Alarge yard sale to benefit mission work in Senegal will take place for the eighth time on Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, beginning at 8 a.m. at the home of Jill and Mike Edelman, 2449 Ridge Road (Route 23), Elverson.
Mike and Jill are missionaries with Global Training Network (GTN), an organization that trains pastors and other Christian leaders around the world.
The yard sale is returning this summer after a two-year absence.
“I’ve had people stop and knock on my door and see if we are doing our yard sale,” Jill shared.
The yard sale will help fund a child sponsorship program, which is being offered through a partnership with Mission Inter Senegal, which is a church planting NGO (non-governmental organization). “The sponsorship program will provide for the education, evangelism outreach, health care and nutrition for 200 children in the villages of Baback and Ngalagne, Senegal,” Jill said.
Shoppers will find a variety of
items at the upcoming sale, including antiques, lamps, artwork, furniture, jewelry, toys, baby and toddler items, fishing gear, sports equipment and housewares. “We price everything to sell. We have gotten incredible feedback about our prices,” said Jill. “One hundred percent of the items have been donated, and 100% go to the mission work that we are doing, which (benefits a) school and projects for
pastors and other people in villages that need help surviving.”
Jill and Mike became missionaries as members of Calvary Fellowship Church in Lionville. Mike served as the pastor of prayer and groups at Calvary Fellowship in 2007 until joining GTN. “In 2020, we went full time as missionaries at GTN,” Jill explained. “We go and train pastors and church leaders that don’t have access to affordable

Those interested in volunteering for the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), a nonprofit organization that provides food to people in need, are invited to donate their time to the organization on Pennsylvania Day, Friday, July 18, in partnership with America250 PA Chester County. A number of volunteer opportunities are available at the CCFB warehouse, 650 Pennsylvania Drive, Exton. For those who would rather volunteer out of doors, they may help harvest fresh vegetables
at either Springton Manor Farm, 860 Spring Road, Glenmoore, or Two Gander Farm, 110 Buck Road, Downingtown.
According to Nick Imbesi, CCFB director of community relations, volunteers will help in the CCFB warehouse packing Senior Food Boxes or Summer Student Boxes. Currently, shifts are available from 1 to 4 p.m.
Senior Food Boxes are given out monthly and are designed to meet the nutritional needs of aging adults, while Summer Student Boxes provide food for

This summer, Berks County readers are invited to help a shelter pet find a forever home just by reading. As part of the third annual Pages for Pets program, community members are being invited to read a total of 500,000 minutes from now through Friday, July 25. If the challenge is met, Reading District Libraries will fully sponsor the adoption of one animal at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) that is seeking a forever home. Participants may read whatever they choose, including novels, e-books, audiobooks, newspapers or comics and graphic novels, and then log their reading minutes. Every minute contributes to reaching the 500,000-minute goal that will fund the adoption fee of a shelter pet.
“The Reading District Libraries are using funding from our budget to sponsor the program,” explained Marissa Guidara, youth services district consultant for Reading District Libraries. She noted that the program’s progress can be found at each participating library, which includes the Village Library of Morgantown and the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, and at www.berkslibraries.org.
“At each library location, they have a poster where they are filling in the minutes each week to show how far we’ve gotten. It will also be on the Berks County Libraries’ website,” Guidara noted. “There is an online form on the website where people can submit how much they read, and that will be updated every Monday around midday.”

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools,
youths for when school is not in session. “A lot of students are receiving free and reduced-cost meals at school. That is their most nutritious meal of the day, and we supplement that by providing boxes,” Imbesi explained.
Other volunteer opportunities in the warehouse on July 18 include preparing and packaging prepared meals. Currently, shifts are available
from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. “The processing kitchen is where we (prepare meals) before distribution,” Imbesi said, adding that volunteers are also needed to sort, clean and pack fresh produce for distribution in the processing kitchen.
“We have opportunities at both farms from 9 a.m. to noon,” Imbesi added. Food grown at the two farms is available to residents through the
Fresh2You Mobile Market and at food pantries and cupboards throughout the county.
National Pennsylvania Day is an annual observance to honor Pennsylvania as the second state to join the Union after adopting the U.S. Constitution. America250 PA and America250 PA Chester County both mark this annual observance leading up to America’s Semiquincentennial in 2026 by encouraging volunteer efforts at local food banks and other initiatives.
According to https://www .america250chesco.org, the commission aims to “inspire and engage all our communities in commemoration of America’s founding, connecting our county’s stories to the nation’s past, present, and future throughout 2026.”
A list of volunteer opportunities and shifts available for Pennsylvania Day at the CCFB can be found at https://vhub.at/america250pa.

All minors under age 18 must have a signed waiver on file. Closed-toed shoes are required while volunteering at both the warehouse and the farms. Those working outdoors should dress for the weather and wear sunblock. If working in the CCFB kitchen, volunteers must wear a hat or bandana. For those without a head covering, hairnets will be provided.
According to www.chestercounty foodbank.org, CCFB secures, manages and distributes food to people in need through more than 100 community partners in the county through its network of food cupboards, hot meal sites, shelters and other social service organizations. Local CCFB partners include the Octorara Area Food Cupboard in Parkesburg; the Honey Brook Food Pantry; Shepherd’s Kitchen, a monthly meal ministry at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church; and Blessing House, a food bank in Honey Brook.

There will also be an opportunity at the yard sale to make a donation for the mission work. “There are a lot of people that see the value in education and in health care,” Jill stated. “With GTN, one of things I am doing now is training women on reproductive health and feminine hygiene, and I take hygiene kits whenever I go. We also do food distributions. It’s a broad ministry, not just meeting the spiritual needs but physical needs as well.”
Donations will be accepted at the Edelman home for the yard sale from Friday, July 11, through Wednesday, July 16. Those who have items to donate should contact Jill at mjclek@ aol.com prior to dropoff. All donations must be clean and in good working condition.

Guidara said that ARL will choose the lucky pet whose adoption fee will be sponsored. For the first year of the program, Agent 007, a senior black cat, had his adoption fee sponsored and was adopted soon after. Last summer, Berks County readers successfully met the goal, and the ARL announced that Egypt, a 1-year-old pit bull, was the sponsored pet. She was adopted into her forever home shortly thereafter.
“For Agent 007, they had specifically talked about that fact that he was a senior cat, which is a tough sell, and he was also difficult to adopt out because he is a black cat, and people have superstitions about that,” said Guidara. “Last year, they chose Egypt. We are happy with whoever they choose; we are happy to support them.”
Guidara emphasized that the reading challenge is open to people of all ages. “Originally, the main target audience was kids and teens, but a lot of adults also wanted to participate, including a lot of older adults,” she noted. “It was an easy way for them to give back. Maybe they can’t financially support ARL,

The couple plans to continue its missionary work with regularly scheduled visits. “(Senegal has) the dry season and the rainy season. We don’t travel during the summer because this is the rainy season when they are planting their crops, so (the pastors) can’t come to us,” she said. “Once you

or they don’t have the ability to volunteer there, so this was a way they could do their part. Kids (can also) learn what they can accomplish when people work together.”
The ARL will announce which pet’s adoption was made possible by the community’s efforts on Monday, July 28.
“Pages for Pets combines two things our community loves: reading and helping animals,” said Guidara. “It’s heartwarming to see people of all ages come together to make a real difference, one page at a time.”
Pages for Pets is designed to coincide with the Summer Reading Programs being offered at Berks County libraries. Libraries have a full schedule of activities for children, teens and adults, as well as reading incentive programs. get off the main road, the roads are sand. We are going out into the bush. A lot of pastors travel by motorcycle or a four-wheeler, and it can be difficult traveling.”
During their visits to Senegal, Mike and Jill may stay in a tent or with in an available house, but with no running water or indoor bathrooms. “We are in hotel sometimes,” she noted, explaining that the conditions are rustic.
Despite the conditions, both Mike and Jill enjoy their mission work and the people they meet. “The people are wonderful. They are so appreciative. They would literally give you the clothes off your back if you needed
them,” Jill said. “It is very gratifying. It makes you feel like you are doing something worthwhile.”
Jill added that some shoppers at the yard sale question why the couple does mission work in a foreign country, rather than the United States. “People say, ‘Why not work here?’ Everyone is called to someplace different. If you are interested in missions, anywhere you are is your mission field,” Jill noted. “If someone is called to do something here, that is great. It’s all about what you are called to do. If the Lord is laying something on your heart, do it.”
