Strawberry Festival To Offer Fun For All

To officially kick off the summer season, the Brandywine Health Foundation (BHF) will present its 47th annual

Strawberry Festival on the grounds of Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health, 201 Reeceville Road, Coatesville. Festival dates and times are Thursday, May 30, from 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday,

May 31, from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, June 1, from noon to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, June 2, from noon to 6 p.m. A fireworks display will take place on May 31 at 9:45 p.m.

The event will feature an international food fair, carnival rides, live music and magic shows, a mechanical bull ride, a rock wall, a zip line, a vendor fair and more. The festival’s popular See Strawberry Festival pg 7

Margaret’s mother, Meghan, explained that she and her daughter learned about the contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. “My daughter loves the Farm Show, and we go to the Farm Show every year and she always sees these girls (who are county agriculture queens), talks to them and she wanted to be involved,” Meghan said.

The Chester County Assembly 1873 Knights of Columbus will sponsor the eighth annual John Mattis Memorial Car Show on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville. The event is free and open to the public. Plenty of free parking will be available, and DJ Bert will provide music.

The show is named for John Mattis, a member of the Chester County Assembly 1873 Knights of Columbus who owned an auto body shop in Honey Brook and was the chairman of the assemby’s first car show. After he passed away in 2010, his fellow Knights of Columbus renamed their annual car show in his honor.

“Last year we registered over 60 cars for the show,” said current car show chairman Jim Smith, a member of Chester County Assembly 1873 Knights of Columbus. He noted that all

makes and models are welcome, including antiques, classics, street rods, Corvettes, motorcycles, trucks and imports. Local car clubs are welcome.

Dash plaques will be given to the first 25 cars to register. To register, readers may contact Smith at 610-733-2310 or jimjsmith@comcast.net. Same-day registrations will be accepted beginning at 8:30 a.m. In lieu of a registration fee, gift cards for a suggested amount from local department stores will be collected from vehicle owners.

Cars will be judged in various categories, and one will be chosen as Best of Show. “Last year, a 1955 Chevy 210 took the Best in Show prize and a 1929 Packard coupe won the Antique Pre-1992 category,” Smith noted.

All proceeds from the show will benefit veterans. Chester County Assembly 1873 supports various programs at the Coatesville VA Medical Center, including “Wrapping Presence” for veterans in the Contemporary Living Center. As part of

this annual effort, the Knights of Columbus group sets up a makeshift store where veterans can shop for gifts for their loved ones at no cost. Gift cards donated at the car show will be used to purchase gifts.

The Knights also recently sponsored a luncheon for two dozen women veterans at a local restaurant and held a winter carnival in March in the Great Hall at the VA. At this event, the Knights and other organizations set up booths where veterans could play games and win prizes.

Additionally, the Knights are contributing to the new VA Welcome Home Carts program, which provides necessities to veterans who are placed in offsite housing. “With Welcome Home Carts, you get a collapsible shopping cart and it is filled with household items when they leave the center,” Smith explained, noting that the carts contain two sets of bath towels and hand towels, along with washcloths, toilet tissue, paper towels, cleaning supplies and more. “The cart

The choir, with more than 20 members from southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, performs throughout the tri-state region at various venues and events such as concert series performances, weddings, religious services, private parties and special events. It also performs at regional flute fairs and flute society events and conventions.

Cyber FastTrack Program Posted A national cybersecurity program, Cyber FastTrack, designed specifically for undergraduate and graduate students, has been launched by 27 states to encourage more young people to discover their talent and pursue careers in cybersecurity. Participants need to be at least 18 years old and be registered at a regionally accredited community college, four-year college or graduate school to qualify. The program awards top-scoring participants with scholarships to advanced cybersecurity courses, with a total prize value of up to $2.5 million.

Pennsylvania is among the 27 states that have registered participation. The program is delivered online so that students can complete it alongside their other studies and from anywhere in the country.

The program consists of three stages, CyberStart Assess, CyberStart Game, and CyberStart Essentials. Each stage features a series of digital challenges that are designed to introduce participants to important concepts in the field of cybersecurity.

When registered, participants will be sent a link to the first stage, CyberStart Assess, which consists of a series of questions that measure problemsolving skills and the potential for a career in cybersecurity. The second stage, CyberStart Game, involves tackling more than 200 real-world challenges, including identifying security flaws and uncovering a cyber criminal’s digital trail. Finally, CyberStart Essentials will build on the foundational skills already learned, while working through exercises, quizzes, and interactive labs.

The Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference recently honored a working single mom who has overcome adversity and is active in her community. Angela Moyer of Coatesville is the winner of this year’s Belinda R. Harrison Award, announced on April 27 at the Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference at Henderson High School in West Chester.

The conference’s theme was “Great Job, Mom!” All single mothers were invited to attend free of charge.

Moyer was nominated by her peers, who say she is an impressive single mom who has provided not only for her family, but also for those in her community.

When Moyer found herself and her two children unstably housed a few years ago, she connected with a Chester County agency to obtain affordable housing,

She is working with Chester County Food Bank to promote the collection of fresh fruits and vegetables to donate to local food banks,” Meghan explained. “She already collected carrots, onions, potatoes and peppers - items that will last more than few days in the refrigerator - and we donated them to the Phoenixville Community Center.”

Margaret will now compete at the Pennsylvania Miss United States Agriculture Pageant in September at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Contestants will compete based on their age in various categories.

Since her crowning, Margaret has volunteered at a local Easter egg hunt and at the Down to Earn Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) facility in Downingtown. “We helped them with their salad exchange (for CSA members),” said Margaret.

Adult black bears usually weigh about 200 pounds, but males can be as much as 600 pounds or more. They measure about three feet high when on all fours or about five to seven feet tall when standing upright. They may live up to 25 years in the wild, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Bears are usually dormant in winter, remaining in their dens, which can be rock caverns; excavated holes beneath shrubs, trees, or deadfalls; hollow trees; or nests built on the ground.

“There will be good music and fellowship to follow,” said Vickie Kissinger, director of the choir and the bell choir at St. John Center Lutheran Church, 599 Reading Road, East Earl.

Kissinger was referring to this year’s Music Sunday, a musical event that will include featured soloist Dr. Jun Chon, a duet between Chon and Kissinger, and organ, choir, and bell choir selections. The event will be followed by a fellowship meal.

According to Kissinger, all are welcome at the annual special service, which will be held on Sunday, June 2, at 10:15 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Visitors will be invited to take part in the potluck fellowship meal that will follow the service. Strawberries with vanilla ice cream will be served for dessert.

In Pennsylvania, bears mate primarily from early June to midJuly, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Female bears give birth in January to litters of one to five cubs. The newborn cubs are blind, toothless, and covered with short, fine hair.

Putting Safety First When Driving With Pets In The Car Many people can recognize the familiar image of a car traveling down the road with the head of a seemingly happy dog hanging out from the front passenger seat.

Traveling in such a way may seem harmless, but doing so can be detrimental to both pets and their owners.

According to Paws to Click, a community that aims to inspire pet owners to travel responsibly with their pets, allowing pets to travel in cars without employing a harness poses a significant threat to everyone in the car. The group notes that an unrestrained 75-pound dog will exert about 2,250 pounds of force in a crash in which the car is traveling at just 30 miles per hour. Such force can injure others in the car as well as the pet. In addition, unrestrained pets may challenge first responders in an effort to protect their owners after an accident has taken place.

She explained that in the final hours before the festival begins, Senior Circle volunteers at Brandywine Hospital will begin capping fresh strawberries for the strawberry shortcake served at the festival. “The shortcake is topped with vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries and whipped cream,” Collins said.

Collins and the festival volunteer organizing committee, led by Randy Scott of Coatesville and Carlyle Holling (also known as the Strawberry Lady) of Chester Springs, work throughout the year to plan the event. “The Strawberry

Festival started in 1972 at the former Coatesville Hospital on Strode Avenue and has always been held on the (hospital) grounds,” Collins pointed out. “The festival has grown into the fun-filled four-day event that it is today. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 people attend over the four days.”

Parking will be available adjacent to the festival grounds. It is free to enter the festival, but there will be a nominal donation to park collected by the Thorndale Fire Company.

A free shuttle service will be offered from 5 to 11 p.m. on May 31 and June 1 from Kmart, 3205 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale.

Unless there is a threat of high winds and lightning, the festival is a rain-or-shine event.

On May 30, the festival will begin at 5 p.m. with wristband night in the Majestic Midway.

Those who purchase a wristband will be offered unlimited amusement rides that evening. Discounted ride tickets will also be sold on June 1 and 2 to be used from noon to 2 p.m. on the day of purchase.

For youngsters age 6 and under who visit the festival, Straw berryland will again return, offering moon bounces, an inflatable obstacle course and inflatable slides.

Purchasing a wristband will allow children to bounce and play all day. There will be appearances by well-known children’s characters.

On June 2, the Strawberriest Kid Contest will begin at 2 p.m.

Parents may bring their child up to age 5 dressed in a strawberry outfit. Prizes will be awarded.

“New to the festival this year will be a second dining tent located near the vendor area on the pavement. This will better accommodate handicapped individuals,” noted Strawberry Festival event coordinator Carol Collins, a BHF staff member. “The Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health will have a free rock wall (throughout the event) and also will be hosting a dance contest on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. The Chester County Food Bank will have a cooking demonstration on Saturday, and the Honey

This despite the fact that American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) advises all pet owners to properly restrain their pets before departing on a car trip, no matter how short or long that trip is expected to be.

In addition to properly restraining pets on car trips, pet owners can take several other steps to ensure the safety of their pets when riding in cars: · Don’t take pets along on car trips unless it is absolutely necessary. While it can be fun to take a pet with you, the AVMF advises pet owners to leave their pets home when possible. Pet owners whose pets are exhibiting signs of anxiety should try to address the anxiety so pets are comfortable at home alone. · Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes.

The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) recently announced the appointment of Jeremy Brubaker and Lyn Carlson to the advisory board.

A graduate of Elizabethtown College and Eastern University, Brubaker holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in business administration, respectively. Brubaker works for Technology Solutions Associates in Lancaster. He currently resides in Elizabethtown.

Brubaker’s eldest daughter sings in Carol Choir. Along with his wife, Laura, and three young children, Brubaker attends Rossmere Mennonite Church, where he serves on the leadership team.

Carlson directs the Learning Support Program and teaches French at Lancaster Mennonite High School. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern University in elementary, special, and early childhood education and in multicultural education with a concentration in English as a Second Language.

Carlson served more than a decade on the Youth Committee of the Atlantic Coast Conference of the Mennonite Church and a year on the board of directors for Eastern Mennonite Missions. She has taken part in short-term mission trips to France and Lithuania and led a student exchange group to France last summer.

Since her high school days at Fairview Christian School in Reading and her post-high school days at Rosedale Bible College, Carlson has been involved in some form of music, including singing in choirs, quartets, and duets or playing guitar on worship teams.

Carlson’s husband, Jon, is lead pastor at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, and together they have three young children, two of whom sing in Carol Choir and one who plans to join Prelude Music next year.

The mission of MCCL is training children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The choir’s repertoire reflects the musical diversity of the church around the world and through time. MCCL is open to children from all church backgrounds and is a provided as a program of Lancaster Mennonite School as a service to the community.

Harold Kilhefner will bring his nearly 20-year-old red Audi TT to the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, for the 37th annual Antique and Classic Car Show to be held there on Sunday, June 2, beginning with car registration at 8 a.m. The car will be entered in class 16, one of 17 classes that are sponsored by local businesses. “Class 16 is for cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old,” explained Kilhefner. “It’s a 2001, and it’s unique and different, which makes it perfect for a class like that.”

The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1994. Categories for street rods and street machines are included, along with a couple classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins, and Mustangs.

Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and farm tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 1985 to 2019. Class 17 is for AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) Seniors. “(This class is) for

Heritage Day Moves Across Campus When Fairmount holds its 15th annual Heritage Day on Saturday, June 1, the change from the last event will be obvious to attendees. “We are across the street this year,” explained Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount. Fairmount will hold the 2019 Heritage Day celebration at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, rather than at the former location because that ground is now the site of the 45-unit Wheat Ridge apartment building, which is still under construction.

Heritage Day, which will be held rain or shine, pays homage to the things of yesteryear, including vintage farm equipment and antique cars and tractors. The event will feature horse and buggy rides, a petting zoo, craft demonstrations, and plenty of food. The day will begin at 6:30 a.m. with a breakfast of eggs, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, and orange juice. Homemade doughnuts will also be available. Heritage Day will conclude at 3 p.m.

Area history, shared by wellknown storytellers, is always an important part of the event. For 2019, three storytellers will appear in the Speakers Tent. Henry Benner will talk about “Early Farming Methods in Lancaster County” at 9 a.m. Alvin Hoover will talk about “Communion Practices: Past and Present” at 10 a.m., and Ken Sensenig will talk about “Casting Lots, for Good and for Ill” at 1:45 p.m.

More local history will be presented in an exhibit at the Muddy

Creek Farm Library, located on the Fairmount campus. The display tells the story of the migration of the Palatinate Mennonites who arrived in the Pequea region of Lancaster County in 1710.

Self-guided tours will be available until 3:45 p.m.

Farm machinery, including antique balers and hit-and-miss engines, will be demonstrated during Heritage Day. The dynamometer, which measures the accuracy of horsepower, will be on-site again this year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The device will be available to test tractors. The annual tractor procession will be held at about 2:30 p.m.

The silent auction, which is overseen by Kent and Rita Richard, will end at noon in the Speakers Tent. Passage noted that last year’s auction included about 100 items.

Flavors associated with Lancaster County are traditionally part of Heritage Day. Passage noted that more than 100 fresh strawberry pies will be made for the event. Pork barbecue sandwiches, soft pretzels, fresh-cut french fries, and ice cream made with hit-and-miss engines will also be among the fare available for purchase.

Heritage Day raises money for the Sharing Fund to help support Fairmount residents who have exhausted their financial resources. Passage said that he hopes this year’s event will raise more than $25,000 for the fund.

Although Heritage Day does raise money for the Sharing Fund, Passage emphasized that

the event is more about bringing area residents together to remember and appreciate the past and socialize. “This is more of a community fellowship day (than a fundraiser),” said Passage. “It’s lots of friends and family.”

Fairmount, formerly Fairmount Homes, is a ministry that

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a program for local residents, organizations, civic groups, and businesses to be part of the solution. Its statewide adoption program is an opportunity for locals to adopt and care for municipal roads, parks, neighborhood blocks, greenways, waterways, and trails.

According to Keep America Beautiful’s 2009 National Visible Litter Survey and Litter Cost Study, litter cleanup costs the U.S. more than an estimated $11.5 billion each year, with municipalities spending more than $790 million and counties spending $185 million each year.

The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful adoption program helps mitigate the costs associated with cleaning up by encouraging local residents to take ownership of their communities.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the groups or individuals who have adopted the road or area and seeks the support of the local municipalities to provide the sign post, install the sign, and provide trash disposal options as needed.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup of PA will run through Friday, May 31. Free bags, gloves, and vests are available for cleanup volunteers through a partnership with PennDOT and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.

Organization Seeks Volunteers

“I believe most of the problems girls have stem from self-esteem (issues) because they don’t like something about themselves, so they bully someone else. We can change their perception. They need to accept who they are so they can accept others,” stated Angela White when announcing the formation of a new nonprofit organization, Wonderfully Me Inc. The goal of the organization, White said, is to help girls ages 8 to 14 begin “embracing their uniqueness, exploring life’s possibilities and making positive life choices while growing into womanhood.”

Wonderfully Me life skills meetings, which are free and open to all girls who reside in Chester County, will begin in the fall at East Ward Elementary School in Downingtown. The first meeting will be on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, and meetings will continue monthly through June 2020.

In preparation for the monthly workshops, White is currently seeking volunteers from the community to help with all aspects of the new nonprofit. “We need

She said there will be an emphasis on dealing with bullying. “(Previously) there was bullying and girls being picked on because of their clothing (or appearance), but today because of social media it gets so mean,” White said. “I feel the earlier that we try to reach these girls when these challenges come up, the better they will be able to make the right choices.”

people interested in volunteering in different capacities - being a mentor, helping me with fundraising, grant writing and marketing. I also need (additional) board members,” White stated. “Volunteer (opportunities) encompass the whole gamut.”

White noted that volunteers who will be directly helping with the girls must have mandatory child abuse background clearance.

White said she developed the idea to form the girls’ empowerment group about two years ago.

Since that time, she came up with the name of the organization and created a Facebook page and website. She also helped design the organization’s logo, a colorful butterfly with a silhouette of a girl in the center as the butterfly’s body. “I wanted the (logo) to depict a girl’s transformation into a woman (symbolized by) the butterfly,” she said.

White also held a meeting on May 28 at the Chester County Library in Exton to help educate the public about the organization and to seek volunteers.

White said she does not have daughters, but she learned about girls’ issues through her job, through her role as the aunt to several nieces and through her volunteer work at Coatesville Kids to College and at ChesPenn
