Joanna Furnace To Host Live Music Event

Historic Joanna Furnace is well known in the community for its annual events, including the Hay Creek Festival, the Apple Festival and Christmas at Joanna. Now, another celebration has become a tradition at the historic site - Music at the Furnace.

This year’s Music at the Furnace, which will feature live music and food, including menu items homemade by volunteers with the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), will take place on Friday, June 6. Food will be available for purchase starting at 4:30 p.m., and the music will begin at 5 p.m. While there is no admission to attend the event, a

donation will be received at the gate.

Food available for sale throughout the night will include macaroni and cheese, pulled pork, hot dogs and french fries, as well as hot and cold beverages, ice cream sundaes and root beer floats. Stampede Barbecue and Ale House of Mohnton will also have homemade ale available for purchase.

“There will be something for everyone in food choices, so (guests may) come for dinner, stay for music and then have some dessert,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director.

The opening act will be Elliott Christ, a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Phoenixville. He has performed

at numerous venues as a solo artist, as well as with the New York-based bands The Pony Express and The Big Hat. Christ said that his style is influenced by artists like Bob Dylan and David Bowie. Christ will perform on the Joanna Furnace stage from 5 to 6 p.m. Learn more about his music and other creative work at www.elliottchrist.com.

The featured act will be Second Breakfast, an acoustic duo from the Lancaster area. The duo consists of Jackson and Luke, who are “Lord of the Rings” fans and perform songs from the ’60’s and ’70s Americana and folk music, covering bands such as The Grateful Dead, the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Jackson and Luke each possess a Bachelor of

Science in American history, which contributes to their lyrics that tell stories of the past, present and future. They will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Joanna Furnace stage. More information about the group can be found on Instagram.

Zerr pointed out that the main stage will be located in the center of the grounds by the Joanna Furnace mule stable. “There will be a canopy area available for people to sit,” he said, noting that the event will be held rain or shine. “However, people are welcome to bring their own pop-up tents or folding chairs.”

Also offered throughout the evening will be children’s activities and yard games, such as ball and cup; hoops; marbles; board games, including checkers; tic-tac-toe; and cornhole.

The next event at Historic Joanna Furnace will be a strawberry crumb pie sale. The deadline to order is June 6, and orders may be picked up between noon and 5 p.m. on

Thursday, June 12.

The homemade pies will be made by HCVHA volunteers in the Joanna Furnace kitchen. Also offered for sale will be tapioca pudding, bread pudding and strawberry-rhubarb sauce. The sauce can be used as a topping for ice cream or on waffles and pancakes or may be eaten on its own. To place an order, visit www.haycreek.org/events.

Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, is located just off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown. Proceeds from fundraisers and events benefit the HCVHA, a nonprofit organization that owns, maintains and preserves Historic Joanna Furnace, a charcoal iron furnace that was in operation from 1791 to 1898. Dance Band To Open Honey Brook Concerts in the Park Series

Honey Brook Borough will begin its 2025 Concerts in the Park series on Sunday, June 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a performance by 3rd Power Family Soul, a Lancaster-based band that will perform a variety of musical styles, including funk, disco, soul, jazz, rock ’n’ roll and rhythm and blues. All concerts in the series will take place in Honey Brook Borough Park, 71 Pequea Ave. (Route 10), Honey Brook. In lieu of an admission fee, nonperishable food donations will

be accepted for the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

3rd Power Family Soul is a five-member ensemble that includes founder Mike Smith on bass guitar, Efrem Yates on lead guitar, Diane Yates on lead vocals, Bill Leporte on keyboards and Derrick Wright on drums. The audience can expect to hear cover songs by many popular bands. “It will all be covers - the feel-good type of music - standards that people know and love from Kool & the Gang to James Brown to the Rolling Stones,” said Efrem. “We have a big variety of music.”

Efrem pointed out that the band gets its name from its charismatic and spirited performances. “We are a high-energy band, and we take things to the third power,” he said. “(The name) comes from the bass player, the original founder of this band. We have been together 12 to 15 years.”

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

Animal Rescue

dog bandanas, homemade crafts and other goods to help fund the rescue. With the exception of Saturday, June 7, Ansaldo plans to set up at the farmers market throughout the summer.

Ansaldo has been a veterinarian technician for more than 20 years. She relocated along with her family last year from Delaware County to Birdsboro. “I founded the rescue in December of 2018,” she said, noting that Ghandi’s Refuge was named in memory of her first rescued rabbit, Ghandi. “We have been out of operation for the past few years, and I am hoping to reopen on a much smaller scale at our new home at Fairytail Farm. Profits from the farmers market will benefit this endeavor.”

When in full operation, Ghandi’s Refuge took in small animals such as guinea pigs, cats and many rabbits. Ansaldo explained that people who buy rabbits as gifts on Easter often want to later give them up. “We get an ‘Easter bunny dump’ between Memorial Day and Fourth of July. I want people to understand that rabbits are a long-term commitment - 10-plus years,” she said, adding, “I can take a couple rabbits at a time right now.”

Ghandi’s Refuge is also available to help people with pet care advice. “I want to get education out there about proper pet care and making sure you choose the right pet,” noted Ansaldo. “We want to provide resources for people who want to rehome their pet or help them keep their pet in their homes through assistance with getting pet food or finding training for

(their pet’s) behavioral problems.”

At the farmers market, Ansaldo sells Gardeners Gold, which is liquid fertilizer. “It is a liquid tea made from rabbit manure, and you pour it on or flowers or vegetables, which helps with production. It is a natural fertilizer,” Ansaldo stated. “All the profits will go directly to the rescue. I am hoping the rabbits will fund their own care.”

Ansaldo also offers other items for sale such as drinking glasses that she etched with small pawprints. “I am doing a ‘pupcycled’ line where we take objects commonly discarded as trash and give them a new use,” Ansaldo said. “It goes with our theme that these animals are often discarded as trash, and we believe everyone has purpose. We try to give them (a new) life. Our tag line is, ‘Your value does not decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.’”

To learn more about the rescue and to view bunny rabbits that are currently available for adoption, visit www.facebook.com/ghandis refuge. Those with questions may email Ghandisrefuge@gmail.com. Ansaldo is scheduled to be at the farmers market on Saturday, June 21. The market, located at 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro, is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Soul as an interactive dance band.

“We are a very engaging band. We like crowd participation. Once you come to see us, you are part of the 3rd Power Soul’s family,” he said. “We keep it clean and danceable. Ninety percent of the time people get up and dance.”

The band members are looking forward to playing in Honey Brook for the first time. “Every new venue for us is exciting,” Efrem said. “If people come, it’s up to us to deliver excellence. Let’s have some fun. I think it will be great.”

To learn more about the band and its music, visit www.3rd powerfamilysoul.com.

Following the June 8 concert, three concerts will be featured as part of the series. On Sunday, July 13, Across the Pond will perform Celtic traditional folk

music from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wood Flower, a bluegrass band, will present a concert on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The concert series will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a performance by Local Honey, which will perform music by the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, the Allman Brothers Band and others.

For more information, visit www.honeybrookborough.net, choose “Events” and then select “Concerts in the Park.” Those with questions may email jjenzano@ hbboro.net.

In the event of inclement weather, a decision to cancel the concert will be made by 1 p.m. on the day of the show. A cancellation message will be posted on the website.

hot dogs, potato chips and beverages. There will be an opportunity to win prize baskets, and live musicians will perform throughout the day. There will also be a clown on hand, a balloon artist and children’s games.

A highlight of the day will be guided tours of the site’s mansion. Tours will begin at 11 a.m. and are limited to 20 people.

According to a history of the site, Langoma mansion was built in the late 19th century by Joseph D. Potts, a local ironmaster. The name “Langoma” is a Lenape Indian term meaning “homestead.”

The mansion has 76 rooms and features numerous architectural details like “floating” staircases and ornate woodwork. The mansion includes 22 fireplaces; 22 servant rooms; marble floors; staircases made of marble, onyx and alabaster; and multiple stained-glass windows, including one made of Tiffany glass.

The building is a “double mansion,” meaning both sides are mirrors of each other. One half of the mansion was designed for Joseph and his wife, Mary, and the other for their son, William Potts, and his wife, Mabel. Unfortunately, Joseph died in 1893 and never had a chance to live in the mansion. William finished the

mansion in 1897 and lived there with his mother and his wife. William died in 1943, and the property eventually went to the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, who acquired the Potts mansion in 1948 to be used as a training and education center for children with developmental challenges. In 1984, the children were transferred to a new complex built by the Diocese of Philadelphia in Springfield.

Today, St. Mary of Providence Retreat Center functions as a retreat facility year-round, where people of all denominations can spend time praying and focusing on their spiritual needs. In addition to the religious retreat center, the site includes several buildings that house senior citizens.

All proceeds from the Strawberry Festival and mansion tours are used to maintain the historic property and support the mission of St. Mary of Providence Center.

Admission to the festival is free; a donation will be received for the mansion tours. For more information and to reserve a spot on the tour, visit www.stmaryprov.org/ strawberry. Those with questions may call 610-942-4166 or email providence@stmaryprov.org.
