Scrapbooking event to benefit Twin Valley Food Pantry

The Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP) Fundraiser Crop is held twice each year, during which “croppers” come together to create scrapbooks. The books are filled with memorabilia, photos and other mementos of special events, such as a family vacation or a wedding, and are often embellished with scraps of fabric, ribbon, stickers or text.

This year’s spring event will take place on Friday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, where the TVFP is located. All attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the pantry. The ticket price includes snacks and beverages. On April 25, there

will be a soup and salad lunch and a baked potato bar for dinner. April 26 will feature welcome snacks for breakfast; sandwiches from Nuse’s Deli for lunch; and chicken Parmesan, pasta and salad from Antonio’s Pizza for dinner.

“It is definitely a place to share ideas, have some fellowship with the gals and not have to cook.”

Denise Crissup, a member of the organizing team, explained that attendees bring their own scrapbooking supplies to work on throughout the weekend. They can attend either day or both. Additional crafters outside of scrapbookers are also welcome.

“Whatever project you’re working on, you bring it. It’s not just scrapbooking. You can use the same (scrapbooking) supplies to make cards,” she explained.

In February, Crissup organized a fundraiser crop for the first time at the Bowmansville Fire Company, during which crafters took on other projects. “One woman who came to the Bowmansville event used a sewing machine to add a little of border flair to paper - fabric on (scrapbooking) paper,” she pointed out. “We had another gal at the Bowmansville event who did various crafts and brought all of her supplies and put together some items.” Other participants made jewelry or did pre-quilting. The scrapbooking events are designed to promote fellowship among attendees, who also help one another with their projects.

Tel Hai resident celebrates 100th birthday

Friends, family and staff members gathered on April 11 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Eleanor “Ellie” Hammond at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. Also in attendance at the special event was Rep. Dan Williams, who presented Ellie with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Ellie, who was born on April 13, 1925, was joined at the party by her daughters Lesley Durr, who resides in a cottage at Tel Hai, and Toni Finch, who attended with her husband, Earl Finch.

Toni’s twin sister, Becky Singer, was unable to attend. In addition to three children, Ellie has two grandchildren.

The party included cake; a rendition of “Happy Birthday” by Tel Hai residents and staff members; and a prayer offered by David Hicks, Tel Hai chaplain.

“It is an honor to celebrate your

100th year,” said Williams, who then read the citation, which stated, in part, “The House of Representatives is pleased to recognize those individuals who

TVMS students create award-winning video

A team of sixth-graders from Twin Valley Middle School (TVMS) - Olivia Levan, Mariah Posey and Aislyn Schultz - were first-place winners of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Litter Hawk Youth Award program for creating an anti-littering video. The TVMS students, along with other winners, were recognized at a ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building on April 3. The program, funded by the

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, provides a way for students in kindergarten through grade six to express their concerns about litter by submitting artwork, an essay or a video. The theme was “Join the Greatest American Cleanup! Show Us How You Can Keep Your Community Litter Free for America’s 250th Birthday.”

motivate communities to clean up ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. More than 500 students participated in this year’s program.

In the award-winning video, the TVMS students show images of litter in front of the school and overflowing trash bins. The video then shows students picking up trash.

“Litter hurts both animals and humans,” according to the video narrative, which reported that cigarette butts and pieces of plastic are the most littered items in Pennsylvania. “Put your trash in the right trash bin, not on the ground,” the video advises. It also mentions the danger of throwing microplastics into the regular trash bin. “Microplastics can’t break down, so put your

litter and recyclables into the right trash bin,” the video states.

The video encourages others to take part in litter cleanup efforts with the conclusion, “We need you to help keep Pennsylvania beautiful. Imagine what would happen if every person picked up litter. Not only would Pennsylvania be beautiful, but the entire planet would benefit. Let’s keep America beautiful in honor of America’s 250th birthday.”

First- and second-place winners in each grade level received certificates and a Litter Hawk decal. Winning entries will be displayed in the East Wing Rotunda of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg through Wednesday, April 30.

To view the video and all of the winning entries and for more information about the program, visit www.keeppabeautiful .org/grants-awards/awards/ litter-hawk. Winners are also featured at www.facebook.com/ keeppabeautiful.

through their wisdom and experience have contributed to the enrichment and betterment of succeeding generations. Mrs. Hammond has demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship and truly deserves special recognition.”

Ellie, who was born in New Jersey, was married to the late John Hammond, who was a lineman for PECO Energy. “They attended high school together in Coatesville,” noted Durr.

noting that the office sometimes dealt with children with bad behaviors. “I found out something about kids - they are all good somewhere. There is something good in everybody. I think I was understanding because I had three children.”

Ellie was a member of St. Cecilia’s in Coatesville and was active in her community. She was a volunteer at the local voting polls in Caln Township for many years.

Poole Forge to host plant swap, trout derby

Historic Poole Forge (HPF), 1940 Main St. (Route 23), Narvon, has planned two special events - a spring plant swap and a children’s trout derby.

The annual spring plant swap will take place on Friday, April 25. Setup will be at 6 p.m. in the HPF pavilion. The swap will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The 11th annual Children’s Trout Derby is set for Saturday, April 26. Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m., with fishing slated for 9 a.m. to noon. The free event will be held rain or shine.

10 ROADSIDE MARKET

During World War II, Ellie worked as a draftsman for the Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville. “It was an exciting experience working in the mill. We were making steel plates for ships,” she said. “If parts were broken, they brought them to me, and I would draw them, and they would make (the replacements).”

She was later employed as a secretary in the discipline and attendance offices of the Coatesville Area School District. “I worked in the school district for many principals,” she said,

Ellie said she has always enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, making crafts and cooking, noting that her best dish is spaghetti with clam sauce.

When asked her secret to a long life, she replied, “Working hard,” noting that she retired at the age of 83.

Tel Hai staff members on hand for the celebration included Jolene Weaver, director of communications. “(Ellie) participates in Residents Council, does her own care plans with nursing staff and is just a joy to our staff,” said Weaver. “She’s one of a kind.”

Township to dedicate skate park

Honey Brook Township will dedicate its new skate park on Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m.

The skate park is located at 173 Suplee Road, Honey Brook, at James A. Umble Memorial Park.

The Honey Brook Dream Team will present demonstrations, and a Buddy’s Burgers food truck will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will also feature the dedications of Jackson Short’s Troop 9 Eagle Scout project and a park bench donated in memory of Robert “Skate” Zamecki.

Community members enjoy the new skate park.

Participants may bring annuals, perennials, shrubs, rooted cuttings, vegetable plants, seeds, bulbs, vines, trees and houseplants to share with others. The plants should be in containers and labeled with growing instructions if possible.

As people arrive on the day of the event, they will be directed to tables where they can place their plants. The tables will be marked with different categories such as sun perennials, shade perennials and herbs. The plant swap is free among participants; no money is exchanged.

Children will be divided into two age groups: ages 4 to 8 and ages 9 to 12. Prizes will be awarded in both groups. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Beartown Sportsman Association will assist with the derby. The association will host its own derby on Saturday, May 3, and the community is invited to attend.

Historic Poole Forge is located on Route 23, 7 miles east of New Holland and 3 miles east of the Shady Maple Complex. For more information, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or www.facebook.com/pooleforge. Those with questions may email hpf1940@gmail.com.

“It is definitely a place to share ideas, have some fellowship with the gals and not have to cook. It’s a mother’s dream,” Crissup said.

Those who attend the TVFP Fundraiser Crop will also have an opportunity to win prizes and shop from vendors. Prizes this year will include scrapbooking supplies and gift certificates for different scrapbooking events. There will also be gift baskets such as a honey-themed basket and a summer basket with beach towels and sunscreen.

All those who register will also receive $5 worth of Craft Bucks. “We used to have a welcome gift, but now we give Craft Bucks that can be used at the scrapbook vendors so they can (choose) their own welcome gift,” Crissup noted.
