Summer Road Trip Showcases Berks County BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson and Morlatton Village near Douglassville are three of the sites featured in the “Road to Roots” program being offered this summer by the Mifflin Community Library (MCL) and the Berks History Center. As part of the first-time event, residents are invited to explore 13 locations throughout Berks County

through Tuesday, Aug. 31. Those who visit at least 10 of the locations will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Tourgoers are asked to share photos from their visits to the various sites on social media with the hashtag #berksroadtoroots. Those who would like to take part in “Road to Roots” are asked to pick up a map to the 13 locations at MCL, 6 Philadelphia Ave., Shillington, or at the Berks History Center, 940 Centre Ave., Reading. hen visitors arrived at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site on July 4, they were invited to sign a mock Declaration of Independence with an authentic quill pen, marking the beginning of activities being held to celebrate Independence Day and the 245th anniversary of the signing of the historic document. A ceremony featuring patriotic music and readings has been held at the site for the past 10 years, although it took place virtually in 2020. Jeff Jones, site manager, welcomed those in attendance to

Gleaning Garden Dedicated To Sen. Dinniman

celebrate not only the holiday, but also the return of the in-person event. The program, which was held on the front porch of the Ironmaster’s Mansion, was presented by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace. Presenters included past park superintendent Edie Shean-Hammond, who is now a member of the Friends; Friends member Christine Emmert, author of “From Out the Fiery Furnace,” a one-act play featuring the stories of life in the 19th century at Hopewell; singer Isabelle Stetka; and Stetka’s grandmother, Francine Black, who provided keyboard accompaniment. Black is also artistic director of the Berks Opera Workshop.

The gleaning garden at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore, which provides fresh produce for clients of the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), was recently dedicated to retired state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who founded the Chester County Gleaning Program in 1996. Gleaning is based on the biblical concept that the farmer should give some of the crops in his fields to those in need.
