As part of an effort to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and in memory of her mother, Carol, who passed away from the disease in 2017, Lynn Cronomiz of Morgantown will again host the Paint the Town Purple 5K, with all proceeds supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.
This year’s event, which will include a 5K run and 1K fun walk, will take place at the Zerbe Retirement Community, 2499 Zerbe Road, Narvon, on Saturday, June 14. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the 5K and walk will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Participants and attendees are encouraged to wear purple to the event.
This is the third year for the
fundraiser. Paint the Town Purple began in 2023 at Historic Joanna Furnace. This is the second year it is being held at the retirement community.
“We’re hoping to grow it this year. We are trying to attract runners from the Lancaster area (as well),” Cronomiz noted, adding, “The past two years we had beautiful weather. The 5K is professionally timed, and we accurately measured the course to be a 5K.”
Nonrunners and walkers are also invited to attend to cheer on the 5K participants, but it is requested that they arrive by 9:15 am. due to a road closure.
“The run goes out of Zerbe Mansion and down the hill on Zerbe Road and turns right onto Hammertown Road. The Caernarvon Township police will
have half of the road secured and the other half (open) to let out runners,” Cronomiz explained. “Then, they run up the hill about a half mile to the top of Zerbe Road and turn left. They will go along School House Lane, which is on the campus.” She noted that the walkers will stay on the campus on School House Lane.
Retirement community residents are also involved in efforts to support the Alzheimer’s Association. “They did a bingo on May 19, and they raised $310,” she said. “The residents will also do a bake sale at the race.”
There will also be an opportunity for attendees to win gift baskets through a random drawing. 5K participants will get five tickets, but the public may purchase tickets to win prizes, such as Wawa and Olive Garden gift cards.

“It will be fun … like a treasure hunt,” said Melissa Harrop, AgConnect communications coordinator, when describing the Chester County Farmers Market Trail, which invites people to experience 10 different farmers markets across Chester County and collect a stamp at each one. Those who complete a Farmers Market Trail card will receive a special “Ag Swag Bag.”
“Sometimes vendors change, or what each vendor brings week to week may change depending on what their stock is,” Harrop added. “Going to a farmers market is a new experience every time you go. You never know what you are going to find.”
During the first-time event, being presented by AgConnect, local families are invited to take fun road trips to the various markets throughout the county. Participating markets are

Runners and walkers will receive goodie bags and will be provided with bottled water.
Cronomiz said it is important to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association, which helps patients and family members deal with the challenges of the disease. Thanks to the organization, she also reconnected with her friend Pam Haas through an Alzheimer’s Association support group. Haas, who lost her
husband to the disease, is co-director of the race.
Cronomiz noted that the Alzheimer’s Association has made great strides in helping people with the disease. For example, new blood tests are now being used to measure amyloid levels in the blood. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain.
“This (blood test) from a general practitioner helps diagnose people sooner, and they can go to a neurologist and start treatments early,” she said. “That is when they are most affected - at the beginning stages with mild cognitive impairment. What has happened in the last 25 years has been dramatic in getting treatment.”
Cronomiz is also a volunteer and advocate with the Alzheimer’s Association, which seeks to provide increased research dollars and support for caregivers. “I was a business analyst, and I now put all that energy into finding a cure because (my mother’s) death affected me too much,” Cronomiz shared. “I am involved in the advocacy portion where we go to the legislators and ask for more funding.”
“It is my ardent wish that we can finally know the first survivor of Alzheimer’s disease during my lifetime,” she added.
The local race is being held as part the Longest Day initiative. Each year on the summer solstice, the day with the most light, thousands of advocates across the world participate in the Longest Day to “fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s” through an activity of their choice. The Longest Day coincides with Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month in June.

Featuring one of life’s most savory and delicious comfort foods, join with those who have discovered the “from-scratch” meat pies that are made at Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies.
Surrounded by Amish farmlands in the heart of the PA Dutch countryside, this family owned and operated business uses special mouth-watering recipes that are making their beef, chicken, and sausage pies more famous with each passing year.
From the humble beginnings in their Amish farmhouse kitchen to a USDA inspected commercial enterprise, the quality and taste of their pies remains the same, even as the distribution has increased from one market stand to multiple stores and farm markets throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
You are always invited to stop by the Zook’s retail store to stock up on these quick and easy meals that are tasty and nutritious too! In addition to meat pies. Zook’s has a nice selection of specialty food items, including homemade soups, bake-at-home meals and fresh bakery items.

Farmers markets in Chester County offer freshly grown, locally produced products, such as meats, eggs, fresh produce, honey, flowers, wines and ciders. “You have staples - vegetables and meats,” stated Harrop, “but then you have vendors that have artisan things like cheeses, jellies and jams. Those who want to take part in the challenge should look for the Farmers Market Trail yard sign at each farmers market to collect a stamp. “They will stamp on back of the card which farmers market you are at,” said Harrop. “Once all 10 stamps are collected, participants can submit a photo of their completed map through the website or leave their map at their final market stop. They will then be sent a free swag bag.”
People have through the end of December to complete their trail maps. “It’s important for people to realize when summer ends, farmers markets do not. Most of them have winter hours,” Harrop noted. “The northern end to the south-
Harrop said that next year a different map may be featured, such as one that highlights local farms. “We are hoping to have themed trails throughout the years,” she said. “We are starting with farmers markets and talking about next year’s trail that consumers can do to learn about Chester County’s agriculture. If we can get families in the community to understand and learn more about agriculture and the local food system, all the better.”

such as a discounted pet vaccine clinic, AHP aims to keep companion pets in their homes and out of shelters and rescues.
This year, which marks the seventh annual golf outing, is not only being held at a new venue, but will also have different start times than in previous years and include dinner.
The day will start at 11:30 a.m. with registration, and all golfers will receive a boxed lunch. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. At the end of play, a dinner will be served in the ballroom. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets.
The registration fee includes range balls, green fees, the use of a cart, a swag bag, access to the locker rooms and free beverages on the course. There will also be prizes for the best golfers in various categories as well as a $25,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one.
MaryBeth Yannessa, AHP board president, noted last year’s event drew 92 golfers. This year, play is limited to 90 players.
She said that golfers may enjoy playing at Bellewood, which is a private club. “You are playing at an exclusive course,” she said, noting that the course is only open to the public during two or three charity events per year.
Proceeds from the tournament will be used to fund AHP, which began in June of 2001 as the 2 Moon Junction Animal House Project, a no-kill animal rescue group in East Fallowfield Township. After realizing that most of the animals were being surrendered because families could not afford to feed or provide basic veterinary care for them, Yannessa formed the Chester County Pet Food Pantry in 2004. It later became known as Animal House Project.
Most recently, AHP has announced that Diane’s Pet Supplies & Adoption Center, which has had a presence in Chester County since 1989, is now owned by Animal House Project.
“We are now considered a humane society. We have the pet food pantry, the rescue food pantry and we took over Diane’s Pet Supplies, where we offer a low-
cost vaccination clinic,” Yannessa explained. “We have the retail store, which will hopefully help us pay for the rescue operation.”
Yannessa also announced that Diane’s now has a new name - Animal House Retail for Rescue.
Pet food distributions take place on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the pantry, 72 Robinson St., Pottstown.
“The store has a vaccination clinic on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” Yannessa added.
AHP is always in need of financial donations, pet food donations and volunteers willing to work at events and on distribution days. For more information, visit www.animalhouseproject .org or www.facebook .com/AnimalHousePro ject1, call 484-949-8329 or email info@animalhouse project.org.
Bellewood Country Club is located at 400 E. Schuylkill Road (Route 724), Pottstown. The event will be held rain or shine. Individual golfers may also participate and will be placed in groups of four.

A detailed study of the Battle of Brandywine that has been conducted over the last 12 years is now complete. The three-phase study revealed the routes, roads, skirmish sites, and historic buildings and landscapes connected with the Battle of Brandywine, a Revolutionary War battle that took place on Sept. 11, 1777, in Chester County and the surrounding region and spanned approximately 35,000 acres. The study also examined the events of the battle, uncovered French and German journal entries about the battle, and created 1777-era property mapping.
The project was led by the Chester County Planning Commission and the Delaware County Planning Department, with assistance from the Brandywine Battlefield Task Force. All three portions of the study are chronicled in the Brandywine Battlefield Phased Study, a compendium that covers the battlefield’s northern, southern, and eastern areas, which also includes
land in Delaware County and New Castle County, Del.
The study was funded through multiple grants awarded by the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program.
To view more information about the Brandywine Battlefield Phased Study, including an interactive map of battle movements, visit https:// chescoplanning.org/Hist oric/BattleBrandywine .cfm or check out the Chester County Planning Commission and Brandywine Battlefield Task Force Facebook pages.

CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties celebrated the swearing in of its 47th class of new court-appointed special advocates on April 16. The 16 new advocates make up the largest new class in Lancaster County since 2019. CASA staff members, board members, and community supporters gathered at Evermore Events as The Honorable Jeffery J. Reich swore in the new class of volunteers. The event was the culmination of more than 30 hours of training completed by each volunteer in order to assist children in Lancaster and Lebanon counties’ foster care systems.
The new advocates are Jayne Bourke of Lancaster, Fiona Brenek of Morgantown, Danielle DeGroft
of Lancaster, Jennifer Dever of Lancaster, Alisha Eagan of East Petersburg, Krista Fawber of Lancaster, Janet Kacskos of Lancaster, Fran Lusaitis of Landisville, Deana Marakowski of Lebanon, Crystal Martin of Brownstown, Lauren Miller of Mount Joy, Shelah Nyveldt of Bainbridge,
Jessica Pflugler of Willow Street, Angie Ross of Lancaster, Mark Smith of Palmyra, and Barb Valinski of Lancaster.
Court-appointed special advocates are trained volunteers appointed to advocate for the best interests of children who have been placed in the foster care system because of abuse or neglect. The new advocates will join the other volunteers currently advocating for 167 children in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
For more information about CASA and what volunteer advocates do, visit www.casalancleb .org/volunteer or call 717- 286-1430.
