Library Provides Sewing Machines, Fabric For Mask Making By Francine Fulton

Although the program Sewing With Miss Nancy is temporarily suspended while the Honey Brook Community Library is closed, the sewing machines used in the program are being put to good use by volunteers making masks for essential community workers in Chester County. The library recently lent sewing machines and donated fabric to the Chester County Masketeers, a newly formed group composed of local residents who use their sewing skills to make reusable cotton masks. To date, the group has delivered more than 1,300 masks to community workers and groups. Information about the group can be found at www.chescomasketeers.com.

“JoAnn Weinberger is a board member for the Chester County Library System. She found out through state Rep. Carolyn Comitta that (the Masketeers) were looking for supplies,” said Jennifer Spade, Honey Brook Library director, explaining how the effort came about. “JoAnn knew that Honey Brook had a sewing program and she emailed me, and I connected her with Nancy Conner, who runs our sewing program.” After Conner prepared the machines for lending, Comitta picked up several of the sewing machines at the library on April 7. The library also donated elastic, cotton material and thread. Later in April, the library donated additional fabric. “(Comitta) reached out to me again and See Masks pg 7

The Chester County commissioners recently announced that the extension of the county government’s essential services-only operation will continue through Friday, May 15, at all county buildings. In addition, the commissioners announced a gradual reopening of all parks owned by Chester County government. The county’s Black Rock Sanctuary and Wolf’s Hollow Park will reopen on Wednesday, May 6, and Hibernia Park, Nottingham Park, Springton Manor Farm and Warwick Park will reopen on Tuesday, May 12. The continuation of essential services-only is designed to protect the health and safety of Chester County’s See County pg 6

Online Music Festival Planned Gardening also teaches a life skill in sustainability, and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July,” Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture.

Three local music venues, Steel City Coffeehouse and The Soundbank in Phoenixville and Chaplin’s in Spring City, will present ChesCo United, an online music festival, on Friday through Sunday, May 15 through 17. Viewers will be able to listen to and watch local musicians as part of the online event, which will stream for

seven hours a day for three consecutive days on Facebook, highlighting each music venue and the artists who perform there. The stream will start at 3:45 p.m. each day; a link to the event can be found at www.chescounitedmusicfestival.com. Among the local musicians who will participate in the event will be Nashville country music artist Sam Schmidthuber, who hails from Morgantown. “(The festival) will have solo performers, folk, Americana, rock ‘n’ roll, blues and country,” explained event organizer Ed Simpson, who owns Steel City Coffeehouse with his wife, Laura Vernola. “While we will be streaming live on Facebook, most of the performances will prerecorded.” See Music Festival pg 2

During an unsettling time of social distancing and cancellations, many local residents have found a therapeutic and productive outlet in gardening, whether it is a newfound interest or a longtime hobby. For families looking for activities that can involve their children, gardening can get the entire family away from screens while providing opportunities to enjoy the spring weather.

Thank you!
