third-grade class at Daniel Boone Area Intermediate Center, nicknamed the Kindness Squad. “(Volunteers) cleaned up trash, swept sidewalks, mulched and planted flowers in all four of our parks,” said Parks and Recreation board member Christen Thompson. The parks are Rustic Park, Main Bird Park, Vest Pocket Park and Lincoln Park. Congregation members from St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church provided lunch to all the volunteers. Volunteers cleaned out St. Mark’s community garden beds and planted vegetables. In Rustic Park, Beautify Birdsboro! volunteers picked up trash along the trails and the banks of Hay Creek. Other volunteers mulched and then planted flowers around the signs of the Birdsboro Industrial Park, St. Mark’s and the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center. Other worksites included the Boone Area Library, Texas Field and borough hall. “We also had volunteers do graffiti abatement and painted a few areas that needed a touch-up,” said Thompson.

The pipe organ came to Welkinweir in 1941, when Everett and Grace Rodebaugh, founding members of GVWA, were searching for a home organ to install in the 18th- and 19th-century farmhouse that they had purchased in East Nantmeal Township. After looking at both new and used instruments, they chose Opus 742A, which was built for a New York stockbroker and installed in his Park Avenue apartment. When the building was slated to be demolished, the Rodebaughs were able to purchase the instrument, which was shipped via rail to Pottstown and then reinstalled by factory technicians into its new home. Laubach said it was not uncommon for well-do-families to have organs in their homes. “In the late 19th century through the early 20th century, the only music you could get was to hire an orchestra, which rich people did in the cities to perform at their balls
In addition, the grounds of Welkinweir will be accessible, and visitors can stroll the property and enjoy the peak of the azalea blossoms. Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy under the tent overlooking the great pond. All activities are free and open to the public; no registration is required. The restoration process for the pipe organ was started in 2014 by Sean O’Donnell & Associates of Boston, Mass. The meticulous process included disassembling the organ, located in the Welkinweir mansion, performing the restoration work and returning it to the site to be reassembled. According to Victoria Laubach, GVWA executive director, the organ music in the mansion is projected down through an ornamental wooden grill insert in the ceiling above the entrance hall. The organ’s pipes and related equipment are located in the attic area on the third floor of the house. The console, which was also restored, is located in an

On the day of the open house, a variety of guest organists will perform both modern and classical music. A video display of the keyboard
and pedals in operation will be shown in the entry hall, highlighting some of the modern technology that was used to enhance the 1928 electronics. Limited tours of the third floor will be offered to view the multiplexer, pipes and inner workings that make up the organ. Laubach said this is a rare opportunity to see an area of the building not normally accessible to visitors. Welkinweir is located at 1368 Prizer Road, Pottstown. Chester County commissioners have announced the achievement of a significant milestone for the county. More than 30% of Chester County has now been preserved as open space. According to the analysis of the Chester County Planning Commission’s (CCPC) Protected Open Space Tracking (POST) system, as of Dec. 31, 2021, Chester County had reached 147,000 acres of preserved land. To commemorate and celebrate the milestone and to share information on the county’s focus for open space preservation in the future, the commissioners will partner with staff from CCPC and the Department of Parks and Preservation to host the 2022 Open Space Summit on
Tuesday, May 10. The 2022 Open Space Summit theme, “Farms for the Future,” will highlight Chester County’s preserved agricultural land and the role it plays in the county’s economy, quality of life, and sense of place. The event will be held at Springton Manor, 860 Springton Road, Glenmoore, from 4 to 7 p.m. Formal presentations will begin at 5 p.m., and tours of Springton Manor Farm and its agricultural operations will begin at 6 p.m. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding will provide the keynote address at the 2022 Open Space Summit. Other topics include regenerative agriculture and a summary of the county’s open space preservation efforts in 2021.
In addition to the summit, tours of preserved farms will be offered across the county on the first three Saturdays in May. These tours will showcase the variety of preserved farms and farm products in Chester County and give residents a unique opportunity to visit agricultural lands and learn about the value of agricultural preservation. These tours will be open to the public, but registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The summit is open to all, and the presentations will be livestreamed for individuals unable to attend in person. Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organization’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephrata. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. Judy Ellsworth, a member of the Book Bonanza Executive Committee, stressed that while the committee is unable to hold a sale in 2022, the future of Book Bonanza looks bright thanks to the generosity
of the Berks County commissioners. The sale will have a permanent home at the anticipated south campus location for Berks County services proposed by the commissioners in Mohnton following upcoming renovations. The decision by the Berks County commissioners to include Book Bonanza in their plans for the new location will assist the sale in consistently raising funds to benefit the public libraries of Berks County along with providing scholarships to women. Both contests are free and open to Pennsylvania students, including those in public, private, charter, cyber-charter, or home school. The deadline for entries is Friday, May 6. The coloring contest is open to students ages 5 to 11 and will give young students the opportunity to create their own judge. After printing the cartoon judge cutouts, students can choose which
judge they want to color and design using their creativity as their guide. The essay contest is open to all students in grades three through 12, with essays being judged on creativity, overall quality, and adherence to the questions. For grades three through five, the question is “ Why is the Pennsylvania Supreme Court important?” For grades six through 12, the question is “Which Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice inspires you and why?” Students and parents are encouraged to submit photo entries on Twitter by tagging @PACourts and using #Supreme300 or by mail

GPS users should enter “Exton.” Many of the plants that will be offered for sale are grown by club members. “We do buy some annuals, vegetables and native plants, but the majority of the perennials and shrubs are donated from the members’ gardens,” said club member Linda Donnon, noting that Pam Halitsky and Terry Miller are cochairs of the sale.
Donnon noted that preparing for the sale begins several weeks in advance. “We dig up the plants from our gardens, divide them and bring them (to the meetinghouse) to pot them up,” she noted. “We try to have three potting days a week until the sale.” Also offered on May 7 will be container gardens, garden crafts and Mother’s Day arrangements. “We have some very talented members who make up flower arrangements for people to buy,” Donnon noted. “We (have) ones in little teacups that kids can buy for their mothers.” There will also be an information table set up where visitors can get answers to their gardening questions from club members.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the upkeep of the 1756 Uwchlan Meeting House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the spring sale, the club holds a Christmas plant and gift sale where it offers wreaths, seasonal flower arrangements, jewelry and baked goods. The Uwchlan Garden Club, a member of District 1 of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, generally meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at the Uwchlan Meeting House. New members are welcome. More information about joining the club will be available at the plant sale.
“(During the meetings) we have hostesses that serve desserts and beverages, and we have lunch and a gardenrelated speaker,” said Donnon. “In the summer, we go to members’ homes to look at their gardens.” Club members also visit local senior centers and schools to lead a plant-related activity. “We go on field trips to different gardens like the Tyler Arboretum,” Donnon added. Good Works Awarded Funding Good Works Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides free home repairs to lowincome residents and families, will receive $50,000 in state grant funding. The funds, which state Sen. Carolyn Comitta helped secure through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Keystone Communities Program, will support the purchase of materials and supplies. Comitta also commended Good Works for its organizational resilience throughout the pandemic. Like many nonprofit organizations, Good Works experienced an increased demand for services and related challenges and impacts. Despite the emergence of COVID-19 variants, Hurricane Ida, economic uncertainty, supply shortages
and rising fuel and material costs, the group completed work on 40 homes last year and assisted 165 families through 27,605 volunteer hours. A faith-based nonprofit organization, Good Works has provided home repair and rehabilitation services to more
than 1,000 homes in the region through more than three decades of service. Along the way, the group has aided seniors, veterans, disabled residents, families and others. Much of the organization’s work is contributed through volunteer service, creating an environment where neighbors
