Every other year, students from the Community Home School Learning Group take time to honor local veterans by holding a dinner at the Twin Valley Fire Company in Elverson. This year’s event, featuring a meal of homemade lasagna, was held on April 26. According to event organizer Lynne Burkholder, a member of the learning group’s steering committee, the dinner for veterans is put on by the EnLIST class, which stands for Engaging Seventh- and Eighth-Graders in Learning Styles, Interesting People, Speeches and Team-Building Exercises. The dinner is held as part of the TeamBuilding portion of the curriculum. Burkholder said that a group of 12 students, including high-schoolers and seventh- and eighth-graders, worked
together to host the event, which included inviting local veterans from all military conflicts. “The kids who are part of the class first invite people that they know who are veterans, and it (expands) from there,” said Burkholder. This is the sixth time that the EnLIST class has held the event. This year’s dinner was attended by 15 veterans with their spouses and other family members. Veterans included those who served in Afghanistan all the way back to World War II. Burkholder noted that the event is an opportunity for the guests to share information with the students about their time of service. Following dinner, the veterans are invited to speak about their experiences if they choose to. “They are the only program; they share,” she said.
