From Litter to Literacy

Turning trash into treasure is the name of the game.

On Saturday, April 25, at 9 a.m., the Twin Valley Rotary Club and Twin Valley High School’s (TVHS) National Honor Society (NHS) chapter will host their annual Litter to Literacy event.

The day will feature members of both the Rotary Club and NHS cleaning up a 2.6-mile stretch of Route 23 from the Twin Valley Fire Department to the Botanery Barn restaurant in Elverson.

The Rotary Club is seeking sponsors for the event to support the cleanup; proceeds will go toward the Village Library of Morgantown. Those interested can send checks made out to the “Rotary Club of Twin Valley” to 2939 Conestoga Creek Road, Morgantown.

“As a whole, the environment

plus service plus education, I thought we could make something out of that,” said Bruce Hartshorne, the former president of the Rotary Club. “So I came up with the idea of litter into literacy, and we’ve been

running with that ever since.”

The Rotary Club joined PennDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway program in 1998, assuming responsibility for keeping the stretch of roadway litter-free. NHS joined the effort

Daniel Boone Homestead will host its annual Children’s Day on Sunday, May 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at the homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro.

This year, the event has a new name. In accordance with America’s 250th anniversary, this year’s theme is “A Revolutionary Children’s Day.”

“It conveys a little bit more of the (America) 250, military focus,” said Amanda Machik, the director of the museum. “A lot of the fan-favorites we will still have.”

Children’s Day has been held annually for at least 20 years.

Chester County officials recognized Pennsylvania 4-H Week and National Agriculture Week during a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, highlighting the importance of youth leadership programs and the agricultural industry to the county and the commonwealth.

Local 4-H representatives, Penn State Extension staff members, and Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding joined the commissioners to mark the observances and discuss the impact of agriculture and 4-H programs across Chester County.

Heidi Bramm, president of Tri-Community Dairy 4-H, spoke about the value of hands-on learning and leadership opportunities provided through the organization.

“4-H really gives me the opportunity to grow as a person,” said Bramm. “There are so many great people through 4-H that can guide you because they respect the program, and they know that kids who go there want to learn and do these things, so doing that gives you the ability to learn so much. It’s just an amazing group of people, and it attracts more amazing people.”

The commissioners emphasized the importance of supporting programs that prepare the next generation of agricultural and community leaders. In their proclamation, they noted that 4-H continues to play a vital role in youth development and the future

in 2021, and the fundraising element of the annual cleanup was added in 2022.

TVHS principal and Rotarian Bill Clements helped facilitate the involvement of the school’s NHS chapter.

During the event, which is being sponsored by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates (DBHA), families will be able to experience Colonial life through hands-on activities such as textile processing, candle dipping, quill pen writing and tinsmithing.

Children will have the opportunity to learn about Daniel Boone’s mother, Sarah Boone, as well as her famous butter and cheese. Volunteers will teach about food preservation, and children will have the chance to help make butter.

guns, learn about the Continental Army and practice muster drills. They will also have the chance to sit in a soldiers’ saddle and practice their swordsmanship skills.

An admission fee will be charged; pre-registration is not required. Children age 5 and under may enter for no cost, as well as DBHA members. No pets, except service animals, and no smoking are permitted.

“It was a natural fit to have them,” Hartshorne said. “We issued the invitation to them, and they’ve been joining us for the last (four) years now.”

Last year, volunteers from NHS and the Rotary Club kept high spirits despite rainy weather and gray skies. NHS members found odd items along the highway like car parts and even a yoga mat.

To be a part of TVHS’ NHS chapter, students must maintain certain academic standards and be nominated by their teachers to participate. NHS students take part in various community service projects throughout the year but noted that last year’s Litter to Literacy event felt special.

“This probably has the biggest impact,” said current TVHS senior Maggie Stoltzfus. “You are actually making a difference.”

PennDOT provides the Rotary Club with bright orange/yellow vests and work gloves for the volunteers. The agency also assists with collecting the gathered trash following the conclusion of the event.

Last year, the event raised just shy of $16,000 for the library. Hartshorne said the club is hoping to increase that figure to at least $18,000 this time around.

The Twin Valley Rotary Club is a community service club. In addition to its annual trash pickup and Empty Bowls fundraiser, the club sponsors the Student of the Month program at TVHS and awards graduating senior students with scholarships.

The club meets at 7:30 a.m. on the first and fifth Wednesday of every month at the aforementioned Village Library, 207 Walnut St., Morgantown. It also meets at 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month at Windmill Family Restaurant, 2838 Main St., Morgantown. Prospective members are welcome.

To learn more about the club, visit “The Rotary Club of Twin Valley” Facebook page or www.twinvalley rotary.org.

American Legion to

Host Spring Fling

Honey Brook American Legion Post 422 will host a “Spring Fling” event at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at 4821 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. The event is free and open to the public, although patrons are required to be at least 21

years old to attend. There will be food, a cash bar and a DJ providing entertainment. The event is slated to run until 11 p.m.

For more information about Post 422, call 610-273-3333 or search “American Legion Auxiliary Post 422” on Facebook.

Learning opportunities will also be aplenty - volunteers will teach children how to write with a quill pen and teach them about schooling in lighting in the 18th century.

Tours of the Boone House and the Bertolet Log House will also be offered throughout the day. At the log house, children will be able to view animal furs and skins and play with old-fashioned toys and games.

New for this year, in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, young visitors will have the chance to pick up “Washington’s Orders” to guide them through Revolutionary War themed activities, ending with a visit with General Washington.

In another new activity this year, kids can join a militia where they will employ wooden dummy

Machik said the event pulled in 100 children last year, although the weather heavily impacted the attendance; she also said that they expect 200 to 300 participants if the weather holds.

“Last year, I don’t think it was too cold, but it was rainy,” she said. “I’m hoping for better weather... unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of indoor space. There are some things that we can move indoors, but people still have to walk from one thing to another.”

The homestead is the birthplace of the historic frontiersman, born in 1734. It is located on 579 acres of countryside in Birdsboro in the epicenter of the tri-county area. It is operated by the DHBA, a local nonprofit organization.

For more information about the homestead, call 610-582-4900 or search for “Daniel Boone Homestead” on Facebook.

The 20th West Chester International Short Film Festival will take place from Friday, April 24, to Sunday, April 26. The event will begin with an opening night party, followed by curated blocks of films, workshops, pop-up blocks, and more. Events will take place at multiple venues in West Chester. Each two-hour block of films, all thirty minutes or less, will include a mix of genres, including dramas, documentaries, experimental works, animated films, and comedies. The films were chosen from a record number of submissions from more than 45 coun-

tries. The lineup includes Oscar nominees and winners, local favorites, and stories representing voices from around the world. The Chester Awards will be presented at an event on Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m., and on April 26, the Closing Night Best of the Fest will showcase a lineup of Chester Award-winning films and fan favorites, along with the announcement of the People’s Choice award winner. of the county’s agricultural community.

“In Chester County, 335 young people participate in 32 clubs, completing projects that allow them to make friends, experience teamwork, and learn life skills,” said Commissioner Marian Moskowitz. “4-H in Chester County is served by a network of 101 volunteers, educators, and staff, and provides a curriculum for teachers, after-school programs, and community partners who provide hands-on and interactive learning to more than 4,300 young people.”

Following the recognition of Pennsylvania 4-H Week, the commissioners proclaimed National Agriculture Week, highlighting the economic, cultural, and environmental importance of agriculture in Chester County. Agriculture remains one of Pennsylvania’s leading industries, and Chester County is among the state’s top agricultural producers.

As part of the proclamation, the commissioners also recognized Bob and Adrienne Cochran of Hidden View Farm as owners of the only known Chester County tricentennial farm, honoring families whose farms have remained in continuous operation and family ownership for more than 300 years. The recognition highlights the deep agricultural roots of Chester County and the generations of farm families who have helped sustain the county’s farming heritage.

“Chester County is an amazing place, both for its people and its history,” Redding said. “You can’t talk about agriculture and really the history of this

nation without talking about Chester County.”

Pennsylvania 4-H Week and National Agriculture Week were both recognized from March 15 to 21 to acknowledge the contributions of young Pennsylvania 4-H members, farmers, agricultural businesses, and agricultural organizations that help provide food, fiber, and fuel for communities across the United States.

In New Holland, Evolution of Agriculture Equipment Continues

You can take the company out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the company.

Formerly known as New Holland Machine Company or Case New Holland, CNH has grown into a global conglomerate that its founders never could’ve imagined. But the company will always be linked to the New Holland area - its farming, its work ethic, its ingenuity.

“Here in Lancaster County, we see a lot of farms and a lot of farmers,” said Mark Lowery, the director of dealer development for CNH in North America. “Do people know our story? Certainly, people involved with agricultural production do. It goes back to, ‘Do you know where your food comes from?’ The broader population in Lancaster County might not know the story. But there’s been a long history

of agricultural production here.”

It’s a story of innovation, mergers and acquisitions and small-town values playing well on a world stage.

The roots of CNH can be traced to a New Holland barn 131 years ago and a gentleman named Abe Zimmerman. Today, CNH, which is headquartered in Great Britain, operates 40 plants around the world; employs a total of 35,000 workers; and generates in excess of $20 billion in global revenue.

“CNH is a global brand, but a lot of people don’t know it was originally named after a town in eastern Lancaster County,” said Lowery. “We owe a lot to this local area and the innovations that made us a global brand.”

CNH still operates a location in its 6,000-resident hometown of New Holland, at 500 Diller Road. But thanks to advances in technology, the operation looks a lot different than it did a century ago.

CNH’s New Holland location is a 350-acre campus consisting of five buildings - an administration building, a technical center focusing on research, development and design, a building for combine field testing, a technical training center and a home for CNH industrial

capital. The local campus also operates a company farm at the site.

The New Holland location of CNH employs about 900 workers.

“I think one of the keys to the evolution is that our pace never slows down for research and development,” said Lowery, “and one of those research and development centers is here in New Holland. It’s about a lot of talented people and having them in the right places. It’s about investing in sites like New Holland and bringing in people who are passionate about the products.”

CNH manufactures offroad equipment for agriculture and construction, everything from tractors to harvesting equipment, from balers to sprayers, from utility vehicles to implements. Every product CNH makes is designed to maximize human energies.

“We have 11,000 patents registered for products that we invented or innovated,” said Lowery, a resident of Willow Street.

“Engineering influences all the products we make.”

“As far as agriculture goes, the farmer and rancher are our primary customers,” continued Lowery. “They use our products to feed and make food. Certainly, the focus is, ‘How do we help people be more efficient?’

Farmers and ranchers have

to continue to be more efficient. Our challenge is to use technology to make machines that are more efficient and make people’s lives easier. We help farmers be more profitable.”

After Zimmerman’s initiatives were incorporated in 1903 as New Holland Machine Company, four Lancaster businessmen bought the company in 1940 and partnered with Ed Nolt, the inventor of a small square baler.

“The key innovation that made the site important was the square baler,” said Lowery. “That propelled New Holland as a company. It had immediate success and it had a global effect.”

During the 1990s, the New Holland enterprise became affiliated with both Ford and Fiat. In 1999, the company that is now CNH was created.

“To have a homegrown company - with local people who have supported it - make a global impact is important to New Holland and Pennsylvania,” said Lowery. “For a lot of folks, from here and across Lancaster County, this company has been very important, and I think they want to see that success continue. There are so many people who have a connection, either people who worked here or whose parents worked here.”

The New Holland location of CNH operates a tour center and company store on site that caters to the curious. The center offers guided walking tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. and the company store is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the same days.
