Independence. Jeff Jones, site manager for Hopewell Furnace, provided the welcome, which was followed by “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by Molly Herman and the presenting of colors by Girl Scouts from Daniel Boone Service Unit 763 and Boy Scouts from Pack and Troop 595. Danica Leister, a student at Daniel Boone High School, was named the third-place winner of the essay contest. In her narrative, Danica spoke about how the Declaration of Independence was related to the women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls in July of 1848. “During the women’s rights convention, Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke her draft of the Declaration of Sentiments. This Declaration follows the text and composition of the Declaration of Independence but includes changes to the document to demonstrate the women’s effort toward equality and dedication to be taken seriously,” the essay stated.
Everyone knows that libraries are the go-to place to borrow books, but what about a loaner ice cream maker or a “happy birthday” yard sign? These and other items are now available as part of the Berks County Public Libraries’ new Library of Things program. Participating libraries, including Boone Area Library in Birdsboro and the Village Library of Morgantown, will maintain an inventory of items that people may borrow at their respective locations.

More Than Books Available To Borrow At Berks Libraries BY FRANCINE FULTON
SEW Creative, which Walton started in September of 2007, is a group of residents who get together weekly to sew items such as walker bags, respirator bags and blankets for Tel Hai Meadows Health Care Center residents. The group also makes table skirts for the Tel Hai chime choir, placemats for Meals on Wheels clients, pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, baby bundles for newborns and quilts for local veterans and victims of domestic violence. Items made by the group also include sundresses, snappy bags (purses) and school supply bags for girls continuing their education in foreign places such as Belize, Africa and Haiti. Walton has also led the Nature Club at Tel Hai, which maintains the resident flower and vegetable gardens. Established in 2016, the Tel Hai Gardens were awarded the Garden of Distinction honor from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for five years from 2016 to 2020. Last year, Tel Hai was awarded the 2021 Blue Ribbon of Distinction. The garden at Tel Hai is also an official Monarch Butterfly Waystation. See Volunteer Of The Year pg 3
