Fourth-Graders Enjoy Field Trip, Meet Future Friends By Francine Fulton
A group of 266 enthusiastic students eager to learn met with volunteers who were ready to share their knowledge about the environment during a field trip that included all fourth-grade classes from the Twin Valley School District. The event, held on May 9 at French Creek State Park, featured 25 educational stations ranging from orienteering and geocaching to tree identification and a nature scavenger hunt. Participating students were from the Twin Valley Elementary Center (TVEC), the Honey Brook Elementary Center (HBEC) and the Robeson Elementary Center (REC). “This was a districtwide trip that served two purposes,” explained TVEC teacher Sue Sanger. “Students in fourth grade got to meet each other before entering middle school next year. In addition, students were educated on a variety of environ-
mental topics, while having fun.” According to Sanger, the students were given a course selection packet and were invited to choose topics based on their interests. Each student took part in four 40-minute sessions. Students traveled from station to station, where programs were led by volunteer station masters, including district teachers, environmental education professionals and parent volunteers. Physical education teachers Heather McHugh (TVEC), Greg Linsky (HBEC) and Courtney Evans (REC) led an outdoor fitness and team building program. TVEC principal Craig Sell led a salamander hunt, while Mary Ann Razzano, retired school nurse, led a class called “Basic First Aid for the Outdoor Adventure.” Riley Davenport and Shannon Lambert, interns at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, presented a program about bird adaptations.
