Twin Valley High School (TVHS) will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” as its spring musical. Show dates and times are Friday, April 10, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 11, at noon and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 12, at 2 p.m. On April 11, there will be a special “Royal Brunch” prior to the noon show at 10:30 a.m.
TVHS performed “Cinderella” in 2012, but this year it is staging the Broadway revival. “There is the original Rodgers and Hammerstein, a revival that was the enhanced edition and then they did the movie with Brandy and Whitney Houston,” explained Nicole Weaver, producer. “In 2012, they did another revision, and that is (what is being featured at TVHS). This is the Broadway edition.”
She noted that this year’s version adds in new characters and songs to the original musical that helps tell an additional story along with the popular love story of Prince Topher and Cinderella. “We did the enhanced version in 2012, so when we decided we wanted to do ‘Cinderella’ again, we saw this version, which is newer,” said Weaver.
This year’s show is being directed by Jessie Sanders, who also directed in 2012. “It’s not repeating a show,”

It’s been a cold winter, but the Great Marsh Institute (GMI) wants to hit the ground running in spring.
Registration is currently underway for the third annual Great Marsh Mud Mosey, which is slated to be held on Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at GMI, 34 Moores Road, Elverson.
The event, which is being presented by both GMI and ChesCo Search Dogs, will feature a 5K run,
1-mile walk and a hike. There is a cost to register.
“We’re all excited for year three,” said Keith Studnick, the race director and president of ChesCo Search Dogs. “I think we’ve gotten it down pat in terms of race-day operations and having all our volunteers lined up.”
Runners and walkers of any pace are invited to take part in the 5K or walk, both of which will travel a relatively flat terrain of grass, gravel, marsh and mud, Studnick said.

The races are limited to 120 participants due to parking restrictions. Packet pickup will take place starting at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. Attendees will receive their packets as they drive onto the property.
At last year’s event, runners and walkers dealt with snowy conditions and 40 mph windsthe former of which truly put the “mud” in the Great Marsh Mud Mosey.
“That snow completely surprised us,” Studnick said. “We’ve had two really rough years weather wise; (we’re) hoping this year we can get decent weather.”
GMI forged a partnership with ChesCo when it allowed the nonprofit K-9 training organization to use its property for practice search missions. Studnick’s dog, Hunter, is a search dog himself. Hunter is reprising his role as
the “bark starter” for the race. The 9-yearold golden retriever was recently diagnosed with cancer but is recovering well from chemotherapy treatments, Studnick said.

“He’s still training every Sunday for the search and rescue team,” Studnick said. “We treat him like nothing’s happened to him … if you saw him, you wouldn’t even know.”
Following the race, pulled pork sandwiches/platters and woodfired pizza will be available. The sandwiches will be made using pork that was raised on GMI’s farm property - as close from farm to table as you can get. Additionally, both Stable 12 Brewing Co. and Big Rack Spirits will provide postrace refreshments.

“We used to have a food truck that we would give everyone a $5 coupon for,” Studnick said. “We have a chef that lives on the property, and then they also have this awesome huge pizza oven.” Also in post-race festivities, a DJ will provide music, and environmental biologists will be available to talk about the property’s unique plants and wildlife, much of which is along the 5K course. ChesCo’s dogs will also perform demonstrations.
The 5K race will be timed; the top three male and female finishers will receive prizes, provided by REI. There are no personal pets allowed on the property.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) recently announced that Penn State Berks chancellor and dean Radha Pyati will receive the group’s Take the Lead Berks Award during a ceremony on Tuesday, April 14, at Redner’s Event Center in Reading. Honorees for the award are leaders in both their professional industries and communities, serving as positive role models for Girl Scouts in Berks County through their careers and dedication to local causes they support.
In her role as chancellor and dean at Penn State Berks, Pyati is responsible for supervising all aspects of college administration, including academic programs; student affairs; diversity, equity and inclusion; and more. As the first female chancellor of Penn State Berks since 2011, she is focused on creating equal opportunities for female students and faculty, frequently participating in the Penn State Emerging Leadership program to build strong academic pathways and champion professional development for women in the community.
In the community, Pyati is a member of the board of directors of the Greater Reading Chamber

Alliance, where she holds the role of treasurer, and serves on the board of its affiliate, the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce & Industry. She serves on the board of the Berks County Workforce Development and Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, and she recently joined the board of the United Way of Berks County. Beyond acknowledging women leaders in the region, Take the Lead is a leadership opportunity for Girl Scouts. As part of the program, high school-age Girl Scouts are paired with each honoree to shadow them for a day at their professional work setting to gain impactful career and leadership insights, as well as receive guidance on building their own professional networks. The girls, who are selected through
a competitive application and interview process, then creatively reflect on the experience and deliver presentations at the Take the Lead event. Girl Scouts will also serve in a variety of roles at the April 14 award ceremony.
Girl Scout Kayla K., a Tulpehocken Area High School junior, spent Feb. 10 shadowing Pyati to learn about a day in the life of a chancellor.

“Cinderella”
Weaver pointed out. “The revival is vastly different. There are different characters and songs, and the plot is different. There are some fundamental changes.”
For example, Prince Topher is a more prominent character. “In ‘Cinderella,’ the enhanced version, the prince is a sort of stock character. In this one, he has his own story arc,” said Weaver. “He is trying to figure out who he is, and (he and Cinderella) find each other. It becomes more about Cinderella helping him find himself, too.”
While the musical does not include the prince’s parents, it features a new character named Jean-Michel. “He is a revolutionary in the town,” Weaver explained. “(The prince) has a regent who is running the country until he is of age, and he is corrupt. He is taxing the villagers into oblivion, and Jean-Michel is rising up and saying this is not OK.”
While the musical features two stepsisters, one of them is kind. “In this one, only one stepsister is truly vain and bad,” said Weaver. “The other one falls in love with Jean-Michel.”
Weaver said that audiences will enjoy the new version of the traditional love story. “It is a breath of fresh air into ‘Cinderella.’ If you know the story and grew up seeing
the Julie Andrews version, then the Brandy version, this is a whole new telling that gives new life and love into the show,” Weaver stated. “I love how it updates the story and brings in new elements and characters. It’s been challenging for (the cast), but it is very interesting and a very cool update.”
She added that audiences will enjoy the music, the dance numbers and the sets, which include a wooden pumpkin carriage and two full-size wooden horses designed by Ken Reinert, a master craftsman, who is also the stage director along with Adam Sanders.
Other production staff members include Christina Breidinger and Lydia Blankenbiller, choral directors; Mike Lydon, production assistant; Pat Meals, light and sound technician; Anne Reinert, props manager; and Tonna Dieter, props manager.
Featured cast members are Mark Conlow, Prince Topher; Sienna Brown, Cinderella; Cecilia Skoniczin, Marie, the Fairy Godmother; Grace Kelly, Madame; Lilliana Stellini, Gabrielle; Mila Falcon, Charlotte; Jacob Ignacio, Sebastian; Misan Onofomi, Jean-Michel; and Logan Loncaric, Lord Pinkerton.
In addition to the performances, new this year will be the Royal

“Little girls and boys can come with their families. We will have ‘Cinderella’-themed activities,” Sanders said, noting children are invited to attend in costume. “Cinderella will come out and take pictures with the kids. There will also be a meet-and-greet with the characters.”
Tickets will not be sold at the door. Ticket reservations will be accepted up until the day of the event, unless sold out.
