We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

We observed Mother’s Day earlier this month, during which we celebrated all moms, grandmoms, stepmoms and aunts - all the women who have contributed positively to our lives. But there is another type of mom who should be recognized as well - pet moms.

Mothers of dogs and cats keep our four-legged friends well fed, safe and properly exercised. Being a dog or cat mom requires a lot of energy. There are messes to clean up; dog walks at all hours of the day and night; and sometimes trips to multiple stores to find their favorite toys, which often get destroyed and have to be repurchased.

Being a mom to a dog or cat who is frightened of loud noises is also a challenge. My two dogs are terribly afraid when it comes to thunder or fireworks on the Fourth of July. That holiday has now become a time for snuggling both of them under a soft blanket to try to calm their fears.

Being a pet mom is a lot of responsibility, like taking them to the vet when they are sick, and it requires a bit of patience, especially when dogs bark at the mailman, a squirrel or even a leaf blowing by the window.

CREEKSIDE FOODS

Pets sleep in our beds leaving little to no room for us, accompany us to the bathroom and beg for food while we are eating until we have no choice but to give in. And, if they fall asleep in our laps, we don’t dare to stand up!

But the rewards are infinite. Pets provide us unconditional love and companionship. They seem to sense when we are sad or have anxiety, and they comfort us. They are always happy to see us when we get home, and we are just as happy when we see them.

Dogs, especially, get us outside and active, and we meet other dog parents along the way. For example, I know every dog in our neighborhood - Agnes, Mia, Kolby, Milly and Asher - but I would be hardpressed to name their owners.

Dogs and cats also provide a nonstop source of humor, like when they have the zoomies, roll around playing, chase balls, pretend bite us or become drama queens when getting their nails trimmed.

Many pet owners make individual Facebook pages for their cat or dog. Chester County’s own Ammo the Dachshund, who sadly passed away at the age of 16 last November, has his own page, which now features the family’s new dachshund, named Flip. Flip has big shoes to fill, since Ammo had followers not only from the United States, but from all over the world.

Another one of my favorite Facebook dogs is Morty the Misfit, a black Chihuahua. Morty has only one eye and many disabilities, but that doesn’t stop him from prancing around, making little clicking noises on the hardwood floors. Seeing Morty walking in style wearing all his different outfits brings a smile to my face every day. Check out Morty

The audience can expect to hear cover songs by many popular bands. “It will all be covers - the feel-good type of music - standards that people know and love from Kool & the Gang to James Brown to the Rolling Stones,” said Efrem. “We have a big variety of music.”

Efrem pointed out that the band gets its name from its charismatic and spirited performances. “We are a high-energy band, and we take things to the third power,” he said. “(The

name) comes from the bass player, the original founder of this band. We have been together 12 to 15 years.”

Efrem describes 3rd Power Family Soul as an interactive dance band. “We are a very engaging band. We like crowd participation. Once you come to see us, you are part of the 3rd Power Soul’s family,” he said. “We keep it clean and danceable. Ninety percent of the time people get up and dance.”

The band members are looking forward to playing in Honey Brook for the first time. “Every new venue for us is exciting,”

Efrem said. “If people come, it’s up to us to deliver excellence. Let’s have some fun. I think it will be great.”

New program aims to help domestic abuse victims

Golf outing from

Conte explained that the golf outing did not take place for several years but was held again in 2024. “We stopped (having the outing) for three or four years, and we resurrected it last year, so this is our second ‘re-annual’ event,” he said, noting that 33 teams completed in last year’s outing. “It’s a nice course - not too difficult. People can be competitive there.”

The beneficiary of the fundraiser, St. Francis Home in Reading, is a nonprofit faith-based facility that offers hospice care to people with a terminal illness, regardless of their ability to pay.

The charity was selected by the Rev. Monsignor Edward Domin, former Church of St. Benedict pastor.

“The previous pastor was a chaplain (at St. Francis Home),” Conte noted. “We discussed the charity with him last year and he selected the hospice, which we thought would be a good choice.”

The golf outing is just one of the several activities presented each year by the Knights of Columbus, which is led by Grand Knight Michael Maiers Sr. The group holds fundraisers, like designer bag bingo and Lenten Fish Frys, with all proceeds donated to local charities. The Knights also offer an annual scholarship to students attend -

ing La Salle Academy and Berks Catholic High School.

From October 2024 through March, the Knights completed various fraternal projects, including presenting a Halloween Trunk or Treat, coordinating the parish Christmas bazaar, supplying food and beverages to firefighters battling the Neversink Mountain fire last November and providing support to Hurricane Helene disaster relief efforts in North Carolina.

The Church of St. Benedict presents a Hospitality Sunday breakfast for the congregation on the first Sunday of each month. For June 1, the Knights of Columbus will host the event and provide the breakfast food.

“The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefit organization founded and focused on cornerstones. The cornerstones are charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism,” Conte explained, noting that members must be at least 18 years of age and practicing Catholics. “We help out at church events. We ask people to volunteer at least one or two events a year.”

Educational seminar planned

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office will hold a seminar, Think Before You Post, on Friday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 W. Market St., West Chester.

The seminar will educate youths on the impact of their online behavior and equip attendees with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the internet responsibly.

This year’s seminar will feature speakers from the Chester County

Sheriff’s Office, the county’s District Attorney’s Office, and the Chester County Department of Emergency Services. They will share stories, insight, and guidance on the potential long-term consequences of posting certain types of content. The seminar is free and open to students, families, teachers, and other community members, and attendees can register at www .chesco.org/5712/Think-Before -You-Post. The seminar will also be accessible virtually.

is female and weighs 15 pounds.

“They were found together as strays,” McManus said. “We are trying to get them in a home together. They are very bonded.”

Also at the event with her foster mom Saira Ahmad was Bella, age 14, a female Yorkie/poodle mix.

“Because of her age, we really hope someone will take care of her in her golden years,” said McManus. “She doesn’t ask for much. She is as happy as can be.”

In addition to meeting with the adoptable dogs and learning about the pet rescue, attendees were able to visit the horses and shop at the Ryerss gift shop, which was open for the day.

Community members are welcome to visit the horses at Ryerss Farm, 1710 Ridge Road, Pottstown, daily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. To learn more, visit www.ryerssfarm.org.

All 4 Paws is celebrating its 16th year of operation this month. The rescue, founded in May of 2009 by Kristen Geddes, has saved more than 16,000 animals since its formation.

All 4 Paws started as a rescue for special needs animals, inducing hospice cases and senior pets. The effort expanded over the years to welcome pets from kill shelters and commercial breeding facilities.

“Some of the dogs we take from ACCT Philly because they run out of kennel space. We pull who we can to alleviate that and prevent loss of life,” said McManus. “Some come from rescue partners in South Carolina. We can place them a little faster than others.”

Those who would like to adopt a pet are asked to complete an application and provide veterinary references and personal references. If there is already a dog or cat in the home, the pets must meet to see how they interact.

“We make sure that everything we can do that makes it a safe home is done,” said McManus. “With an adoption, we typically require meet-and-greets before we send a dog home to make sure there is no warning signs. Our goal is to adopt to their forever family the first time around.”

to complete an adoption or foster application, visit www .all4pawsrescue.com. More information about the meet-and-greet events is available at www.face book.com/all4pawsrescue. Those with questions may email info@ all4pawsrescue.com.

“We try to get an idea of what (adopters) are looking for,” added Murray. “Since adoption applications are good for a year, if they come across a dog they want a month from now, they are still approved.”

Since the program is foster-based, it is especially in need of people willing to give a temporary home to a cat or dog until a permanent home can be found. While the rescue maintains a business office in Malvern, there is not a physical shelter where people can meet dogs.

“We always need fosters,” said McManus. “Our limitations for the dogs we can help are our adopters and our fosters.”

In addition to fosters and adopters, All 4 Paws is in need of volunteers to work at meet-andgreet events. During the events, prospective adopters can meet adoptable pets and learn about the adoption process. “We go all over throughout the community. We go to First Fridays in Phoenixville and to Pickering Valley Feed Store (in Exton) and Yappy Hour in West Chester,” McManus noted. “Sometimes with fosters’ schedules, they can’t come to an event, but we still want to get the dogs the exposure, so we have volunteers who specifically handle dogs at an event. Anyone who loves dogs is welcome (to volunteer).”

All pets available for adoption by All 4 Paws Rescue are microchipped, spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives.

Sadly, our pets are with us for such a short time, and it is heartbreaking to lose one, but as much as it hurts, there are plenty of dogs and cats at area rescues waiting for their forever homes. Some people actually believe that when their pet dies, he or she “sends” them another animal to love.

The key is to enjoy every moment you spend with your

cat or dog. Make time to pet or brush them. Make sure they get the proper vet care. Walk on different paths. Let them have an extra treat (or two). Keep their water bowls filled with fresh clean water. Enjoy their zoomies and their bathroom stalking and forgive them for chewing up your favorite shoe. And if they need it, snuggle with them under a soft blanket and remember to never stand up if they fall asleep in your lap.
