Annual Duck Derby Set

The annual Birdsboro Street Fair

and Duck Derby will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

As always, the highlight of the day will be the Duck Derby at 3:30 p.m., when people will line the banks of the Hay Creek to watch 1,800 plastic weighted ducks “race” toward the finish line.

“It’s really interesting,” said Nicole Sapna, who organizes the event. “Birdsboro borough workers stand at the bridge, and they dump three large trash bags of ducks in the creek ... there’s a wooden chute that funnels (the ducks) down, and they have to get into the single shoot to be considered.”

The ducks are all standardized and reused every year. A few days before the derby, organizers will individually lay out all the ducks and match them to their sponsor.

The first to-be-determined number of ducks to cross the finish line, as well as the very last duck to cross the finish line, will be the winners. Cash prizes will be

awarded to the “sponsors” of the winning ducks. Local businesses have donated the prize money for the winners. The amount of prize money will depend on how much is donated.

Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit the Boone Area Library. Tickets are not sold online but are available in advance at the library,

Mother-Son, Community Paint Events Planned

Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) will hold its third annual mother-son event on Saturday, May 16.

After last year’s science-themed night and 2024’s game night, MCC will host a mother-son scavenger hunt at 10 a.m. at Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown.

“I think it’ll turn out really good,” said Connie Brown-Weber, who organizes the annual mother-son events. “Families look forward to this every year.”

MCC also runs daddy-daughter dance events annually, which invited the question of whether a similar event could be viable.

Pennsylvania 4-H Week and National Agriculture Week Recognized

Chester County officials recognized Pennsylvania 4-H Week and National Agriculture Week during a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, highlighting the importance of youth leadership programs and the agricultural industry to the county and the commonwealth.

Local 4-H representatives, Penn State Extension staff members, and Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding joined the commissioners to mark the observances and discuss the impact of agriculture and 4-H programs across Chester County.

Heidi Bramm, president of Tri-Community Dairy 4-H, spoke about the value of hands-on learning and leadership opportunities provided through the organization.

“4-H really gives me the opportunity to grow as a person,” said Bramm. “There are so many great people through 4-H that can guide you because they respect the program, and they know that kids who go there want to learn and do these things, so doing that gives you the ability to learn so much. It’s just an amazing group of people, and it attracts more amazing people.”

The commissioners emphasized the importance of supporting programs that prepare the next generation of agricultural and community leaders. In their proclamation, they noted that 4-H continues to play a vital role in youth development and the future of the county’s agricultural community.

Daniel Boone Homestead will host its annual Children’s Day on Sunday, May 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at the homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro.

This year, the event has a new name. In accordance with America’s 250th anniversary, this year’s theme is “A Revolutionary Children’s Day.”

“It conveys a little bit more of the (America) 250, military focus,” said Amanda Machik, the director of the museum. “A lot of the fan-favorites we will still have.”

Children’s Day has been held annually for at least 20 years.

Volunteers will teach about food preservation, and children will have the chance to help make butter.

Learning opportunities will also be aplenty - volunteers will teach children how to write with a quill pen and teach them about schooling in lighting in the 18th century.

Tours of the Boone House and the Bertolet Log House will also be offered throughout the day. At the log house, children will be able to view animal furs and skins and play with old-fashioned toys and games.

Quill writing will be one of the activities offered at this year’s Children’s Day event.

tice their swordsmanship skills.

New for this year, in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, young visitors will have the chance to pick up “Washington’s Orders” to guide them through Revolutionary War themed activities, ending with a visit with General Washington.

During the event, which is being sponsored by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates (DBHA), families will be able to experience Colonial life through hands-on activities such as textile processing, candle dipping, quill pen writing and tinsmithing.

Children will have the opportunity to learn about Daniel Boone’s mother, Sarah Boone, as well as her famous butter and cheese.

In another new activity this year, kids can join a militia where they will employ wooden dummy guns, learn about the Continental Army and practice muster drills. They will also have the chance to sit in a soldiers’ saddle and prac-

An admission fee will be charged; pre-registration is not required. Children age 5 and under may enter for no cost, as well as DBHA members. No pets, except service animals, and no smoking are permitted.

Machik said the event pulled in 100 children last year, although the weather heavily impacted the attendance; she also said that they expect 200 to 300 participants if the weather holds.

“Last year, I don’t think it was too cold, but it was rainy,” she said. “I’m hoping

for better weather... unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of indoor space. There are some things that we can move indoors, but people still have to walk from one thing to another.”

The homestead is the birthplace of the historic frontiersman, born in 1734. It is located on 579 acres of countryside in Birdsboro in the epicenter of the tricounty area. It is operated by the DHBA, a local nonprofit organization.

For more information about the homestead, call 610-582-4900 or search for “Daniel Boone Homestead” on Facebook.

Theorem Painting Workshop Planned

The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates will hold its second Theorem Painting Workshop featuring Peggy Allen from Heritage Art and Craft Studio on Sunday, May 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro.

Theorem painting is a distinctive and rarely taught early American art form created exclusively through stenciling. Allen will guide participants in a step-by-step process of creating their own 8-by-10-inch theorem paintings of fruit compote in a glass bowl. Using

layered stencils, brushes, and oil paints on fabric suitable for framing, each participant will produce a realistic portrait that appears hand-painted but is achieved through a step-by-step application of layered stenciling. No experience is required, and practice will be provided before doing the actual theorem.

In addition to the hands-on portion of the workshop, Allen will discuss theorem painting’s history, composition, and creative process. On display will be a private collection of theorem paintings from local and regional artists. Allen, a native of Berks County and co-owner of Heritage Art and Craft Studio, a mobile art studio, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. While she offers a wide range of classes, her true passion lies in traditional American crafts. Allen stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American

Decoration (HSEAD).

To register for the workshop by Sunday, May 10, email thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com to receive a registration form. There is a fee, with a discount for members of the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates. All supplies will be included, and proceeds will support the homestead. For more information, visit www.thedanielboone homestead.org.

Participants will create their own theorem paintings of fruit compote in a glass bowl during the workshop.

“In Chester County, 335 young people participate in 32 clubs, completing projects that allow them to make friends, experience teamwork, and learn life skills,” said Commissioner Marian Moskowitz. “4-H in Chester County is served by a network of 101 volunteers, educators, and staff, and provides a curriculum for teachers, after-school programs, and community partners who provide hands-on and interactive learning to more than 4,300 young people.”

Following the recognition of Pennsylvania 4-H Week, the commissioners proclaimed National Agriculture Week, highlighting the economic, cultural, and environmental importance of agriculture in Chester County. Agriculture remains one of Pennsylvania’s leading industries, and Chester County is among the state’s top agricultural producers.

As part of the proclamation, the commissioners also recognized Bob and Adrienne Cochran of Hidden View Farm as owners of the only known Chester County tricentennial farm, honoring families whose farms have remained in continuous operation and family ownership for more than 300 years. The recognition highlights the deep agricultural roots of Chester County and the generations of farm families who have helped sustain the county’s farming heritage.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding attended the meeting and emphasized the significance of Ches -

ter County’s agricultural community, noting that the county’s farms and agricultural businesses contribute substantially to the state’s diverse food and farming economy.

“Chester County is an amazing place, both for its people and its history,” Redding said. “You can’t talk about agriculture and really the history of this nation without talking

about Chester County.”

Pennsylvania 4-H Week and National Agriculture Week were both recognized from March 15 to 21 to acknowledge the contributions of young Pennsylvania 4-H members, farmers, agricultural businesses, and agricultural organizations that help provide food, fiber, and fuel for communities across the United States.

Lectures and Walking Tours Planned

The Chester County commissioners have announced the return of the Town Tours and Village Walks program, which has been expanded this year in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The program is entering its 32nd season, and this year’s theme, “13 Tours for 13 Colonies,” will focus on the places, people, and events in Chester County that molded and defined

the complex tapestry of history that shaped the U.S. In addition to the 13 tours, the program will include three lectures. The program will kick off at the Chester County Courthouse, 201 W. Market St., West Chester, on Thursday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m.

The subsequent programs will take place on select Thursdays. All activities are free and open to the public. The lectures will be

“Pennsylvania Ironmasters and the Revolution” on May 7, “When the Declaration of Independence Was News” on July 23, and “Historic Yellow Springs” on Oct. 15.

The walking tours will be “Spring-Ford Area Historical Society” on May 14, “Woven in History: A Textile Collection at Hibernia Mansion” on May 21, “Women and Minorities in

Twin Valley Bible Academy, 105 Shirktown Road, Narvon, will hold its annual spring fling on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Planned events include a car wash, vendors, a yard sale, and a chicken barbecue. Attendees may learn about Twin Valley Bible Academy, including details about free preschool and free kindergarten for the 2026-27 school year.

For more information, call 610-286-9795.

“We thought that we should be doing something for moms and their boys,” Brown-Weber said. “I have a committee, and each year we’ll pick out what the theme will be for the following year.”

Thus, the mother-son events were born. Being close to Mother’s Day is an added bonus. This year’s event will feature two different scavenger hunts, one for younger kids and one for older children. Younger kids will be searching for more broad objects like leaves and rocks, while older children will be looking for tougher-to-find items like bugs.

This year’s mother-son event will be the first to be held outdoors.

“We just thought it would be nice to get them out in nature and just explore,” Brown-Weber said.

The event isn’t limited to just birth mothers; stepmoms, grandmothers, aunts or other adult female mentors are welcome. Last year, MCC had around 50 families participate. This year, Brown-Weber said

organizers are hoping to increase that tally.

Preregistration is required at www.weare thatchurch.churchcenter .com/calendar. There is a cost to sign up, and a picnic lunch is included in the price of registration.

MCC will also hold a free sensation kids gathering community paint night on Friday, June 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church’s main campus, 4221 Main St., Elverson.

The event is specially designed for parents of children with special needs who could use a brief window of rest. Parents will paint while their kids do activities with trained professionals.

“That event is exceptional because it gives parents an opportunity for a little bit of a break,” said Amy Marburger, who is involved with the ministry. “Connie has such a great team that’s all trained on how to navigate kids with special needs.”

“It’s all nurses that have worked with children with special needs, or teachers and aides that work with

kids with special needs in the school district, or they might work in a day care setting where they’ve had training through their center,” Brown-Weber said.

MCC will also hold various free family events throughout the summer, including a game night at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 5, and an ice cream social at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19. For more information about the ministry or its events, visit the aforementioned link or

the MCC Facebook page.

“When my kids were little, I would always look for free events to do with my kids,” Brown-Weber said. “I just want to be able to provide a fun, safe place for kids to go and have activities that they can do with their families.”

MCC holds Sunday services at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. at its Elverson (main) campus and at 4:30 p.m. at its Birdsboro campus, 144 S. Walnut St., Birdsboro.
