Morgantown/Honey Brook

Annual Duck Derby Set

The annual Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

As always, the highlight of the day will be the Duck Derby at 3:30 p.m., when people will line the banks of the Hay Creek to watch 1,800 plastic weighted ducks “race” toward the finish line.

“It’s really interesting,” said Nicole Sapna, who organizes the event. “Birdsboro borough workers stand at the bridge, and they dump three large trash bags of ducks in the creek ... there’s a wooden chute that funnels (the ducks) down, and they have to get into the single shoot to be considered.”

The ducks are all standardized and reused every year. A few days before the derby, organizers will individually lay out all the ducks and match them to their sponsor.

The first to-be-determined number of ducks to cross the finish line, as well as the very last duck to cross the finish line, will be the winners. Cash prizes will be

awarded to the “sponsors” of the winning ducks. Local businesses have donated the prize money for the winners. The amount of prize money will depend on how much is donated.

Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit the Boone Area Library. Tickets are not sold online but are available in advance at the library,

Anchored Ministries Prepares

After a successful first year, Anchored Ministries is bringing its “Food Truck Takeover” event back to Twin Valley High School on Saturday, May 16, from 3 to 8 p.m.

Last year, the ministry held its inaugural event that was designed to provide family fun while educating people about the nonprofit organization, which provides assistance to those in need. Nearly 800 people attended the takeover.

“We just really didn’t know how many people would come,” said Donna Larson, a board member

Southeast Region of PFBC Promotes Waterway Well-being

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational activities.

One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water.

“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out there. People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, at Speedwell Forge Lake. The Southeast Region office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, primarily serves as the rules and regulation enforcement headquarters for PFBC, but it does offer some services and amenities.

As outreach and education coordinator, Desko does work out of the Lititz office periodically, but he spends the majority of his work time in the field and around water.

Attendees at the 2025 Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby

129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro, during its hours of operation: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m.; and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A fee will be charged per duck, or people may purchase a “Quack Pack” of five tickets.

“Typically, we’ll sell a decent amount before the race,” Sapna said. “But we always have some that we sell on the day. Last year, we had sold almost 800 beforehand, and then we sold the other 700 that day in the park.”

Last year, sponsors included Kinetic Internet, JP Mascaro & Sons, Butler’s Pantry, Lucky Squirrel Printworks, Lords & Ladies Salon,

Mountz Disposal, Halter Materials & Landscape Supply, Berks Family Eyecare, Snap Fitness of Douglassville, Annamarie’s on Main and Blackwood Golf Course.

Proceeds from the event will be distributed throughout the year for library programming, utilities, staff and other necessary costs. Last year, the library surpassed its $10,000 fundraising goal. Sapna is hoping that the extra ducks this year will bring in more funds.

Throughout the day, there will be entertainment, music, children’s activities, crafts for sale, displays by local groups and businesses and various food trucks. New for this year, live ducks are also currently being hatched at the library; the ducks will be in the park on the day of the event before returning to the farm.

“(We’re) really excited for that,” Sapna said. “We found a farm that does chickens and duck eggs, and we thought it’d be really cool to incorporate that into the whole month of May.”

For more information about the event, search for “Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby” on Facebook or email Sapna at birdsboro duckderby@gmail.com.

“Our goal is for the library to raise money, but also bring awareness of other local businesses and nonprofits in our area,” Sapna said.

The plastic, weighted ducks will “race” down the Hay Creek to raise money for the Boone Area Library.

at Anchored Ministries. “It exceeded our wildest expectations. We were dreaming maybe (300) or 400 people would come.”

About a dozen food trucks are scheduled to participate. Everything from burgers and fries to Mexican food, açaí bowls, salads, ice cream, barbecue and more will be available for purchase.

“I truly didn’t have any idea how much people love food trucks,” Larson said. “A lot of nonprofits have kind of more formal banquets ... this kind of suits our vibe and is just more of a unique or organic way to engage with the community.”

Basket giveaways will also return from last year, along with a new 50/50 drawing. Items in the baskets include Twin Valley Coffee, movie tickets, local restaurant gift cards and more. Larson said there will be about 20 baskets.

Returning from the previous year, there will be live music throughout the afternoon. This year, Philly-area natives Second Breakfast, an acoustic duo who specialize in rock, folk and blues music, will perform at the event.

Like last year, there will be various other activities available at the event. Students from Twin Valley’s National Honor Society will do face painting on kids for free. Vendors, including a florist, will also have tables set up. Proceeds from donations

received during the day will benefit Anchored Ministries. Among the ministry’s programs are its mobile clothing closet, which offers new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, and its prom boutiques, which helps local high-schoolers prepare for dances and get required clothing items.

“Last year, we distributed a little over 50,000 articles of clothing,” said Russ Williams, executive director of Anchored Ministries. “That equated to just shy of $500,000 worth of value that we were able to get back out into the community. The fundraising that we do will directly support getting articles of clothing out to people that need it.”

Twin Valley High School is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. The event will be held rain or shine.

For more information about Anchored Ministries, including the mobile clothing closet schedule, visit www.anchored ministries.org or www .facebook.com/AnchoredMini striesPA. Those with questions may email foodtruck@anchored ministries.org.

One Tractor. Countless Attachments

“We couldn’t do anything without the community,” Wil liams said. “It’s just a cool way to bless the community with just a fun event here in our hometown.”

Anchored Ministries specializes in clothing-related ministries, including its mobile clothing closet and prom boutiques.

Fish and Boat

“I really do enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life,” said Desko. “I grew up in a very rural county. I just enjoy the variety of opportunities around here. We all enjoy fishing. We all come from different backgrounds, but we share this love of being on the water. It feels good to introduce people to these sports.”

Housed in a renovated farmhouse, PFBC’s Southeast Region office employs administrative staff and law enforcement or Water Conservation Officers, who enforce fishing and boating regulations, creel limits and water pollution rules, as well as promote water safety and assist in trout stocking operations. The Southeast Region office also processes boat registrations, launch permits and discounted fishing licenses for disabled veterans, and it offers educational materials and opportunities for residents to borrow fishing rods.

“Our general mission is to protect, conserve and enhance

the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is operated in one of six geographical regions throughout the commonwealth. The Southeast Region is made up of Lancaster, Berks, Chester, Lehigh, Bucks, Delaware, Schuylkill, Northampton, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties and is home to a host of lakes; streams; and major waterways, like the Schuylkill, Delaware and Conestoga rivers.

The Susquehanna River serves as a boundary between the Southeast and Southcentral regions.

“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming up. There are paddling opportunities for whitewater kayaking, as well as gentle paddling on lakes and ponds.”

“In other regions, mountains and backwoods serve as the backdrops,” continued Desko. “We have plenty of fishing opportunities here, but

they may be in places you don’t expect them to be. There are places you can catch monster flathead catfish. There are a lot of places in this region where you can get into some exceptional fishing; it’s just cities serve as the backgrounds instead of mountains.”

An inland state, Pennsylvania boasts a total of more than 86,000 miles of streams and rivers. In the state, nearly 850,000 fishing licenses, 350,000 boat registrations and 150,000 launch permits are sold each year, all of which help fund the PFBC.

The PFBC stocks 3.2 million

raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.

“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”
