Shepherd’s Kitchen Hosts Free Community Dinner

Folks are invited to enjoy a free dinner along with fellowship with their friends and neighbors as part of the Shepherd’s Kitchen meal ministry offered at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church.

Free dinners are served at the church on the first Thursday of the month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the exception of January and July. July’s meal will be held on Thursday, July 11, due to the Independence Day holiday.

The dinner generally includes an entree, salad, side dishes, dessert and beverages. Past meals have included meatloaf with potatoes and green beans, ham and turkey for the holidays, homemade chicken potpie, shepherd’s pie and homemade soups.

The meal on June 6 consisted of pasta with sauce, bread, tossed salad with dressing and an assortment of

desserts. “Next month, we will have a picnic,” said volunteer Lynn Klumpp.

“We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad and baked beans.”

She noted that the food comes from the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), is donated by local grocery stores and is purchased with monetary donations that are placed in a collection bin at each meal.

“We don’t want to (ask for donations), but some people said they would not come unless they could (donate),” Klumpp said.

All food is prepared by volunteers.

While most volunteers at the meal are congregation members, others also assist with the ministry, which was founded by a group of ladies at the church, led by Peggy Stapleford.

Klumpp said that about 70 people of all ages attend the dinner each month.

Animal House Project’s Chester County Pet Food Pantry will hold its first golf outing at the Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook, on Friday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will be used to raise much-needed funds for operational costs for the organization’s three pantries - one in North Coventry, one in Downingtown and a military pantry located in Leesport.

According to the ministry’s advertising coordinator, Betty Kennedy, who is co-leader of the Clothing Closet with Sherri Reigel, the ministry is designed to help people with financial difficulties, those who have recently moved, and new parents who are looking for baby clothing and

equipment. “We have had domestic violence situations where the moms had to leave (suddenly) with their kids. There’s a lot of low income in Birdsboro, so we fill their needs (as well),” Kennedy said. “Some of the older people will come in and only take three or four things. It gives them something to do.”

Kennedy reported that items that are especially needed are summer clothing, including sandals; sneakers; towels; kitchen items; baby equipment, such as strollers, portable play yards, bottles, and cups; and personal care items.

“People are telling us that their needs are for hygiene products, like deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, and bar soap,” she stated.

Kennedy noted that the church works in cooperation with other organizations, including Anchored

by Grace Ministry, a mobile clothing closet at Morgantown Community Church, which shares clothing with the Birdsboro church, as well as Ian’s Boots. “Whenever we need shoes, I give them a ring and tell them what sizes we need,” she said.

“It’s been good reaching out to different groups in the area to help each other.”

Kennedy added that she is not a member of Birdsboro Church of the Nazarene, but enjoys volunteering at the Clothing Closet. “I came in a couple of years ago with my daughter when she was about 10 or 11 because I needed her to have a volunteer experience, and I stayed,” she said.

She emphasized that all people are welcome to take needed items, not just those who reside in Birdsboro. “If you need help, that’s what we’re here for,” Kennedy said.

SCORE Honors Small Businesses SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties, which provides free professional business counseling to entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofits in Chester and Delaware counties, hosted its ninth annual Small Business Achievement Awards Luncheon on May 30 at the Concord Country Club.

Citadel, sponsor of the event for all nine years, has supported SCORE in its development of a new format for the annual event. Federal, state, and local elected officials, as well as educational, community, and business leaders from both counties, were present to congratulate the award winners and to recognize SCORE for its contributions to the small business community.

Association Sets Annual “Wool Pool” The Berks County Sheep and Wool Growers Association will sponsor its annual “wool pool” on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29. Wool will be collected at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, on June 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. and again at the Leesport Farmers Market, 312 Gernants Church Road, Leesport, from 8 a.m. to noon on June 29.

Wool will be purchased by Groenewold Fur and Wool Company out of Forreston, Ill. of income; we are asking for their name, how many people they have in their family, and what their needs are. For example, someone may come in say they need a women’s size 10 (pair of) jeans.

So, as we are sorting, we can put aside what they are looking for.”

During most distributions, people age 10 and up may choose 10 items. “We had 65 bags of donations (recently) so (for the last distribution) they could choose an unlimited amount,” noted Kennedy.

The clothing is sorted by volunteers and placed in various rooms in the church’s basement. Men’s and women’s items are placed in one room, and another room houses children’s clothing for infants through teenagers. “We go through all the donations to make sure they are not stained or torn or missing buttons,” Kennedy said.

Additionally, visitors may choose from household goods that have been donated, as well as personal care items. “The household items are a bonus. If it happens to get donated, we will take it,” Kennedy said.

Ludwigs Corner from pg 1 Those who regularly travel along Route 401 may not realize that the roadway was once known as the Conestoga Turnpike, complete with tollbooths, long before the Pennsylvania Turnpike came to be.

That will be one of the interesting historical facts that will be presented during the Town Tours and Village Walks program that will make a stop in West Vincent Township on Thursday, June 20.

“Ludwigs Corner c. 1770: A Stop on the Conestoga Turnpike” will be presented at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 7 St. Andrew’s Lane, Glenmoore. Tour hours will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Town Tours and Village Walks program is presented each summer by the Chester County Planning Commission as part of an effort to highlight local communities. The theme for this year is “Then and Now.” “We did an Underground Railroad tour several years ago, but this one is specifically about buildings on Conestoga Road and Ludwigs Corner,” explained Jane Helm, who is a member of a group of West Vincent historians who will host the tour. “Since the theme is ‘Then and Now,’ we will try to make comparisons of how (the area) has changed and how it stayed the same.”

On June 20, visitors will be invited to view historical displays in the church. Additionally, the St. Andrew’s Episcopal minister will be in the sanctuary to talk

about the historic church and an architectural historian will be on hand to will give talks about different buildings on Route 401 and in Ludwigs Corner. Visitors may also explore the church’s historic cemetery.

One site that will be highlighted is the building currently home to Ludwig’s Grill and Oyster Bar, which had many different uses, including a general store and post office. Around 1811 when Jacob Ludwick Sr., for whom the area is named, bought shares in the 17.5mile Conestoga Turnpike, he also purchased 14 acres along the road from his son-in-law, Henry Miller.

There, he built a tavern and coach stand, which he named the Captain Lawrence. “(Capt. Lawrence) came out of the War of 1812 and said, ‘Don’t give up the ship,’” said Helm. “The owner was fascinated with him (and named the inn after him).”

All attendees will be given a driving map of local buildings that are historically significant.

“Most of them are private residences, but St. Matthews United Church of Christ (UCC) will be open that night,” said Helm. “The sanctuary is unchanged since the 1880s. It’s a lovely building.”

She explained that originally, two congregations shared a church, which was situated where St. Matthews UCC cemetery is currently located. Lutheran and Reformed congregations shared the building and alternated services every other Sunday.

“Around 1880, the two congregations wanted their own

church - St. Matthews Lutheran Church and St. Matthews UCC, which was formerly St. Matthews German Reformed Church,” she stated. “Both churches were built about the same time by the same architect. It was fairly common (for churches to share space). The Evangelical Lutheran church and the German Reformed church shared a space for about 50 years.”

Helm encourages local residents to attend the upcoming tour, especially those who travel the Route 401 corridor. “We’re hoping to get people from all over the county, but especially local residents,” she said. “Commuters and residents drive down this historic road and cross through the intersection every day, but few know the rich history behind the road and its many historic buildings.”

The tour is free of charge. St Andrew’s Episcopal Church is located on Route 401 west of Route 100. Overflow parking will be available at the rear of the Ludwig’s Village shopping center, 2904 Conestoga Road, Glenmoore.

“Lately, we have been getting a lot of newcomers.”

She emphasized that those who attend the meal are not asked to attend Sunday services unless they are interested.

Church members are on hand to welcome guests and to talk with visitors. “We get to know people.

If someone comes in and has a problem, we can sometimes help them out,” said Klumpp. “It’s been a nice community thing.”

In addition to the hot dinner, a cart is on hand at the monthly meal that offers nonperishable food items that diners may take home with them. As summer goes on, fresh produce will also be available.

Although the church has been serving meals to the community since 2012, the Shepherd’s Kitchen has recently been revitalized. “We really changed to make more comfort food in the last couple of years,” Klumpp point out. “Our numbers were dwindling, and we had to change things. We asked the people what they wanted, and it has worked out really well.”

She said the revamping of the meal ministry included a visit to St. Peter United Church of Christ in Knauertown, which offers a free community dinner on the last Friday of each month. Since the Shepherd’s Kitchen meal ministry started first, representatives from St. Peter’s visited the Honey Brook church as well.

Attendees will create a colorful basket great for collecting small pieces of kindling for the hearth.

Day At The Park Elverson Day at the Park will be held on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 5 p.m. Featured will be several food trucks, offering items such as burgers and fries, farm-to-fork specials, snow cones and iced coffee.

There will also be performances by local musicians, including Ring of Fire, Carol Ruffner and Company and the Chester County Band, Children’s activities will include pony rides, face painting, a moon bounce, an exotic animal petting zoo, T-shirt decorating and a barrel train ride. There will also be a display of trucks and machines.

Fireworks will conclude the evening at dusk. Rain date for the event is on Sunday, June 30.

EWC Hike Members of the Elverson Walking Club (EWC) will do a short hike of 3 to 4 miles on the western section of State Games Lands #43 on Sunday, June 30. Community members are welcome.

The hike will go uphill to the communication tower and back on well-defined trails. The hike leader will be Lynn Bates.

EWC will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the small parking area on Harmonyville Road, located 1 mile west of Route 345 and .25 miles east of Park Road. For GPS users, the address is 3776 Harmonyville Road, Elverson.

Vacation Bible School Robeson Lutheran Church and Preschool, 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton, will host a vacation Bible school (VBS) from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday to Friday, June 24 to 28, and Sunday, June 30.

The Black Women of Chester County In Action (BWCCA), a newly formed nonprofit organization, will hold an Aya Café and Wellness Fair on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) building, 22 N. Fifth Ave., Coatesville. The free event will feature an optional 1-mile walk, complimentary breakfast and lunch and information about ways to improve women’s health.

The program is free and open to all women age 16 and over.

BWCCA member Connie Rose, one of the event organizers, explained that BWCCA has adopted the African symbol Aya as its logo. An Aya is a fern that symbolizes endurance and resourcefulness. According to “The Adinkra Dictionary,” which defines symbols of West Africa, a person who wears the Aya symbol suggests that he or she has endured adversity and outlasted many challenges.

On the day of the café and wellness fair, women will enjoy a

light breakfast, a brief introduction and a drumming circle.

Attendees will then view a short video presented by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls before the walk begins.

“Built Fitness will do a walking clinic before the walk,” noted Rose. “They will talk about the benefits and techniques for walking and do warm-ups. WalkWorks of Chester County mapped out a 1-mile walk in the area.” The walk will be held rain or shine.

When the attendees return to the OIC, there will be healthrelated vendors and community partners on hand to provide information. “La Comunidad Hispana will be a vendor, and they will have health check stations so you can get your blood pressure checked,” noted Rose.

Attendees will receive a box lunch to conclude the event.

Cheryl Miles founded BWCCA in response to a report titled “Blueprint: Leveraging Progress,” which was introduced by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls in September 2016.

discuss the report’s findings about African-American women in Chester County, and the group determined that the three areas that most needed to be addressed were education, economics and health.

“The whole focus is really to improve the lives of women and girls in Chester County,” said Rose. “Right now, we are focusing on health care, particularly self-care, making sure we are giving people tools and information to best take care of themselves.

After that, we will go into the other areas of focus.”

The Chester County Fund for Women and Girls honored Miles with its Kitchen Table Award at the 14th annual Making a Difference Luncheon held on May 3.

Since its formation, BWCCA hosted an inaugural breakfast in December 2018 and sponsored a Black Professional Women’s Network Gathering in January. In June, Chester County Fund for Women and Girls awarded BWCCA a $6,000 grant to launch the Aya health project. OIC president and CEO Joyce Chester, Miles and other BWCCA members attended the grants celebration.

“In March, (we hosted a program with) women of color who were running for office in Chester County,” noted Rose.

Penn State Extension Chester County 4-H will hold a babysitting class on Monday, July 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. located at the Penn State Extension Chester County office, 601 Westtown Road, Suite 370, West Chester.

The class is designed to help prepare youths age 11 and older for babysitting. Each participant will learn characteristics and needs of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; safety and basic first aid; and other topics related to caring for someone else’s child and for oneself when home alone.

Participants will receive a babysitting certificate upon successful completion of the program. A cost for the class has been set, which includes 4-H membership, and there is a lower fee for current 4-H members.

Charlotte Tompkins of Coatesville was selected as the Penn State Extension of Chester County summer assistant for its 4-H Youth Development program.

Tompkins will work with 4-H Extension educators and staff members to provide informal educational experiences and activities for youths. She will travel throughout the county to assist with 4-H programming and outreach efforts to urban and rural communities.

Tompkins is currently a senior at Penn State University pursuing a degree in animal science with a minor in equine science. A 4-H alumna, she was involved in 4-H program for about eight years and served as the 2015 Pennsylvania 4-H State Council reporter.

The Chester County commissioners recognized the efforts of leadership, board members and staff of the Chester County Planning Commission at a recent Sunshine public meeting, noting national and regional accolades for Landscapes3, Chester County’s newly adopted long-range comprehensive plan. Landscapes3 has received a national award from the American Planning Association (APA) County Planning Division and an Achievement Award in Planning from the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Additionally, the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association presented Chester County with the Public Leadership Award at its May annual meeting, based on the newly adopted Landscapes3 Plan and the county’s support of smart transportation options.

The APA presented Chester County with an Award of Excellence in the Comprehensive Plan - Large Jurisdiction category for Landscapes3 at the APA National Conference in San Francisco in mid-April.

Landscapes3 seeks to balance preservation and growth across the county’s landscapes in six goal areas: Preserve, Protect, Appreciate, Live, Prosper, and Connect. The plan recommits to core principles that are intended to position the county and its municipalities for success, including resource preservation, revitalized urban and suburban centers, housing diversity, transportation choices, collaboration, and resiliency.

The plan establishes a preservation and growth vision for the county and its municipalities, guides county government decision-making, guides municipal planning and implementation, and provides a framework for collaboration across municipal boundaries. Development of the plan was guided by the planning commission’s nine-member volunteer advisory board, staff, and a steering committee of 27 members who volunteered their time and expertise.

The planning commission began the update of its 2009 comprehensive plan, Landscapes2, in

late 2016 with the goal of having a new comprehensive plan completed and adopted within the 10year time frame required by the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code.

The planning commission board and staff began implementing the plan after the county commissioners adopted it in late November 2018.

Among the projects currently underway are a study titled “Return on Environment: The Economic Value of Protected Open Space” and a National Register of Historic Places map.

Church To Host Bible School Glen Moore United Methodist Church, 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, will host a “Who Is My Neighbor?” vacation Bible school (VBS) from Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The VBS is free and open to any child age 4 through fifth grade. Groups will have 30 days in September to complete their projects.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will select the eight winning projects from among applications submitted. Selected grantees may seek supplies for only one building per application, and they must provide proof of liability insurance, signed permission to paint from the building owner, and two “before” photos of the intended

project. They must also agree to select a color from the Behr paint line and provide a final report with photos capturing the work in progress, as well as “after” photos.

Grants will be awarded in July.

Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children held a Volunteer Service Award Ceremony on April 17 to honor volunteers with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Due in large part to the more than 11,000 volunteer hours logged in 2018, Friends Association was able to provide a safe place to sleep and permanent housing for 122 families and 270 children.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard, measured by the number of hours of service during a 12-month period or cumulative hours over the course of a lifetime. Awards are given to individuals who have completed 100 or more hours.

Bronze awardees volunteered at least 100 hours, Silver awardees volunteered more than 250 hours, and Gold awardees volunteered at least 500 hours.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award was established in 2003 by President George W. Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make in

“We just got a truck, and we delivered 6,000 pounds of food for 600 families (served at the military pantry),” said Yannessa, noting that plans are underway for similar veterans’ pantries to be established at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Southeastern Veterans Center in Spring City.

Those served by the three pantries include seniors and retired military veterans, returning military personnel, families that have been victims of domestic violence, those who have been struck with high medical costs due to cancer and other diseases and those who have suffered losses in the areas of employment and finances.

The pantry is always in need of pet food donations. Dry and canned cat and dog food can be brought to the North Coventry pantry, which is located at the intersection of Hanover Street and Cedarville Road. The pantry also accepts food for smaller animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits, along with financial donations. Local groups, including businesses, Scout troops and churches, are welcome to conduct pet food drives.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE A perfect dessert for a summer's day, this strawberry shortcake will make you wish it were summer all year round.

- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour - 1/2 tsp. salt - 2 tsp. baking powder - 1/2 cup milk - 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray an 8x8" pan with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside. In a bowl attached to a stand mixer (or with a hand mixer), cream together coconut oil and sugar. Add in eggs, one at a time, and beat thoroughly. In a separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients: flour, salt, and baking powder. Starting and ending with the dry ingredients and with mixer on low speed, alternately add in dry ingredients and the milk and vanilla. Mix until just combined, being sure to not over-mix. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until edges are slightly browned and toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. Serve with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.
