Village Library welcomes new director

Starting a board game club, a Lego club, a youth chess club and a teen book club; offering yoga classes; and introducing the Tail Waggin’ Tutors program are just some of the plans that new director Carol Donahue has for the Village Library of Morgantown.

“We are hoping to revitalize, to bring people back to the library, bring kids in and young people and their families,” said Donahue, who started her new position on March 1. She replaces Maria Gerasklis-Long, who is now the

director of the Wernersville Public Library.

“I am hoping by summer we have a number of those programs in place, but what we need is volunteers to help support those clubs, and we are always looking for board members,” said Donahue. “People can call in and talk to me to see if they are interested in helping.”

She noted that the library has already obtained board games for patrons to borrow. “We purchased a lot of board games not only for us to have a club, but also for families to check out,” said Donahue. “Families can come to the library not only for books or movies but to find

things to do to help them spend time together.”

A teacher by trade, Donahue graduated from the Valley Forge Christian College in Phoenixville, and she completed her student-teaching assignment at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown.

“I went to school to be a teacher, and I taught for eight years at West-Mont Christian Academy before starting a family,” she noted. Prior to being named director,

Donahue had a long relationship with the library. “I started coming to the library about 18 years ago with my kids. Then, I joined the Friends group and also served on the board for six years,” she said. “In 2019, I started working as a library aide. COVID shut the library down, and then I was on staff, but not working.”

Since her children were homeschooled, Donahue used the library as a place to supplement their learning. “Pam (Mohl, children’s

Honey Brook Women’s Club distributes donations

The Honey Brook Women’s Club recently distributed donations to local community service organizations. This year, thanks to successful fundraisers and financial support from the public, the club presented each recipient with $500, an increase from last year’s $100 donations.

During a meeting held on May 8 at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, the gifts were presented to the Honey Brook Community Library, represented by library director Jennifer Spade; the Honey Brook Food Pantry, represented by food pantry volunteers Becky Zeeger and Bridget Lillis; the Honey Brook Fire Company, represented by fire company

American Legion Riders to host annual bike show

The Morgantown American Legion Riders will present their 12th annual bike show, featuring a display of motorcycles of all makes and models, on Saturday, June 1, beginning at noon. The event, which will take place at Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537, 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown, is free to spectators.

In addition to the motorcycles, the event will feature food trucks, an outdoor beer garden and live

music. Five bands will be featured, including Jam, an acoustic duet; Chowderhead, an ’80s rock band; Drivetrain, which will perform country music; and rock bands Outrage and Shaken. All the bands have agreed to donate their time. Motorcycle owners who choose to participate will be asked to pay a registration fee, with proceeds donated to local veterans’ organizations. Trophies will be awarded in various categories, such as stock, custom, trike, tour stock, tour custom, antique and side car. Another motorcycle club, the

president Mike Hartz; Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS, represented by Victoria Motter; and the Honey Brook Youth Center and Steeple to People Ministries, represented by Kyle Esh.

After the check presentation, each of the recipients was given an opportunity to speak about his or her nonprofit, including the impact of the organization in the community.

The club holds the check presentation ceremony annually. “We had some money left over from last year and we also had a good year,” noted club president Lynn Klumpp, referring to the increase in grant monies. She added that this year’s scholarship to a Twin Valley High School graduating senior will also increase from $500 to $1,000.

Club fundraisers included selling food at the Harmony Day celebration last September and the annual tea held at the church. This year’s event was a St. Patrick’s Day tea on March 17.

During the Honey Brook Lions Club Breakfast with Santa, Honey Brook Women’s Club members staff a children’s Christmas store, which offers affordable shopping for youngsters who want to buy gifts for their parents and other family members.

“It’s reasonably priced for the kids to shop; they can shop for a couple of dollars,” said Klumpp. “The kids pick out the gifts out, and we wrap them.” She added that visiting families also provided donations to the women’s club after shopping.

Community service projects held during the year include providing snacks for children who participate in the Honey Brook

Lions Club Halloween Parade and distributing homemade Christmas cookies to homebound individuals during the month of December. The club also provides meals to the Honey Brook Youth Center and donated a gift basket to the Honey Brook Community Library Beef and Brew event on April 12. “We attend that event as a club to support the library,” Klumpp added.

Klumpp pointed out that the annual grant program has grown as community needs increase. “We have been (donating) for years. It used to be just the library, the fire company and the ambulance and Steeple to People. As the food bank came along, we added that and then the youth center,” she noted.

Klumpp added that attendees to the check distribution enjoy learning about the activities of other local nonprofit organizations. For example, the library has just begun an expansion project, and the fire company is looking to purchase a ladder truck. “Everyone gets to see the people behind the organizations,” Klumpp stated. “It’s interesting to see.”

The Honey Brook Women’s Club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. from September through June, with the last meeting being an installation dinner for new club officers.

Club members pay annual dues to participate. New members are welcome. For more information, women may join the “Honey Brook Women’s Club” group on Facebook.

Gladiolus Farm

New resource box includes nonperishables, books and more

People in need of free food and toiletries or even a book to read are invited to visit the sharing box that was recently installed at the Birdsboro campus of Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church.

The box is currently filled with basic dry and canned goods, including cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned vegetables and soup, as well as health and beauty aids and books for people of all ages. Once a refrigeration unit is

installed, people will also have a choice of frozen food and farmfresh chicken eggs.

“It is open 24/7, and you can come whenever you want,” said Lynnette Hess, MCC Birdsboro campus director, noting that the plywood shed was built by church members. “We all came together and loaded it up (with food and books).”

The structure has been dubbed the MCC Give and Take Community Resource Box because it contains items other than food and because community members are also invited to donate food and books.

Additionally, if the box is not stocked or specific items are needed, visitors can write down what they need on a poster located inside the pantry door. “There is a sign-up sheet so that if people need something specific like socks, diapers, milk or cotton swabs, they can just let us know,” said Hess, adding that her phone number is provided on the sheet as well as that of Anna Kirleis, pantry coordinator.

Hess said that the idea to have a free sharing box was in response to Facebook posts, where local people often share their needs. “Someone posted, ‘I just need some groceries until Thursday,’ and people within the community started responding (with offers of food),” noted Hess. “The community really supports the community here in Birdsboro. We are a community of generosity. It’s phenomenal. We wanted to be part of that and be part of that support.”

Future plans call for the box to be painted neon green, so it is highly visible. Church members will also create a banner that will be attached to the side of the box so that people can see it from the road.

The public is also welcome to attend Sunday services at MCC Birdsboro, which are held at 4:30 p.m. A fellowship meal is offered at the church on the first Sunday of the month.

She said that while there are other local food sharing boxes, the MCC box will provide additional help to people in need. “We recognized a need of more than just the locations that are out now,” Hess noted. “We have (the food), and we want to share it.”

Hess added that providing food to the community is part of the church’s outreach. “Everything we do focuses around food. On June 1 we are having a pig roast from 4 to 6 p.m.,” she said, noting that Kona Ice will also be offered. “This is a free event for the community.”
