on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., playing classic rock and blues tunes from the ’60s and ’70s.

The library will host a movie matinee every Friday this summer from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The movie will be appropriate for people of all ages. Attendees may bring a snack, pillow, and blanket. On July 17, the movie will be “Night at the Museum,” and the library will provide popcorn.

4-H Posts Day Camps
Chester County 4-H, a program of the Penn State Extension, will hold two day camps. Both camps will take place at the Penn State Extension Chester County 4-H Office, located in the Government Services Center, 601 Westtown Road, Suite 370, West Chester.
A STEM day camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 28 and 29. The camp is designed for youths ages 11 to 16.
Participants will learn about vibe coding, an approach to software development that uses natural language prompts to create applications. No traditional coding experience is required. Youths will create crafting prompts to guide AI tools, make a simple website, and learn to design a userfriendly interface.

In addition, Chester County 4-H will offer a candy making day camp on Friday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The program is open to youths ages 8 to 18.
Participants will learn candy making and sweet confection techniques and leave with samples of their work. Participants should bring a bag lunch, and they are encouraged to bring an apron. All other supplies will be provided. Families should notify the Chester County 4-H Office prior to the class if their child has food allergies.

DeWese Named Chief Public Defender
Chester County has appointed Susanna DeWese as its new chief public defender. DeWese, who currently serves as first
assistant public defender, will assume her new position on Aug. 5, when current Chief Public Defender Nathan Schenker retires.
DeWese has worked in the Public Defender’s Office for 23 years, the last six as first assistant public defender. Her duties in her
most recent role included helping to oversee daily operations, staff supervision, budgeting, grant administration, training, and strategic planning. She is a graduate of Rosemont College and received her law degree from Villanova University School of Law. DeWese is a resident of the Borough of West Chester.

Koby Howat has been named to the president’s list for the spring semester at Plymouth State University, Plymouth, N.H. Howat is a resident of Honey Brook.
To be named to the president’s list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.70 or greater for the semester and must have completed at least 12 credit hours during the semester, at least nine of which must confer grade points, at the time the list is finalized. Howat is majoring in exercise and sport physiology.

“It says that all people are created equal, but it’s pretty clear that wasn’t true in 1776, and it still isn’t fully true now,” she wrote. “That gap between what it says and what actually exists is exactly why I think it will keep shaping the future during my lifetime.”
She referenced movements for abolition, women’s suffrage, civil rights and other issues as having drawn words and power from the Declaration of Independence, saying that the document will “act as a guide for what’s right.”
She also said that the document will serve as the blueprint for how rights expand in the future, which is why it will influence the future over her lifetime.
“Ultimately, the power of the Declaration lies in its tension,” she said. “That tension is not a weakness; it is what drives progress.”
In the middle school group, Elena Ledford of Governor Mifflin won the contest. Juli-
ana Hamu of Boyertown and Brennan Beissel of SpringFord placed second and third, respectively.
In her essay, Ledford wrote about how America has symbolized freedom since it was discovered.
“The pilgrims came to America to obtain religious freedom,” she wrote. “When this freedom was threatened, Americans fought for it and formed the United States of America.”
She addressed how this freedom originated with the Declaration of Independence and how the document continues to set America apart from other countries.
She called the Declaration of Independence the most important document regarding the government.
She quoted the preamble to the document, stating that it clearly highlights why governments should exist.
“The clear way that the Declaration of Independence declares that all governments should uphold the rights of the people provides the country with a clear path to follow in the future,” she

Sheriff’s Office Welcomes New Deputies
The Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) recently welcomed five new deputies - Troy Brock, Edward Kokalari, Todd Pechin, Dylan Smith, and Claudia Vara-Alvirde. All five graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Municipal Police Academy on June 11. The graduation ceremony was held at Ridley High School in Folsom and recognized a total of 57 new police officers.
One of the new deputies, Pechin, is a former United States Army military police officer and brings experience shaped by law enforcement operations both overseas and in the U.S. He said he joined the CCSO to gain a full understanding of the civil side of law enforcement and to become well-versed and fully prepared to serve the public.
For Brock, commitment to public service has been the foundation of his career. His expertise includes decades of experience as a security guard for institutions such as universities, hospitals, and government organizations. His motivation for becoming a deputy is rooted in his desire to continue pursuing new goals.
Collectively, the new deputies expressed gratitude for their training and said they are eager to apply it in service to the Chester County community. Those who sponsored the five new CCSO deputies at the ceremony included Capt. Kevin Creighton, Lt. John McCray, and Lt. Adam Sibley.

Grant Funding Available
A new grant funded by the Pennsylvania Beef Producers Working Group (PA BPWG) and administered through the Center for Beef Excellence (CBE) can help producers defray the cost of testing their cattle herd for theileria.
To help address the growing risk to Pennsylvania cattle from the Asian longhorned tick and the theile-
ria disease that can infect cattle, the grant allows reimbursement funding for beef producers in Pennsylvania who choose to test their herds for Theileria orientalis and anaplasma. Theileria, spread through the Asian longhorned tick, can cause severe anemia in cattle, which leads to weakness, jaundice, and pale gums. Anaplasma
symptoms are similar to theileria, so officials suggest a combined test.
Reimbursement grants of up to $250 will be awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis until funds are depleted. The Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) provides more details about the test at https://padls .agriculture.pa.gov/PADLS Search.aspx. Producers are urged to work with their veterinarian to ensure samples are collected correctly and proper tubes are used.
A minimum of 10% of the herd must be tested to qualify. Results from all animals tested must
