Sharing Love: One Lasagna At A Time BY FRANCINE FULTON

Busy moms, families affected by COVID-19, teachers, first responders and others are invited to request a complimentary dinner from Lasagna Love, a national organization that matches people in need of a homecooked meal with a volunteer home cook. Individuals can also anonymously nominate a friend, family member or neighbor who they believe would enjoy a lasagna. Lasagna Love is a national group composed of approximately 24,000 volunteers. Locally, there is a Lasagna Love group in Chester County, which is headed up by regional leader Lynn Engle. See Lasagna Love pg 3

MCC Sets Easter Egg Hunts, Services BY FRANCINE FULTON

CC (Moving Communities to Christ) will host Easter egg hunts at its Elverson and Birdsboro church campuses on Saturday, April 3. Children up to age 12 are welcome to participate. No preregistration is required. The Birdsboro egg hunt will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the church parking lot, 144 S. Walnut St., Birdsboro. The Elverson egg hunt will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the church, 4221 Main St.,

Elverson, as well as the adjacent field along Route 23. The rain date for both events is Saturday, April 10. Egg hunt organizer Jill Dunn, MCC family ministry director, explained that this is the first time that an egg hunt will be held at the Birdsboro campus, which opened in August of 2020. “For both campuses, (different) age groups will go (to hunt for eggs) one at time so if families have children of different ages, they will be able to watch all their kids do the scramble,” she said. “For the

Elverson campus, (we will have) over 15,000 eggs. Our goal for Birdsboro is 3,500 (eggs).” The Elverson egg hunt has been an annual event, with the exception of 2020, when it was canceled due to the pandemic. This year, the Elverson egg hunt will be offered for children in five age groups: 0 to 24 months, ages 2 to 3, ages 4 to 6, ages 7 to 9 and ages 10 to 12. “Since our Birdsboro campus is smaller, we decided to go with three age groups up to age 12,” Dunn pointed out. hunt will be asked to return their plastic eggs, which will be filled with candy, toys and stickers. “All the toys and candy will be age appropriate,” Dunn noted. In addition to the egg hunts, MCC will host its annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, April 4, from 7:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Elverson location. The menu will include pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and more. This year, the food will be served cafeteria-style in the church gymnasium. Takeouts will also be available.

We want to celebrate with everybody as they complete their 5K,” said Cavallero. “It’s a big accomplishment.” Those who register by Sunday, April 4, will receive a discount and will be guaranteed a special commemorative Run for Good T-shirt. The registration cost will increase on Monday, April 5, and then shirts will only be available on a first-come, first-served basis. T-shirts can be picked up on Healthy Kids Day, set this year for April 24, or at a local branch after that date. Healthy Kids Day is an annual YGBW event, but it was canceled last year because of the pandemic. “ We are going to hold it this year at four of our branches,” noted Cavallaro. “It’s essentially an event to encourage parents to keep children active all summer long. We usually have

moon bounces, police come and give motivational talks and there are group exercise classes. It’s a free event.” She added that details for Health Kids Day are still being finalized. “It’s a little different this year, so it will be taking them longer to figure out what activities to have and do safely,” Cavallero noted. All proceeds from the Run for Good will benefit YGBW’s annual “CAMP-aign,” which is designed to ensure that every child in the community has the opportunity to attend YGBW’s summer camp program. Financial assistance is provided to ensure no one is ever turned away from the Y due to an inability to pay. YGBW is working to raise at least $21,000 from the Run for Good, with additional fundraising efforts planned in support of its “CAMP-aign.” “ We are hoping for 300 runners or walkers,” said Cavallero, adding that YMCA branches are seeing an increase of activity by members. “We are really excited to see a change and to be planning events. It’s refreshing.” The YGBW includes the following branches: Brandywine YMCA, Jennersville YMCA, Kennett Area YMCA, Lionville Community YMCA, Octorara YMCA Program Center, Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center, Upper Main Line YMCA and West Chester Area YMCA. neighbor or a stranger,” Engle shared. “It’s like your neighbor made you dinner.” The lasagna is delivered at a mutually convenient time, and non-contact deliveries are encouraged. “I text (the recipient) and tell them ‘I am your lasagna maker, and I will leave it (at your house) and text you when it’s there,’” said Engle. “Some volunteers knock on the door and wait until the recipient comes and takes the food or wait in the car to make sure it gets picked up.” Engle emphasized that lasagnas are not just for low-

“My husband and I were volunteering at the local food pantry and because of the pandemic, we could not do that anymore because volunteers were not allowed. It was frustrating not being able to help,” said Engle, explaining why she became part of the group. “I joined in August of 2020. We have about 140 volunteers.” The national organization was started in April 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic by Rhiannon Menn of California, who wanted to help those who had lost their job or were afraid or unable to leave their homes. As part of the program, those who would like to request a lasagna or nominate a friend to receive a lasagna can sign up at www.lasagnalove.org. “The person who is nominated would get an email and it says, ‘You have been nominated; here is how you accept,’” Engle explained. “It directs them to the website, and they complete the process.” Those who would like to cook lasagnas are also invited to register at the website. “I have some volunteers who sign up just for one time. Some people sign up for once a month,” Engle noted. “The most active person I have (makes) five lasagnas a week.” She noted that it is important that the lasagnas be homemade and not storebought. “Rhiannon, the founder, feels very strongly that (homemade food) is the ‘love’ part of Lasagna Love. Action-Impact To Present Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Action-Impact, a nonprofit Christian youth organization located at 80 Vickery Lane, Elverson, will present an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 3, at 10 a.m. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade will be invited to search the property for plastic colored eggs, which will be filled with candy. There will also be an opportunity for both children and adults to win prizes. “We hope to put out 3,000 to 5,000 eggs,” said Ron Pershall, who leads the all-volunteer Action-Impact staff. “We had donations of candy from R.M. Palmer, Lerro’s, Zitner and Goldenberg to fill the eggs, plus prizes, which include candy that is too big for the plastic eggs.” There will also be an egg hunt for parents. Select eggs will contain prizes, including gift cards for several lunches and a dinner at Olive Garden. Children should bring their own baskets or containers for the eggs. “Everyone is lined up and ready to go (at 10 a.m.). Children (will go) first by ages and then the parents,” Pershall noted. The Easter egg hunt will be held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the hunt will move indoors. Also on April 3, the site’s new Junior Action Clubhouse for youths in third through fifth grades will be open. Interesting facts about quilts were featured during a program titled “The History of Quilting” presented on March 14 by Becky Hughes of the Hopewell Quilters, a group of quilting enthusiasts who meet at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson. The PowerPoint program, sponsored by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace, was held virtually via Zoom. “Quilting dates way back in time. In 770 to 221 B.C., (there is evidence of) Chinese quilts in tombs,” Hughes said. “(In Europe) they used to quilt on suits of armor.” She explained that quilting was used under the armor to keep it from rusting and for comfort.

European settlers brought quilting to America, and quilting bees became popular in the 19th century. A quilt includes three main parts - a top, backing and batting in between. Quilters make stitches that hold all three layers together. “Today, quilting can be done on machines and it goes a lot faster than quilting by hand,” Hughes noted. Hughes displayed photos of several types of quilts, including a Sunbonnet Sue quilt, which features a girl named Sue in a sunbonnet hat made in the 1920s, and crazy quilts, which do not have a specific pattern. There are also art quilts, which are designed specifically as wall hangings, as well as yo-yo quilts, which are made from scrap pieces of fabric that can be pulled into circular rosettes. Hughes displayed a quilt made from a feed sack that she purchased at a flea market. All quilts should be kept from direct sun to prevent fading. “If it is a newer quilt and it won’t fall apart, you can wash

Every student who enters the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) Adult Tutoring Program has a goal. Whether the goal is improving their Englishspeaking skills, passing the GED (General Educational Development) tests or seeking a better job, their objectives can often be better achieved with the help of a volunteer tutor. The Chester County OIC Adult Tutoring Program currently has a need for volunteers who are willing to work with an adult student for a total of three hours per week. The meetings usually take place in two 90-minute sessions. A four-year college degree is required to tutor, but a teaching background is not needed. Chester County OIC, a nonprofit organization serving all of Chester County, provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. In operation since 1979, Chester County OIC helps more than 800 adults per year. “Our program is based at the Chester County Library in Exton, with whom we have a long partnership,” noted Debbie Rikess, Adult Tutoring Program coordinator. She noted that because of the pandemic, most tutor pairs are working virtually right now via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp and other platforms. As the weather turns warmer, she anticipates that some pairs will meet outdoors. “We recently had three new tutors join our program. Cindy is working with Sofia, who is from Mexico. Her goal is to improve her English so that she can get a better job,” noted Rikess. “Theresa is working with a young woman named Susan on earning her GED (diploma). Susan recently passed one of the four sections, and they are now working on the science unit.” The third new tutor is Kathy, who started working with Paula at the beginning of February.

West Chester University (WCU) has earned the 2021-22 Military Friendly School designation and has advanced to Gold status in recognition of leading practices, outcomes, and effective programs for members of the military and veterans enrolled at the university. West Chester is one of only six universities in Pennsylvania that earned the Gold designation. Military Friendly measures an organization’s commitment, effort, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefits for the military community. ALAN F. ELLIS Alan F. Ellis spent his last days with a smile, surrounded by family, laughter, good food, and classical music. He was born in New Castle, PA on June 21, 1936 to G. Ross and Esther (Fell) Ellis of New Wilmington, PA. He attended Westminster College, where he met Elizabeth M. (McGill) Ellis, who became his wife of 64 years. Alan continued his education at the University of Illinois, with a PhD in Chemistry, and later an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a research chemist, working for Gulf and Chevron Chemical Companies. After retiring from Chevron, Alan moved to Barto, PA where he volunteered for the American Red Cross of the Lehigh Valley. In recognition of his service, he received the Clara Barton Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership. Al had a dry sense of humor, often surprising listeners with his one-line zingers and clever puns. Other lifelong hobbies included remodeling every house he owned, amateur theater, hiking, nature photography, and cooking. His life could be summed up by the text of his favorite T-shirt: Stay calm and Grandpa will fix it. Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Lisa Betz of Morgantown, PA, Jodi Ellis of Dillon, CO, and Megan Frazier of Kingwood, TX, a brother, George Ellis of Bloomington, IN, and two sisters, Mary Ann Bridenbaugh of Healdsburg, CA and Elizabeth Hines of New Wilmington, PA. There are four grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held at the Salem Bible Church Cemetery in Macungie. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings.
