A Special Connection

Aconnection made within the Alzheimer’s Association has sparked a change in an annual local fundraiser.

Lynn Cronomiz has held annual “Paint the Town Purple” fundraiser events for half a decade, taking different forms, like a 5K run or selling cookbooks. However, she found that the fundraiser’s numbers were not going up.

“I just couldn’t seem to grow the amount of runners that I was attracting,” she said. “It’s very hard with 5Ks, because they’re all over, and I just couldn’t seem to grow it, so I thought about our great auto mall and how in our community it seems like a lot of people like car shows.”

Morgantown. The rain date is Saturday, June 6.

This year’s fundraiser will be known as the Paint the Town Purple Car Show, to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road,

Pregnancy Support Group Set for

Over a quarter of reported pregnancies end in some sort of loss.

Lily New and the Village Library of Morgantown feel that support is vital to recovering from that loss. That’s why Lily and her husband, Thomas, started their second pregnancy support group at the library, 207 Walnut St., Morgantown.

After a successful first year, Anchored Ministries is bringing its “Food Truck Takeover” event back to Twin Valley High School on Saturday, May 16, from 3 to 8 p.m.

Last year, the ministry held its inaugural event that was designed to provide family fun while educating people about the nonprofit organization, which provides assistance to those in need. Nearly 800 people attended the takeover.

“We just really didn’t know how many people would come,” said Donna Larson, a board member

Betty was originally a gift from Fox-Lewis’ grandfather, who was lost to Alzheimer’s. Fox-Lewis instantly bonded with Cronomiz,

A connection made by the executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Delaware Valley chapter ignited the change. The director introduced Cronomiz to Samantha Fox-Lewis, a New Jersey resident who has a car named “Betty” that travels to shows in the area.

The group, titled the “Sacred In-Between,” will cover a multitude of forms of loss, including miscarriages, stillbirths, infertility and other forms of early pregnancy loss.

“It’s the in-between of the heavy grief of losing your child and then the hope that it’s not always going to be so heavy,” Lily New said. “Having support with a community really helps that.”

The group held its inaugural meeting from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on May 11 in the library’s community room and will continue to meet the fourth Monday of every month at the same time. Due to the sensitive nature of conversation, no children are permitted.

New shared that her and her husband have lost two babies, one through miscarriage and another through stillbirth. Joining a support group helped the couple recover from their losses, which is what inspired them to start the groups of their own.

“It’s something that’s really close to my heart,” she said. “(The support group) has blessed my husband and I a lot ... we want to help parents just normalize their grief and be able to talk about

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the return of the Healing the Planet Grant Program. The program, funded by Giant, aims to invest in native plantings across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. A total of $100,000 will be donated for native community plantings. The funding is available to tax-exempt organizations, including local groups, governments, and schools. Eligible projects must be shovel-ready and include native plantings and direct costs relating to planting.

healing-the-planet-2026/. Awardees will be announced in June.

This is the sixth year Giant has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past five years, more than $1.3 million has been awarded to 177 recipients for projects that connected people and families to green spaces; improved or helped protect local waterways and water resources; supported projects that addressed food waste prevention, reduction, and recovery; and promoted native tree planting initiatives.

at Anchored Ministries. “It exceeded our wildest expectations. We were dreaming maybe (300) or 400 people would come.”

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

Eligible expenses include plants native to Pennsylvania, equipment, educational signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest quantity of native plants. Up to $4,000 may be awarded to a project.

To apply by Thursday, May 21, at 4 p.m., visit www.keeppabeautiful.org/ grants-awards/grants/ healing-the-planet-grant/

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility, and respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., has more than 35 years of experience in organizing volunteer-driven community improvement events. About a dozen food trucks are scheduled to participate. Everything from burgers and fries to Mexican food, açaí bowls, salads, ice cream, barbecue and more will be available for purchase.

“I truly didn’t have any idea how much people love food trucks,” Larson said. “A lot of nonprofits have kind of more formal banquets ... this kind of suits our vibe and is just more of a unique or organic way to engage with the community.”

Basket giveaways will also return from last year, along with a new 50/50 drawing. Items in the baskets include Twin Valley Coffee, movie tickets, local restaurant gift cards and more. Larson said there will be about 20 baskets.

Returning from the previous year, there will be live music throughout the afternoon. This year, Philly-area natives Second Breakfast, an acoustic duo who specialize in rock, folk and blues music, will perform at the event.

Like last year, there will be various other activities available at the event. Students from Twin Valley’s National Honor Society will do face painting on kids for free. Vendors, including a florist, will also

have tables set up. Proceeds from donations received during the day will benefit Anchored Ministries. Among the ministry’s programs are its mobile clothing closet, which offers new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, and its prom boutiques, which helps local high-schoolers prepare for dances and get required clothing items.

“Last year, we distributed a little over 50,000 articles of clothing,” said Russ Williams, executive director of Anchored Ministries. “That equated to just shy of $500,000 worth of value that we were able to get back out into the community. The fundraising that we do will directly support getting articles of clothing out to people that need it.”

Twin Valley High School is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. The event will be held rain or shine.

For more information about Anchored Ministries, including the mobile clothing closet schedule, visit www.anchoredministries .org or www.facebook.com/ AnchoredMinistriesPA. Those with questions may email foodtruck@anchored ministries.org.

“We couldn’t do anything without the community,” Williams said. “It’s just a cool way to bless the community with just a fun event here in our hometown.”

at the Hopewell Furnace Visitor Center, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. The event is free of charge. Seating is limited. Graham will also be available to sign copies of his books, which may be purchased at the Visitor Center and at www .friendsofhopewellfurn.org.

Twin Valley High School recently honored its Rotary Students of the Month for April. The awards went to seniors Nathan Sedgwick and Sloane Wolfe.

Nathan has been a part of the baseball program all four years of high school, spending the last two years on the varsity squad. He has also been a member of the National Honor Society and the Technology Student Association. Nathan will attend Penn State University.

Sloane serves as president of the National Honor Society. She has worked with the American Civil Liberties Union in securing policies protecting student free speech, she has been recognized by the National Association of Student Councils as a National Distinguished Student Leader, and she serves as a regional representative and executive board member for the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils. In March, she was recognized as a United States Senate

Youth Program delegate, which allowed her to spend a week in Washington, D.C., and receive a $12,500 scholarship. She recently won the Berks’ Best Communications Award and a scholarship from the Polish American Heritage Foundation. Sloane is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and the International Thespian Society and is serving her second term as a state thespian officer. She was named an AP Scholar with Honor and a Coca-Cola Scholars Semifinalist, and the College Board honored her with the Rural and SmallTown Recognition Award. She also won the Roger Taylor Four-Way Test Rotary Speech Contest. Sloane serves as a legislative intern for Rep. Paul Friel and a national presenter for Students4Good. Sheriff’s Office Appoints Creighton as Captain

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office has announced the appointment of Kevin Creighton as captain. Drawing on his more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, he will serve in a command role supporting the Sheriff’s Office’s operational and administrative functions.

Creighton has come to the Sheriff’s Office following a distinguished career with the Pennsylvania State Police, where he mostly served as captain and director of operational training with the Bureau of Training and Education. In that role, he oversaw statewide training operations; supervised instructional staff across multiple facilities; and managed critical areas, including use-of-force review, emergency vehicle incident analysis, and personnel accountability. Throughout his career,

Creighton has held key leadership positions at every rank as he rose from a trooper to a corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. He has supervised large-scale patrol operations, led high-risk incident responses, and directed academy training programs responsible for developing and maintaining operational standards across the agency. He has also served on multiple policy and promotional committees, contributing to agency standards, curriculum development, and organizational governance. Creighton holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Temple University. He has been recognized by the Pennsylvania State Police commissioner for leadership and service during major operations, including national level-security events and critical incident responses.

Farm Bureau Urges Driver Caution on Rural Roads

YOU TASTE IT

As temperatures rise and planting season gets underway across Pennsylvania, drivers navigating rural roads should be prepared to share them with large, slow-moving farm equipment.

The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB), along with state government partners, encouraged driver caution during Rural Roads Safety Week from April 12 to 18. Each year, PFB partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Penn-

sylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), and the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) to raise awareness about staying safe on rural roads during the spring planting season.

Drivers should know that farm equipment can legally operate on public roads, including at night, but must follow safety guidelines based on equipment size. Any vehicle traveling under 25 miles per hour is required to display a Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign - an orange triangle with a red border - on the back of the vehicle. Drivers who see that emblem should slow down immediately.

When following a tractor on the road, it is important to keep the following information in mind: farm equipment may turn at unexpected places, into fields or farm lanes; large equipment pulling to the right may be preparing for a wide left turn; never pass unless the oncoming lane is fully clear and visible; and never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, or tunnel.

their babies and feel comfortable with that, because there’s not always a lot of support with that type of grief.”

New drew a contrast to how people respond when people have lost a loved one, saying that many can relate to losing a parent or a grandparent. The majority of people have not dealt with loss in pregnancy, which can create a stigma around the topic.

New did not suggest that joining a support group will remove one’s grief but did state how joining one helped her deal with the struggle.

“My grief is a good part of my life, whether you see it or not,” she said. “I feel like when I give my grief an hour or two each month, it just regulates me for the rest of the month and makes it easier to carry for the rest of the month.”

New started her first support group at Abundant Life Church in April. That

support group is more faith-based and meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month at the church, 320 W. Main St., Birdsboro. “If people feel comfortable sharing, we start out with sharing who we are,” New said. “We share the babies we lost, and then we just kind of go from there in terms of what people are struggling with at that specific meeting.”

The Village Library of Morgantown is also offering a book sale on Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29. The sale will be underway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both days, as well as from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. County Launches Veteran Ambassador Program

The Chester County Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the launch of a Peer Ambassador Program to engage veterans and educate them about the benefits and resources they are entitled to receive. The Peer Ambassador Program grew out of Innovate Chester County. This initiative invited Chester County residents to explore solutions and make recommendations on some of the biggest challenges facing county government.

In addition to veterans’ services, Innovate Chester County also addressed affordable housing, public transportation, children’s mental health, and agriculture.

Three Peer Ambassadors have been selected to pilot the program and will join the Department of Veterans Affairs at outreach events across Chester County. They will engage veterans in one-on-one and smallgroup conversations around seeking support for mental health, housing, addiction, employment, and other critical needs.

The ambassadors include Eric Stetson, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who served in active duty from 1991 to 2015; Vincent Perez, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association and

Betty, a 1966 Plymouth Valiant, will be featured at the show. Fox-Lewis’ grandfather gifted the car to her after her 17th birthday, although FoxLewis returned the car a few years later after it proved not to be suitable for daily use driving on the main line to Cabrini, where she attended college.

“He took the car back, and I thought for sure that he was going to sell it or get rid of it,” she said. “It was 2016 when he got sick, and that’s when I was told that he still had my car.

“Now, I drive it everywhere,” she went on. “It has opened the conversations to a whole new community. I am so honored to be a part of this car show because it’s something that’s so close to my heart.”

All cars, trucks and bikes are welcome at the car show. There is a fee to register per vehicle; spectators can attend for free. Many of the typical categorical awards will be presented at the show, along with a unique category of 10 Alzheimer’s memory awards.

“I have 10 people that have lost someone, and those people are going to walk around and they’re going to pick a car that kind of gives them a memory of their loved one,” Cronomiz said. “As we think about the past with our loved ones, usually that involves a car or a car

At the show, live music will be performed by David Kurtz, a local musician based in Morgantown. There will also be food vendors, giveaways and crafts. Cronomiz is hoping to raise $6,000 with the show to go toward the Alzheimer’s Association.

“We did a little over five (thousand) with the 5K last year,” she explained. “Having the two corporate sponsors this year is going to be a big help.”

In 2020, nearly 300,000 Pennsylvanians lived with Alzheimer’s, including 11.5% of adults over the age of 65. More than $4,000,000,000 of Medicaid money was spent caring for those with Alzheimer’s in 2025.

“My grandfather was one of eight siblings,” FoxLewis said. “Shortly after my grandfather passed away, he lost a brother, also to Alzheimer’s. Last year, a third brother had passed from Alzheimer’s ... it’s so much deeper than just having a loved one go through the disease.”
