Basketball Player Courting Success At Berks Catholic BY FRANCINE FULTON

Cars and trucks of a variety of makes, models and years will be on display at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church’s car show on July 10.

Car Show To Offer Family Fun “It’s all about fun, food, family and faith,” said Carol Kincaid, committee chair for the 11th annual car show being presented on Saturday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located in the village of Gibraltar. Organizers have planned a variety of events to go along with the car show, including children’s activities, vendors and an opportunity to win prizes. The car show portion will feature a display of all makes, models and years of cars and trucks. Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee upon arrival, and spectators will be admitted free of charge. Between 150 and 200 vehicles are expected to be on display at the event. Gift bags and dash plaques will be given to the first 100 vehicles. Trophies will be given out in nine categories, including Best of Show; Fan Favorite, which is voted on by the spectators; Best Import; and Best Car from the 1940s to the 1950s, the 1950s to the 1960s, and so on. Kincaid noted that face painting

will not be offered, but there will be a person on hand creating balloon animals. “Our pastor’s wife will have some fun things for the kids,” she added. A Chinese auction will be offered. Participants will be asked to purchase tickets and place them in a container in front of the item or items that they are interested in winning. Prizes available to win will include gift cards, cash prizes and scratch-off lottery tickets. “We have a basket from a hair salon with hair products and a snack basket from Tom Sturgis, which has different flavors of pretzels,” Kincaid noted. Food offered for sale will include homemade baked goods and breakfast items. A DJ will provide music, the Keystone Blood Mobile will be on-site holding a donation drive and vendors will be on hand for shopping. “At the St. John’s table, visitors will be able to enter a free drawing for a Reading Coffee Roasters basket,” said Kincaid. Another attraction will be a Belgian sheepdog show featuring dogs performing tricks and agility

demonstrations. Children will be able to visit with the dogs and play catch with them. Proceeds from the car show will benefit the church and Veterans Making a Difference, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans in need in Berks County. “They are actually in back of the Hope Rescue Mission building in Reading,” said Kincaid. “They provide clothing and food, and they have activities for veterans to get together. It’s all about reaching out to the veterans.” The car show at St. John’s has always benefited church projects and a local charity. Past beneficiaries of the event include Helping Harvest, Berks Women in Crisis and the police and fire departments of Robeson Township. St. John’s is located at 1035 Old River Road, Birdsboro. For more information, email stjohnsgibraltar@windstream.net or call the church office at 610582-3655. More information is also available at www.stjohnsgibraltar.org or by searching for “St John’s Lutheran Church” on Facebook. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available during the show.

In March of 2018, the Community Courier featured an article on Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA) fifth-grader Caraline Herb of Birdsboro, who at the age of 11 won the Pennsylvania State Championship Free Throw Contest presented by the Knights of Columbus. To achieve this feat, she faced off against the girl winner from every district throughout the state. Today, at the age of 16, Caraline, who will be a junior this fall at Berks Catholic High School (BCHS) in Reading, is continuing her success on the basketball court. This past year she set the school record by scoring 12 3-pointers in one game, beating the previous record of 7. “I had 12 3-pointers in my game against Reading High, where I went 12 for 15 from the 3-point line,” Caraline said. “I had 38 points in this game, which was my career high

and a Berks Catholic single-game point record. This past season, I led the county with 60 3-pointers. My high school team won the county championship this year.” She was also selected as a member of the AllBerks girls’ basketball team and won Most Valuable Player (MPV) for BCHS this season.
