The Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Class of 2025 held its graduation on June 7 during commencement ceremonies held at the Santander Arena in Reading. The event included performances by the school’s orchestra and senior chorus, a review of the students’ accomplishments over the past four years and remarks by student speakers and administrators.
The class valedictorian was Ashley Siv, the daughter of Kok Siv and Linh Diep, and the salutatorian was Shea Schwabenbauer,
the daughter of Jim and Kristin Schwabenbauer.
Shea provided the opening remarks. “Today marks a major milestone in our lives and celebrates the countless moments that have brought us here,” she said. “As we celebrate today, it’s important to recognize that this moment does not belong to the Class of 2025 alone. It also belongs to every parent, teacher, friend and mentor who supported us along the way and helped us reach this point. To the people behind the scenes - our guidance counselors, cafeteria workers, office staff, bus drivers
and all those whose efforts often go unseen - thank you.”
TVHS principal Bill Clements listed some of the achievements of the class, noting that students earned distinction at both the state and national levels through their involvement in clubs such as the TSA, HOSA and the FFA and that senior class musicians earned placements in honors ensembles at the county, regional and state levels.
He also noted the achievements of the theater arts club and the visual arts club, career and technical education students, and

The public had a rare opportunity to tour the Beidler House in Birdsboro during a spring open house held on June 14 by the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department. The building, which was built in 1783 by Conrad Beidler to serve as a home for the operator of the nearby mill, is only open on select dates throughout the year. In addition to the spring event, the Beidler House holds a Colonial Candlelight Holiday Reception in December.

Cars and Coffee Attracts More Vehicles, Attendees
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Since Cars and Coffee began in Saint Peters Village in 2020, not only has the car show grown in attendance, but the number of vehicles that participate has increased as well.
Aaron Phillips is the founder of Cars and Coffee, which is held in the historic village on the second Sunday of the month, weather permitting, from 8 to 11 a.m. There is no admission
fee for spectators or car owners. Vehicles are parked in the lot across from the Saint Peters Village post office, 3300 Saint Peters Road. “We get 100 to 150 (vehicles each month),” said Phillips, noting that this number is an increase from the 50 to 80 cars that the show attracted previously. “We fill both sides of the lot, and people are coming and going the whole time. It has really grown. We are in the gravel lot and also the paved lots.”

A wide variety of vehicles attend the shows, ranging from motorcycles and classic cars to muscle cars, trucks and Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars.
“You never know what to expect. It’s always something different,” Phillips stated. “We have groups that come month after month, but there are always new people.”
Phillips is a 2022 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School, and he graduated in December 2024 from the Pennsylvania College of Technology. He also owns Devotion Detailing, a car detailing business. “My parents live in the village and own Healing Spirit Café. I still do detailing work in the area as well,” he said, noting he brings his own vehicles to the car shows, including a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII and 1989 Honda Prelude.
Saint Peters Village, which features small shops, a restaurant and a bakery, is located along the French Creek, which cascades over a series of giant rocks behind the shops. Cars and Coffee aims to showcase the village, encourage visitors to shop and dine locally and provide a place for car enthusiasts to meet one another.
“It’s up the visitors, but we encourage people to walk the village and check out the shops,” said Phillips. “The food and coffee are great, especially from the bakery. You can bring your vehicle and enjoy the day.”
For next month’s Cars and Coffee on Sunday, July 13, members of the Delaware Valley Jaguar Club have chosen Saint Peters Village to be a part of their Destination Drive road trip.
“They will bring classic and modern Jags,” Phillips explained. “If anyone in the area has a Jaguar, this would be a good month to (attend). They would love to have other Jag enthusiasts.” He noted that the club will have information about membership for those who are interested.
“One of my clients is the head of the club and schedules a Destination Drive in the French Creek area,” he added. “They will eventually (travel along) Route 345 to the Mascaro Automotive Museum in Birdsboro.”
Phillips hopes that the car shows will continue long into the future.

There is a general rule that weekly papers do not use headlines that are weather-related because the information may be inaccurate by the time the paper reaches its readers. For example, we would never use a headline that read, “Event Held Despite Frigid Temperatures” or “Summer Heat Causes 5K Run To Be Rescheduled.” It is quite possible, especially in Pennsylvania, that the area is no longer experiencing summer heat or frigid temperatures.
In fact, residents of Pennsylvania may experience all four seasons in the same day! It is not uncommon in the transitional months like March and September to start the day off wearing shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops and, as the winds change, you end the day needing a coat, jeans and a sweater. On some days it is not uncommon to bundle up the kids for the school bus for the ride in, but when they come home, their coats and mittens are missing, most likely left at school.
I clearly remember attending a stock car race several years ago, which was just over the Pennsylvania state line in Maryland. The day began with warm temperatures, but by mid-day, we spectators were running to our cars to hopefully fetch jackets or
sweatshirts that were stored there. By the end of the evening during the last race, light snow began to fall. Personally, I love snow and the way it blankets the earth, making everything clean and beautiful. And, while my view may not be popular, I am not a fan of summer. Summer in Pennsylvania is when we hear those dreaded words “stifling humidity” and “oppressive heat.” Last summer, the actual temperature reached 104 degrees at one point.
This opinion may also be unpopular, but I love the rain. I love lying in bed listening to the rain hit the roof. Add a good book, a mug of tea and my two dogs, and I consider the day perfect.
While Pennsylvania has four seasons, there are also “in-between” seasons like false spring. This is when there is a sudden snowstorm on Easter morning or when home gardeners lose their new plantings to frost.
Then there is always a time when summer won’t let go. It often gets very hot during the first week of September when all the kids are back to school. In my lifetime, I have also seen snow on Halloween and a 70-degree Christmas Eve.
We are lucky, however, to live in

The open house featured guided tours of the historic stone home and historical demonstrations. Visitors were also invited to walk to the nearby aqueduct, which was built adjacent to the house by the Schuylkill Navigation Company in 1824.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted by costumed interpreters. Before entering the home, they were able to view a set of tools displayed by landscaper and gardener Greg Geesaman, who specializes in historical gardening practices. He noted that some of the tools were yard sale finds. He spoke about the importance of clearing land to establish gardens. “When (the Colonists) first came over and started farming, garden tools were one of the most valuable things a family could have. They would determine if they ate that winter or not,” said Geesaman. “If you were 4 to 5 years old or if you were 80 years old and you were able, you were out working in the garden to provide food.”
Tours of the Beidler House were led by Erin Baker, who showed participants the various bedrooms in the home, which featured “rope beds,” which are beds that support a mattress with ropes rather than a box spring.
“This is what they would have slept on,” Baker explained. “You would tighten these ropes really tight, which was where the phrase ‘sleep tight’ comes from. They would put a straw mattress over the top of (the ropes), and over that would be a down or feather mattress. As long
as the ropes were tight, we would imagine it as being comfortable. They were not sleeping directly on the ropes.”
Art instructor Peggy Allen was on hand at the event to discuss theorem painting, which is using stencils to make drawings or paintings on fabric or paper. She explained that multiple stencil overlays are used to create what appears to be a 3D image.
During the open house, visitors were invited to try their hand at theorem painting, creating an image of an apple tree. One stencil was used to create the tree and branches, while another stencil created the red apples. “When you use the stencil, there must be a lot of paint on the brush and you color everything inalmost like you are using a crayon,” Allen explained. “Then you use a second stencil on top. We are building the picture.”
Allen noted said that early Americans made their own artistic supplies. “Back in the day, they did not have stores where you could go buy things, so they made their own paints and their own brushes,” she said. “They also made their own stencil and paper.”
“Some of the linen, like velvet and silk, was imported from Europe, but a lot of people made their own fabric by spinning flax,” Allen continued. “Whatever material they could afford, they would use.”
Theorem painting was an early American art form that was popular during the early to mid-1800s. “It became popular because Colonial families did not have much in the way

a place where we can experience all the different seasons. This helps us to appreciate the extremes. Only when the heat and humidity have been stifling can we appreciate a cooling summer rainstorm. And, when the temperatures are freezing and below, we can really enjoy the warmth of the sun on our faces. The same is true after several days or weeks of intermittent rain; the sudden appearance of the sun can warm our hearts. It is best to appreciate all types of weather and the best of each season. Fall is when the leaves on the trees sport vibrant colors like reds and golds. Winter may be cold, but it is also the time we gather with friends and family to celebrate the Christmas holiday. Spring is when the trees come to life, and flowers start to bloom. Even summer can be appreciated because it is a time to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables grown by local gardeners like watermelon and corn on the cob. It is always a good idea to be prepared. If you have out-of-town guests coming to Pennsylvania for a visit this summer, tell them to pack the
of décor. They were looking for things they could make themselves and hang on the wall,” said Allen, noting that it was also common for people to stencil trunks, floors and drapes.
“I teach theorem painting at nine historic locations in three counties, including the Beidler House, because it is a dying art form,” Allen added. “People need to understand what it is.”
Allen will conduct a theorem painting workshop at the Beidler House on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. The workshop will offer a basic introduction to theorem painting, and participants will have an opportunity to create their own painting from a selection of designs. There will be a fee for materials. For more information and to register, visit www.facebook.com/ berkscountyparks/events and select the “Theorem Painting Workshop” event on Aug. 23.

following items: T-shirts and shorts; a swimsuit; flip-flops; an umbrella and a rain slicker; and most importantly, a sweater, heavy jacket or coat. They
may also want to check their car’s heat and air conditioning because it is quite possible that both will be used on the same day.
TVHS student-athletes. “They’ve broken numerous school records and earned multiple individual medals and recognition, including AllLeague, All-State, All-American and Academic All-American,” he stated. “Their hard work, determination and skill led to team championships in various sports over the past four years, including cross-country, field hockey, football, lacrosse, tennis, track and field and volleyball.”
He noted that seniors planned spirit weeks, homecoming events and the prom; organized collections for local food banks; held holiday gift drives for children; raised funds for area charities; and volunteered their time to clean up roadside litter.
He credited the TVHS Mini-THON Club for its work to raise money for
the Four Diamonds organization.
“This class was offered over $14 million in merit aid and scholarships from colleges and universities; that’s the highest total on record at Twin Valley High School,” he reported, adding that 54 TVHS graduates will enter the workplace; 183 plan to continue their education at colleges, universities or technical schools; and several graduates have enrolled in ROTC programs or will attend military academies.
Secretary Angel Altringer and treasurer Carmelo Medina also provided remarks and announced the senior class gift, which is repainting the foursquare court of the senior lounge and purchasing benches to be placed outside the gymnasium entrance.
Class speaker Dakota Paton presented a talk with the theme “Caught in the Middle.” “When we hear the phrase ‘caught in the middle,’ it often comes with the negative connotation like being stuck, pulled between two forces or lost in the shuffle, but if we really pause and look closer being in the middle is actually a privilege,” she said, noting that she is one of nine children in her family. “We’re standing on the bridge between who we were and who we’re becoming, and it’s both exciting and terrifying. We get to remember where we came from while we are reaching for what comes next, and we carry the past while shaping the future.”
Superintendent Robert Scoboria also provided advice to the students. “Don’t stop working when you’re tired; stop when the task is done,” he said. “Surround yourself with people who inspire you to be better and do the right thing all the time, not just when others are watching.”
“As you take your next steps, never forget where your journey began,” added Gary McEwen, president of the Twin Valley Board of School Directors. “Twin Valley is your foundation, and no matter where life takes you, it will always be your home.”
