But now Honey Brook is in the top of our list of places we want to return for repeat concerts,”
Velma Sack, a 103-year-old U.S. Navy veteran and a resident of Tel Hai Retirement Community, was honored for her service during a program held on June 26. The event included a pinning ceremony, the presentation of a Challenge Coin and Navy Service Certificate and the awarding of a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Velma served from 1942 through 1944 as part of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), which was a branch of the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II. Established in 1942, its purpose was to free up male sailors for sea duty by employing women in shore-based roles. The women performed a wide range of duties, including clerical work and aviation support. Velma served in security communications as a Morse code message transcriber.
Velma was born on June 10, 1922, and recently celebrated her 103rd birthday at Tel Hai. According to a biography prepared by Tel Hai wellness supervisor Diane Kabelo, Velma grew up in Jonesboro, Ga., a small town located near Atlanta. She joined the WAVES after graduating high school. Her job in communications included typing Morse code messages that came in from ships. She also sent messages that officers wrote.
Velma stated that it was not hard being a woman in the Navy, that she was treated well and respected and that her group was well managed.
As part of a series of nature classes being offered this summer at Historic Poole Forge (HPF), 1940 Main St., Narvon, “PA Raptors and Mammals” will be presented on Wednesday, July 9, from 1 to 2 p.m.
Tracie Mudrinich Young from Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro will be the instructor. The program will feature an introduction to several
of Pennsylvania’s birds of prey, mammals and reptiles. Attendees will learn how these animals live and why they are beneficial to the environment.
The program will be held in the pavilion at HPF. The program is free, but donations will be accepted. For more information or to reserve a spot, call 484-797-5302 or email hpf1940@gmail.com.

Chester County United Way will host the Social Impact category of the “Road to LionCage 2025” Pitch
Competition series on Wednesday, July 23, from 2 to 6 p.m. at its Exton headquarters, 150 John Robert Thomas Drive. Local nonprofits, community changemakers, and mission-driven organizations may present ideas that reimagine how they serve their communities.
Presented by i2n, an initiative of the Chester County Economic Development Council; Penn State Great Valley LaunchBox; and Penn State Brandywine LaunchBox, the Social Impact pitch competition offers an opportunity for nonprofits to showcase pilot projects, experimental programs, or creative ways to expand their mission.
Selected participants will give a 10-minute presentation outlining their work, why it matters, and what they hope to do next. A panel of local community leaders will evaluate each pitch based on clarity, potential, and impact. The top presenter will receive a $500 prize, with $250 awarded for second place. The winner will also secure an automatic spot in the main LionCage event in November, where finalists will compete for $5,000 to $10,000 in funding.
People are also encouraged to attend the event as audience members.
For more information, to apply to pitch, or to register as an attendee, visit https://lioncage.great valleylaunchbox.com. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, July 9. For more information, contact Kelly Cockshaw at 610-429-9400.
Following a successful mini-sale in September 2024, Berks Book Bonanza will once again open its doors to the public for its regular five-day, gently-used book sale scheduled to run from Wednesday, July 9, through Sunday, July 13. This will be the annual fundraiser’s second sale at the County of Berks South Campus location, 400 E. Wyomissing Ave. in Mohnton, but its first five-day operation since 2021.
Sale organizers are optimistic about returning to the regular schedule and look forward to expanding upon last year’s success.
Judy Ellsworth, vice president of Berks Book Bonanza, reported that $40,000 in proceeds were generated from last year’s event that went directly to two local organizations: the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and Reading Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
A long-standing fundraiser in Berks County, Berks Book Bonanza is one of the largest book sale operations in the local area, offering gently used books, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, puzzles and other items at low prices for general items.
Specialty materials and collectible books are priced as marked.
The 2025 Berks Book Bonanza sale will occur on the following day and times: July 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A bag sale, where shoppers can fill a bag of books for a suggested donation, will take place on July 13 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, with the exception of the early bird sale on July 9.
A holding area will be available on July 9 only. No carts will be permitted inside the building, but volunteers will be on hand to assist in transporting large orders.
Shoppers should be aware that the sale is cash or check only with no on-site ATMs available. Identification will be required for all check purchases.
The sale entrance will be located behind the building by the covered ramp. Volunteers will restock items throughout the sale.
To find more information about the 2025 sale, visit www .berksbookbonanza.org or follow the Facebook event hosted by the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries.
hand at the event include Fresh Frenchy’s, Pip & Lily’s Loaded Tots and Munchiezpa! Guests can enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails from local vendors, including Ashlynn Distillery, Aulenbach Wines, Casa W Distillery, Cigar City Brewing, City Distilling, J & P Winery, Kitt’s Cafe & Gandalf’s Garden, Ridgewood Winery, Rusty Rail Brewing Company, Twitchy Coffee Company and Tröegs Independent Brewing.
Vendors will be on hand selling pet-related items, including dog treats and pet accessories, and there will also be games, giveaways and an opportunity to win prizes.
There are several ticket options available, including a designated driver ticket, which includes non-alcoholic beverages. “This is good for people under age 21 so they can participate,” Pignetti noted.
Also offered is a general admission ticket, which includes access to more than 75 samples of beer, wine, mixed drinks and mocktails and a commemorative Pints for Pups glass. A VIP (Very Important Pinter) ticket includes the same samples, plus access to the VIP area with free, full pours; one food truck meal voucher; and a commemorative Pints for Pups glass and poster.
Pignetti noted that the last Mega Pints for Pups event was held in 2017. “We switched to a mini Pints (for Pets) model and partnered with different breweries and wineries that hosted fundraisers on our behalf,” she
explained. “In 2017, we had 400 people (in attendance for Mega Pints for Pups). It was a massive event, but it was at Dietrich Park in Reading. For this event, we are hoping to have around 200 to 250 people.”
Pets will be welcome. “We prefer that people bring dogs that will enjoy this type of environment - well-behaved, leashed dogs,” Pignetti added.
All proceeds will support Humane Pennsylvania’s adoption centers, veterinary services and community programs. According to www.humanePA .org, the organization has a mission “to empower people to increase their capacity to care for animals so that all animals are healthy, safe and treated humanely.”
To purchase tickets in advance, visit https://humanepa.org/ events/upcoming-events and choose “Mega Pints for Pups.” It is recommended that VIP tickets be purchased in advance. A limited number of general admission tickets will be available at the door.
Those with questions may contact Pignetti at LPignetti@ HumanePA.org or 610-750-6100, ext. 211.
For pet owners looking for a place where their dogs can run in a safe environment, the Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park is open seven days a week during daylight hours and is free to the public. One side of the dog park has an enclosed area for small or shy dogs, while the other part is for large or active dogs.
Velma met her husband, Frank, in New York during the war when he was stationed in the same area. They were married on Feb. 14, 1945, and had 10 children, eight girls and two boys. Frank passed away in 1971.
Velma currently has 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, one just born a few weeks ago.
Following her Naval career, Velma worked in a plane manufacturing facility in Georgia performing inspections. Later in life, Velma moved into the Tel Hai Meadows Health Care Center.
The pinning ceremony, which honors the military service made by a veteran, was performed by Tel Hai resident Richard Toscano, a retired veteran who was a second-class petty officer in the U.S. Navy, Seabee Construction Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1966. Currently, he does presentations at Saint Peter Catholic Church in West Brandywine on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He is also involved with the veterans program at Tel Hai
and is a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Richard has been married to his wife, Bunny, for 58 years. They have four children and 10 grandchildren.
Also participating in the program to honor Velma was the Tel Hai Honor Guard, which presented the colors; Tel Hai chaplain David Klingensmith, who provided the invocation and welcome; and Ruthanne Morris, volunteer coordinator for Compassus, who provided Velma’s biography and presented her with the Navy Service Certificate and Challenge Coin. The presentation of the citation was made by Nikki Whitlock, chief of staff for Sen. Katie Muth. Carrie Root closed the program and played “Anchors Aweigh,” the Navy anthem.

A large yard sale to benefit mission work in Senegal will take place for the eighth time on Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, beginning at 8 a.m. at the home of Jill and Mike Edelman, 2449 Ridge Road (Route 23), Elverson.
Mike and Jill are missionaries with Global Training Network (GTN), an organization that trains pastors and other Christian leaders around the world.
The yard sale is returning this summer after a two-year absence. “I’ve had people stop and knock on my door and see if we are doing our yard sale,” Jill shared.
The yard sale will help fund a child sponsorship program, which is
being offered through a partnership with Mission Inter Senegal, which is a church planting NGO (non-governmental organization). “The sponsorship program will provide for the education, evangelism outreach, health care and nutrition for 200 children in the villages of Baback and Ngalagne, Senegal,” Jill said.
Shoppers will find a variety of items at the upcoming sale, including antiques, lamps, artwork, furniture, jewelry, toys, baby and toddler items, fishing gear, sports equipment and housewares. “We price everything to sell. We have gotten incredible feedback about our prices,” said Jill. “One hundred percent of the items have been donated, and 100% go to the mission work that we are doing, which
(benefits a) school and projects for pastors and other people in villages that need help surviving.”
Jill and Mike became missionaries as members of Calvary Fellowship Church in Lionville. Mike served as the pastor of prayer and groups at Calvary Fellowship in 2007 until joining GTN. “In 2020, we went full time as missionaries at GTN,” Jill explained. “We go and train pastors and church leaders that don’t have access to affordable biblical training. Mike goes to Senegal five times a year; I go three to five times a year.”
There will also be an opportunity at the yard sale to make a donation for the mission work. “There are a lot of people that see the value in education and in health care,” Jill stated. “With
Boscov’s has officially opened registration for its 2025 Friends Helping Friends event. During this one-day event, set for Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Boscov’s will offer its biggest sale of the year - 25% off its lowest sale prices. Some exclusions apply.
To access the discount, shoppers will be asked to donate $5 to a registered participating nonprofit organization. In return, shoppers will receive a Friends Helping Friends shopping pass to be used on the day of the event. For online use, each shopping pass will
include a unique, one-time-use discount code.
One hundred percent of the shopping pass donation will stay with the nonprofit.
Participants may also register to win a $100 Boscov’s gift card. There will be one winner per store.
Jim Boscov, chairman and CEO, reported that last year’s event raised $3.4 million in donations, helping 3,400 nonprofit organizations.
To learn more and to register, visit www.boscovs.com/ friendshelpingfriends.
Isaac Kremer of Birdsboro and Stephanie Smale of Morgantown were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2025 semester at Alvernia University.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the semester and complete at least 12 credits.
GTN, one of things I am doing now is training women on reproductive health and feminine hygiene, and I take hygiene kits whenever I go. We also do food distributions. It’s a broad ministry, not just meeting the spiritual needs but physical needs as well.”
Donations will be accepted at the Edelman home for the yard sale from Friday, July 11, through Wednesday, July 16. Those who have items to donate should contact Jill at mjclek@ aol.com prior to dropoff. All donations must be clean and in good working condition.
Items that will not be accepted include shoes, with the exception of sports footgear; computers; books, with the exception of children’s books; clothing; large pieces of furniture, such as sectionals or armoires; old televisions; and VHS tapes.
Volunteers are needed to help set up the sale and on the day of the event, as well as for cleanup chores. Interested individuals may contact Jill at the aforementioned email for more details.
Unsold yard sale items will be donated to local nonprofit organizations, including the Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe, Steeple to People in Honey Brook and Liberty Thrift in Pottstown.
The couple plans to continue its missionary work with regularly scheduled visits. “(Senegal has) the dry season and the rainy season. We don’t travel during the summer
because this is the rainy season when they are planting their crops, so (the pastors) can’t come to us,” she said. “Once you get off the main road, the roads are sand. We are going out into the bush. A lot of pastors travel by motorcycle or a four-wheeler, and it can be difficult traveling.”
During their visits to Senegal, Mike and Jill may stay in a tent or with in an available house, but with no running water or indoor bathrooms. “We are in hotel sometimes,” she noted, explaining that the conditions are rustic.
Despite the conditions, both Mike and Jill enjoy their mission work and the people they meet. “The people are wonderful. They are so appreciative. They would literally give you the clothes off your back if you needed them,” Jill said. “It is very gratifying. It makes you feel like you are doing something worthwhile.”
Jill added that some shoppers at the yard sale question why the couple does mission work in a foreign country, rather than the United States. “People say, ‘Why not work here?’ Everyone is called to someplace different. If you are interested in missions, anywhere you are is your mission field,” Jill noted. “If someone is called to do something here, that is great. It’s all about what you are called to do. If the Lord is laying something on your heart, do it.”

said band member Dan Diviney.
This will be the band’s first concert with its new fiddle player, Lavinia Reid, a resident of Chambersburg in Franklin County. ”She fits in very well with our style of playing,” Diviney noted.
Other band members include Molly Shortridge from York County, who plays the silver flute, Irish flute and alto flute, as well as a variety of low and high Irish whistles. She also sings lead and backup vocals. “Molly and Lavinia perform the most amazing version of ‘The Crested Hen’ I’ve ever heard,” said Diviney.
Diviney will play Irish whistles and an Irish drum called the bodhrán and do some singing. Rounding out the band is frontman Mike Morrison on guitar, mandolin, Native American flute and both lead and backing vocals.
The band performs music from Ireland and Scotland. Its music ranges from slow love songs and ballads to fast jigs and reels. Across the Pond has been described as “a Celtic band on high octane.”
“The Irish music we play is very popular in and of itself, and how we arrange it makes it even more interesting,” said Diviney. “And you don’t have to be Irish to like the music.”
He noted that audience members often become involved in the concert by singing or dancing along. “Oftentimes when we play, there are several people who get up and dance, and if not dancing, they are tapping their toes and clapping along,” he said. “The last time we played in Honey Brook, a couple got up and did dances, and it was interesting for us to see. They were dancing to some waltzes; it reminded me of ballroom dancing.”
Coincidentally, during another concert in Honey Brook, the show again was enhanced by an audience member. “One year, we brought a
from pg 1
step dancer along, and she ran into a champion step dancer in the audience,” said Diviney. “They danced together to our music in the covered picnic area. They did a couple of dances, which was really fun.”
Diviney added that some audience members in Honey Brook who were from Ireland particularly enjoyed the music. “When we played there, some people came up to us who are from Ireland to talk to us and encourage us to apply for (different Irish) festivals,” he said, noting that the band members have many years of performing experience. “We have done 780-some shows over 15 years.”
“Mike and I were two of the three founders of the original trio that we had,” he added. “Then the fiddler left, and we replaced him, and the second fiddler left, and we just picked up Lavinia. We are really happy with the people we have and how things are going.”
The band will have two CDs available at the concert, including “Little Beggarman,” recorded in 2019. For more information about the band, visit www.acrossthepond music.com.
Following the concert on July 13, two additional concerts will be featured as part of the series. Wood Flower, a bluegrass band, will perform on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and the concert series will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a performance by Local Honey.
For more information, visit www .honeybrookborough.net, choose “Events” and then select “Concerts in the Park.” Those with questions may email jjenzano@hbboro.net.
In the event of inclement weather, a decision to cancel the concert will be made by 1 p.m. on the day of the show. A cancellation message will be posted on the website.
