Spring Into Your Next Chapter!

Friday,

Humane PA

Last year’s event featured a “Star Wars” theme. “Last year, we did a themed walk for the first time because it fell on May 4 (Star Wars Day). We had themed artwork and posters and our mascots Spike and Tilly (were dressed as) Luke Skywalker and Princes Leia.”

Because attendees embraced last year’s theme, this year’s event is titled “The Empire Bites Back.” “We are following the episodic saga of ‘Star Wars,’” said McDevitt. “Last year, people put on costumes. People had their hair twisted up in (Princess Leia) buns, and some of the dogs had Chewbacca vests. We hope people really get into it again.”

Also featured during the day will be live music by returning band Perfect Strangers, local vendors and games. Food will be offered by local food trucks including Smokehouse BBQ, Firehouse Coffee and Fresh Frenchy’s. Viking Lodge 735 will sell its potato spuds and prepare them on-site.

The day will also feature dog contests presented by WEEU that pups and owners can participate in together. Dog contest categories will include Best Dressed, Best Smile, Best Tailwagger, Best Trick and Best Pet/ Owner Look-Alike. Preregistration for the dog contests is not required. Participants will be asked to meet at the entertainment stage around

CREEKSIDE FOODS

12:30 p.m. Dog contest winners will receive a Humane PA swag bag filled with gifts for both humans and canines.

For more information or to register for the walk, visit www.humanepa.org/events/ walk-for-the-animals.

There will be separate fees for adults and for youths age 17 and under. There is also an option to take part as a virtual walker, as well as to register as a VIP Walker, which includes added benefits. Those who raise $250 or more will receive a commemorative Walk for the Animals sweatshirt and bandana.

All proceeds will benefit Humane PA, which has a mission to “empower people to increase their capacity to care for animals so that all animals are healthy, safe and treated humanely.” Humane PA operates Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading; the Humane Pennsylvania Lancaster Campus, 2195 Lincoln Highway East; the Humane Veterinary Hospital, 1729 N. 11th St., Reading; the Giorgi Family Community Resource Center, 1350 Schuylkill Ave., Reading, which offers a pet food pantry, vaccines and microchip clinic; and the Danielle Ruiz-Murphy Dog Park, 503 S. Center Road (Route 82), Birdsboro. Visit www.HumanePA.org for more information.

Those with questions about the walk may contact Lauren Henderson Pignetti, director of development, at lpignetti@humanepa.org or 610-750-6100, ext. 211.

TVMS students

“Join the Greatest American Cleanup! Show Us How You Can Keep Your Community Litter Free for America’s 250th Birthday.”

The Greatest American Cleanup is Keep America Beautiful’s national three-year campaign to motivate communities to clean up ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. More than 500 students participated in this year’s program.

In the award-winning video, the TVMS students show images of litter in front of the school and overflowing trash bins. The video then shows students picking up trash.

“Litter hurts both animals and humans,” according to the video narrative, which reported that cigarette butts and pieces of plastic are the most littered items in Pennsylvania.

“Put your trash in the right trash bin, not on the ground,” the video advises.

It also mentions the danger of throwing microplastics into the regular trash bin. “Microplastics can’t

from pg 1

break down, so put your litter and recyclables into the right trash bin,” the video states.

The video encourages others to take part in litter cleanup efforts with the conclusion, “We need you to help keep Pennsylvania beautiful. Imagine what would happen if every person picked up litter. Not only would Pennsylvania be beautiful, but the entire planet would benefit. Let’s keep America beautiful in honor of America’s 250th birthday.”

First- and second-place winners in each grade level received certificates and a Litter Hawk decal. Winning entries were also displayed in the East Wing Rotunda of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg. To view the video and all of the winning entries and for more information about the program, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org/grants -awards/awards/litter-hawk. Winners are also featured at www.facebook .com/keeppabeautiful.

offering breakfast and lunch, including walking tacos, hot dogs, hamburgers and barbecue sandwiches, as well as snacks, candy and beverages. “The kitchen will (offer) breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit and doughnuts and lunch items,” Frazier said, noting that volunteers will prepare the food on-site. “We have gotten donations from Shady Maple, Weis Markets and BB’s (Grocery Outlet) to use in the kitchen that day.”

Among the crafts offered for sale

from pg

will be jewelry, crocheted and knitted items and grapevine wreaths. Also on hand will be a face painter and a local baker as well as a representative from Joshua’s Garden, which offers organic skin care and cleansers, serum and body lotions. Handmade bracelets will be offered by Samantha’s Beads, which is run by a 13-year-old Chester County resident who turned her hobby into a business.

“I will also have some crafts made by special needs students from John Paul II (Center for Special Learning),” Frazier added.

In the event of inclement weather, vendors will be given the choice to donate their fee to the library or receive a refund.

For more information or to reserve a vendor space, contact Frazier directly at shearheaven hairsalon@yahoo.com. Walk-ins will also be welcome.

Class of 1958 sets reunion

Members of the Class of 1958 from S. Horace Scott High School will hold a reunion lunch on Wednesday, May 7, at 12:15 p.m. The event will be held at Shady Maple Smorgasbord, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, and attendees should use the banquet lobby entrance.

Reunion committee members will escort participants to the private room, where payment for the lunch will be received. For more details, email amelia.alice.collins@gmail.com or swolownikfrontiernet.net@ yahoo.com.

Embracing the clutter

If something tends to fall out when you open your kitchen cabinet or closet or if you choose your outfit for the day based on what is clean on top of the laundry basket in your bedroom, you are not alone. Many of us with busy lives struggle with clutter and organization.

And, while we will never alphabetize our spices or color code our closets, our homes are not like those you see on an episode of “Hoarders.” We do clean our bathrooms, wash our dishes, vacuum our carpets, mop our kitchen floors and dust. (Well, occasionally we dust.) Rather, there are parts of our homes that suffer because of lack of attention.

The main problem areas are the closets, the garage and the basement. These places often become catchalls for anything that is not needed immediately. This may include craft projects, such as that bench you bought at a yard sale with hopes to refinish it, the pair of pants that need to be hemmed or that Christmas present you bought way in advance.

At our house, our basement is home to a full warehouse of sports equipment that covers all seasons, such as extra golf clubs; a hockey bag complete with skates; both softball and baseball bats along with cleats; and the assortment of soccer balls, basketballs and volleyballs.

Then, there is the junk drawer. Here is where you will find buttons, receipts, the instruction book for an old blender, spools of thread, zip ties, coins and other assorted “treasures.”

While it is easy to wash and dry clothing, the laundry that makes it to the bedroom somehow never gets put away. That is when the bedroom chair comes into play. This is where clothes that are not quite dirty enough to be put in the laundry live alongside clothes that are not clean enough to be hung in the closet. Some call it the clothes pile or the “chairdrobe” (chair plus wardrobe). Benches can also qualify for this designation.

One professional organizer suggests going into the problem areas each day, such as the basement or garage, to sort and throw away unneeded items. She advises people to set the timer on their phones for 10 minutes. Apparently, 10 minutes is the perfect time to get some work done without becoming frustrated.

I have nothing against cleaning or organizing and often donate unused items to the local thrift stores, which are desperately in need of donations. Proceeds from these stores benefit people in need.

The problem, as usual, seems to be time. We are all so busy with work and family obligations. Plus, there are TV shows to binge, Phillies games to

watch, books to be read, flowers to be picked and trails to be explored - along with the dogs. Parents have ballgames to attend, birthday parties to plan and children to chauffeur to all of their many activities.

Although our homes may not be Martha Stewart perfect, they are places where family and friends feel comfortable, safe and loved. We don’t mind a few dog or cat hairs that the vacuum misses; the occasional jacket, pair of shoes or backpack left by the doorway; or the throw rug that covers the grape juice stain in the carpet.

And if that rare day finally comes when there are no errands to run or sports games to watch or if rain precludes an extended dog walk, we may spend some time tackling that junk drawer, closet, garage or basement. Someday, we may even alphabetize our spices and color code our closet.
