Ken Biles, armaments scholar and experienced re-enactor, will present “Technological Developments at the Springfield Armory 1795-1968” on Sunday, May 19. Sponsored by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace, the free program will begin at 2 p.m. in the conference room at Hopewell Furnace, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. Using his private collection of period artifacts, Biles will demonstrate the extraordinary advances in technology that took place at Springfield Armory from its beginnings in 1795 to its final closing in 1968. (EWC) will take part in a Warwick Furnace hike of 2 to 3 miles on Sunday, May 26. Community members are welcome to participate. The outing will be a road walk in a valley in Chester County near Warwick County Park. Participants will see the newly uncovered stonework of the 18th-century furnace. EWC members will meet at 1:30 p.m. at Warwick County Park to carpool to the site, as parking on-site is very limited. The GPS address for the park is 51 County Park Road, Pottstown. Barbecue Competition

Members of the East Brandywine Baptist Church (EBBC) needlework group not only enjoy knitting and crocheting, conversation and snacks during their monthly meetings, they also create items - such as lap robes, scarves and knitted hats - that are donated to local organizations. The ladies’ group meets on the first Friday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon in the church foyer. Any woman may join the group, whether or not she is a member of the church. No sewing experience is needed. “ We encourage visitors and we encourage anyone from the community (to attend),” said group member Joyce Arters, noting that instruction will be provided. “Ladies can show up and work on a project, and we will help them learn.” “For experienced (stitchers), we help See Needlework Group pg 3

Faith Communities Unite For A Day Of Service

Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, will hold coed volleyball each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. through Sept. 9. Participation will be free through June 3. Following that date, participation will be by donation, which will benefit local charities. Women’s-only volleyball will be held the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Sept. 18, free of charge. Group Creates Handmade Items For Others TVFD To Host
The Twin Valley Fire Department (TVFD) will host the third annual Twin Valley Fire and Smoke Barbecue Competition on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, at Friendship Park, 3287 North St., Morgantown. The event will feature a wing contest between local fire departments as well as a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS)-sanctioned competition between some of the best professional barbecue cooks in the Mid-Atlantic region. The event will begin on May 17 with the First Responders People’s Choice Wing Competition at 6 p.m. As part of the event, local teams will prepare their best wings for the competition. TVEC Students Raise Trout In The Classroom

As part of the second annual Day of Hope, a day of service sponsored by the Interfaith Action Community (IAC), people from various churches and faith communities united to complete service projects in the community on May 4. More than 60 volunteers were grouped into eight different interfaith work teams. The group represented the IAC membership faith organizations, including various Christian See Day Of Hope pg 6
Twin Valley Elementary Center (TVEC) fourth-graders took learning outside the classroom as they traveled to Hay Creek in Robeson Township on April 30 to release the brook trout fingerlings that they had been raising as part of the Pennsylvania Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program. The Tulpehocken Branch of Trout Unlimited (TU) partnered with TVEC to implement the program in fourth grade, and TU members were on hand to help See Trout pg 11
