Teenage Actor/Director Recognized With Scholarship

Morgantown resident Lionel McCulloch was named the Casey Feldman Scholarship winner during the 14th annual Cappies Awards Gala held on May 19 at Unionville High School. Lionel is a 2019 graduate of the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School (PALCS) and the Center for Performing and Fine Arts (CPFA) in West Chester.

Lionel, a member of the Greater Philadelphia Area Cappies, explained that the Cappies program trains high school theater and journalism students to strengthen their writing and critical thinking skills by attending

productions at other schools and writing reviews of those shows.

Select reviews are published in a Philadelphia newspaper and at www.cappies.com. “(The participating schools) have a night where they set off a section for the Cappies critics,” Lionel explained. “I like writing the reviews, and seeing shows helps build your skills as a director and an actor.”

Lionel performed in the opening number during the Cappies gala and was also nominated for the Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical award for his role in the CPFA production of “City of Angels” and for the Outstanding Senior Critic award for his Cappies

reviews.

Lionel said he did not know that he received the scholarship until the night of the gala. “They have this special section when they talk about Casey Feldman, her life and what she had accomplished,” he noted. “Then, they said, ‘We would like to recognize a very special person in theater,’ and I started understanding who they were talking about: They were talking about me.”

The $1,000 scholarship is given in memory of Casey Feldman, who was killed by a distracted motorist in 2009 at the age of 21. Elverson Borough Plans Annual Day In The Park DAR Presents

History Awards

Elverson Borough will present the ninth annual Elverson Day in the Park celebration in Livingood Park, 101 S. Chestnut St., Elverson, on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 5 p.m. The event will include food, tethered hot air balloon rides, musical entertainment, children’s activities and more. The day will conclude with a giant fireworks display at approximately 9 p.m.

Attendees are invited to bring their own food to eat in the park that day, or they may purchase dinner from several food trucks that will be on-site. The menu will range from burgers and fries and farm-to-fork specials to snow cones and iced coffee.

Local musicians that will perform throughout the evening will include Ring of Fire, a Johnny Cash impersonator; Carol Ruffner and Company; and Dawson Estes. The Chester County

Livingood Park will be the site of the ninth annual Elverson Day in the Park on June 29. The day will feature music, food, children’s activities, tethered hot air balloon rides and more.

“When the Chester County Band is done with their set, we set off the fireworks. We try to follow the band’s last song,” noted Katie Estes, a member of

the Elverson Day Committee.

The Chester County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently presented Outstanding Achievement in American History Awards to local middle school students.

As part of the annual program, all private and public schools in the county are welcome to participate. “I send out a personalized invitation around April to each of our schools in Chester County explaining what the award is and inviting them to participate,” explained Kym Dyer, history award committee chair. “We sent 21 invitations and all of the schools participated; we had 100 percent participation.”

Home Canning Class Planned “Home Food Preservation: Tomatoes and Salsa” will be the theme of a class held on Tuesday, July 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Penn State Extension Berks County office, 1238 County Welfare Road, Leesport. It will explain the scientific reasoning behind today’s recommended methods for making and processing tomatoes and salsa, while dispelling food preservation myths and discouraging unsafe practices of the past.

The class will cover the basics of water bath and atmospheric steam canning; canning recommendations, based on the latest USDA guidelines, on acidifying tomatoes; use of salt; use of research-tested recipes in canning salsa and other tomato products for safety; and fruit salsas.

In memory of David Turner Jr., the David’s Drive 831 charity recently purchased an automated external defibrillator (AED), an emergency life-saving device for use in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, and placed it at Triple Fresh Market in Coatesville, where David was once employed.

The charity was founded in honor of David, who died of a suspected heart arrhythmia at the age of 20 on Dec. 16, 2009, while working at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.

“Samantha (David’s sister) was instrumental in making (the AED donation) happen ... and we are proud … that she made it all about stopping this from happening to other families,” stated David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive 831. “If this was available to David when it first happened, (there might have been a different outcome).

According to www.aed.com, an AED is a portable device that analyzes the heart rhythm and administers an electrical charge to the heart if needed to establish a regular heartbeat in the event of cardiac arrest. When switched on, the AED will instruct the user to connect the pads to a patient’s bare chest.

The pads enable the AED to examine the patient’s heart and determine if the patient is in a viable, shockable rhythm. If the device determines that a shock is required, it will charge in preparation to deliver a shock. The AED is very safe as it will only charge if it determines a shock-

able rhythm is present. “(The AED at Triple Fresh) is registered with Chester County and the PulsePoint App. (First responders with the app) will get an alert on their phone, and it will tell them where the closest AED is in the area,” Turner explained, noting that since the AED is portable it can be used outside the store building. “It’s not just for Triple Fresh customers and employees. It’s for the community. People can follow the instructions, use the machine and help the person before the ambulance even gets there. It’s very high-tech, but supposedly simple to use.”

Purchasing the AED is David Drive’s most recent effort in the community. Recently, the charity continued its annual Memorial Day tradition by delivering donated items, including socks, T-shirts and underwear, to the Coatesville VA Medical Center.

The donations were collected during the 10th annual David’s Drive picnic and collection event held on May 19 at the Turner family home in Coatesville.

On Memorial Day, volunteers met at East Fallowfield Park, where last-minute donations of underwear, socks and T-shirts were collected before a caravan of vehicles departed for the VA Medical Center. The group was escorted by members of local fire companies and motorcycle riders. Upon arrival, the volunteers formed a human assembly line to unload all the bags of donations.

“On Memorial Day, $100,000 worth of underwear was delivered to the Coatesville VA, bringing David Drive’s 10-year total to a half a million dollars’ worth of underwear donated to homeless and hospitalized veterans,” Turner reported.

Dorsheimer Receives Degree, County Adopts C-PACE Program Will Pursue Doctorate fields and will afford her an annual $34,000 stipend for three years. The graduate school she will attend in the fall, Columbia University in New York City, will receive an additional annual $12,000 to cover her educational expenses. Dorsheimer will pursue a doctorate in organic chemistry research.

Attending Columbia University has been Dorsheimer’s goal since high school.

Dorsheimer’s previous research experiences include the FUTURE Summer Research Program at Ursinus and conducting research in Walvoord’s lab. In the 201819 school year, she gave a presentation at an American Chemical Society event.

Julia Dorsheimer celebrated her induction into the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. The recent Ursinus College graduate will attend Columbia University in the fall to pursue a doctorate in organic chemistry research.

organizations have collaborated to develop the program in the state: Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance (KEEA), Philadelphia Energy Authority, City of Pittsburgh Sustainability Commission, and Sustainability Energy Fund. Chester County is the first county in the southeastern Pennsylvania region to adopt this program.

The Sustainable Energy Fund will administer the program in Chester County and connect project developers to authorized contractors and lenders. Sustainable Energy Fund has lent money throughout Pennsylvania for such programs for two decades.

2.49 Outstanding Achievement in American History Awards are given to students who are chosen by the staff members at local public and parochial schools.

“The students recognized for this award are chosen by a committee of their school’s guidance counselors, eighth-grade counselors and American history teachers. This award is not taken lightly, and at least one school has an end-of-the-year exam to help determine the recipient,” said Dyer. “The teachers decide which eighth-grade student they feel is excited about American history and has excelled in American history.”

The winners are announced at end-of-year awards ceremonies held at the schools. Educators have the option of presenting the awards themselves or having a DAR member visit to present the award. This year, seven of the awards were presented by DAR members.

The chosen students receive a certificate, a congratulatory letter and a bronze medal to commemorate this award. “The medal comes from our national DAR,” Dyer pointed out. “We have people from the national DAR sign the certificate and our local regent signs the certificate, and it is personalized for each student. The names are entered into the national DAR records as well as our local DAR records.”

This year, the students’ congratulatory letter written by Dyer stated, “It is our sincere hope you will continue to pursue this love of learning and interest in our American history throughout your education and throughout your life.”

Chester County’s resolution authorizes the establishment of a propertyassessed clean energy program in the county and further directs necessary county personnel to move forward to effect a county-wide C-PACE program.

Julia Dorsheimer of Honey Brook graduated from Ursinus College on May 18. Dorsheimer, a member of Twin Valley High School’s Class of 2015, graduated summa cum laude from Ursinus with honors in chemistry and a minor in math. Additionally, on May 16, she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society.

Dorsheimer has been accepted into the 2019 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. This program recognizes and supports individuals early in their graduate training in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)

The Chester County commissioners recently approved a resolution calling for the county to participate in C-PACE, a clean energy financing program for commercial properties. C-PACE, which stands for Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy, is a financial tool for commercial property owners to obtain low-cost, long-term financing for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation projects. C-PACE can facilitate a loan for a project by placing a voluntary lien on the property that repays the costs of the upgrades.

Pennsylvania is one of more than 30 states that has enabled C-PACE. Four public-sector and nonprofit

Several demonstrators will work with textiles - spinning, flax processing, discussing dye plants, making tape and quilting.

There are a total of 50 National Child Care Teacher Award recipients for 2019.

The Kindness Festival, featuring games, prizes, vendors, food and more, will take place in West Brandywine Park, 198 Lafayette Road, Coatesville, on Saturday, June 29, from noon to 5 p.m.

The event, with proceeds to benefit Justice Rescue, an animal rescue team, is being presented

by Justin’s Foundation for Kindness, a charity named in memory of Justin Hayes, who died in May of 2016 at the age of 29.

His mother, Melissa Falvo, and his brother, Alex Hayes, founded the charity, which has the motto of “Let Kindness Be Your Footprint.”

will also set up an information table. “We will also offer kindness affirmation bracelets to remind people every day that they are important,” said Falvo.

She said the charity’s efforts include supporting locally based animal rescues and helping people in need. “We help a lot of underprivileged families in poor areas of the county,” said Falvo.

“Last year at Thanksgiving, we did a coat drive and a winter clothing drive. We donated more than 300 coats and blankets to families in Chester County, and we sponsor families over the holiday, too.”

Falvo, chairperson of the West Brandywine Parks and Recreation Board, said this is the third Kindness Festival held in West Brandywine, where Justin was once employed as a township maintenance department worker. She reported that nearly 1,500 visitors turned out for last year’s festival. The event is held to continue Justin’s efforts to help others, including animals.

“When he passed, we didn’t know all the acts of kindness he did. He lived in Florida for a while and graduated from the police academy there, and I received lots of notifications about acts of kindness that he did (while there) and in West Brandywine Township that I didn’t know about,” Falvo said. “We want to continue that. (The Kindness Festival) is what we are doing to continue his footprint and make a difference.”

year will be a book reading by local author Lauren Nappi from Morgantown. Nappi released her book, “A Peanut’s Tale: A Duckling’s Journey on Children’s Lake,” in April.

There will also be a Touch-aTruck area with a fleet of trucks and machines for children to explore.

Returning this year will be a sports challenge for elementary school children in which participants will be asked to throw footballs and kick soccer goals, among other tasks.

Children who complete the various activities in the park can have a bingo card stamped to earn tickets they can use to enter a drawing to win a new bicycle. “Five activity stamps earn one ticket, seven activity stamps earn two tickets, and a full bingo card (15 stamps) earns five tickets,” Katie explained. “Walmart donates a gift certificate for a children’s bike so the (winner) can pick it out themselves.”

In addition, vendors will be on hand offering items for sale.

Local organizations and government representatives will also have information tables set up.

The tradition of holding Elverson Day in the Park began in 2011, when Elverson residents celebrated the borough’s centennial by gathering at Livingood Park on a Saturday at the end of June. The event has been held each year since.

“We get a lot of people from Morgantown - really people from all over. A lot of the Elverson people walk (to the event), and we encourage to them to do that since parking is limited,” said Katie. “Our best estimate is that between 300 and 500 (attend). We try to keep everything free other than the food and the hot air balloon rides.”

She noted that the Elverson Day Committee begins meeting in January to prepare for the popular summertime event. “We do tweak it from year to year,” Katie said. “We look for new activities for the kids and different musicians, but we try to keep most of it the same format.

People love the face painting and the pony rides, and the fireworks and the Chester County Band are both staples.”

Businesses Invited To Apply For Disaster Loan Due to the storms that took place during the summer of 2018, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania requested and obtained a Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Declaration.

EIDL assistance is available only to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, and most private nonprofit organizations in the designated counties and after the SBA determines they are unable to obtain credit elsewhere.

EIDLs provide the necessary working capital to help small businesses survive until normal operations resume after a disaster. The SBA can provide up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating

expenses that could have been met had the disaster not occurred. The loan amount will be based on the actual economic injury and the company’s financial needs, regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage.

Vehicle Safety Checklist Posted Many people do not realize the consequences of putting off needed vehicle maintenance. Not only can neglecting vehicle service cause safety issues if ignored, but it can lead to costly repairs down the road.

The nonprofit Car Care Council suggests drivers follow a vehicle service schedule, keep a free copy of the council’s Car Care Guide in the glovebox, and perform common routine maintenance procedures to keep a vehicle running at its best.

Routine maintenance procedures include: - Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake, and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

- Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors, and drums inspected at each oil change.

- Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear

indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

- Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose, or showing signs of excessive wear.

- Check the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and safety reasons, such as defrosting.

- Check the wipers and lighting

Turkey Burgers with Mango Salsa (Makes 6 servings) Ingredients: 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs 1/3 cup reduced-fat garlic-herb spreadable cheese

2 green onions, chopped 4 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme or 1/4 teaspoon dry thyme 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 pounds lean ground turkey 6 whole wheat hamburger buns, split 3/4 cup premade mango salsa Directions: 1 - In a large bowl, combine the first eight ingredients. Crumble turkey over

mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties.

2 - Moisten a paper towel with cooking oil; using long-handled tongs, lightly coat the grill rack. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from the heat for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, or until a thermometer reads 165 F and juices run clear.

Coatesville VA Launches Program The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched its new community care program, implementing portions of the VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act of 2018 (the MISSION Act), which both ends the Veterans Choice Program and establishes a new Veterans Community Care Program. The MISSION Act is intended to strengthen the nationwide VA health care system by empowering veterans to have more options in their health care decisions.

Under the new Veterans Community Care Program, veterans can now work with their VA health care provider or other VA staff to see if they are eligible to receive community care.
