“We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,â€? said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand ‌ if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.â€?

When Twin Valley High School (TVHS) social studies teacher Caroline McRobbie attended the Pennsylvania Association for Student Councils (PASC) state conference in Johnstown, she heard the term “philanthroteens,� a word coined to describe current high school students who are committed to community service.

McRobbie, the TVHS Student Council adviser, decided to bring this concept to TVHS by leading a Day of Service on Feb. 27. Projects completed during the day included making springtime cards, small gifts and decorations for residents of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook and writing thank you notes for high school custodial staff members and district bus drivers.

To prepare for the day, TVHS Student Council members were asked to work in pairs to develop community service opportunities and then prepare everything they needed for their particular projects. “I compiled project ideas on my teacher Pinterest account, which was shared with the Student Council members,� explained McRobbie. “From there, partners could select any project they liked, or they could brainstorm new ideas, which were approved by myself or an executive board member.

We wanted to make sure there was a variety of project styles and groups that would be benefiting from these efforts.�

Along with the Student Council, the TVHS National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, HOSA and Leo Club came together to create 39 project “rooms.� Student Council executive See TVHS pg 5

North Star Initiative Welcomes HBFP Seeks Food Donations Community To The Battle Even though it has postponed its popular March Madness food drive, the Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP) is continuing to serve residents in need through its regularly scheduled food distributions.

The HBFP is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Community members are invited to help out the pantry by donating nonperishable food items. Items will be accepted on the day of the next scheduled distribution on Wednesday, March 25, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Additionally, donations will be accepted between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 27, and Wednesday, April 1.

The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community.

In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice.

Beginning on March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only.

This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also shop prior to any other customers entering. Although team members will not request ID for entry, the company asks its customers to respect the purpose of the early opening.

Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products.

The Giant Company continues to offer delivery and pickup through Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct. Available slots are limited, and the company is working to expand capacity.

Currently, only contactless deliveries are available to all customers in all areas until further notice. Contactless delivery means that the driver will practice social distancing during the delivery process.

Panelists who are lined up to take part in this year’s event are psychologist Dr. Angel Daniels, who specializes in complex trauma, including human trafficking; Jennifer Kosakevitch, Human Trafficking Task Force coordinator for eastern Pennsylvania; Heather Castellino, Pennsylvania deputy attorney general; Michelle Gehman, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn Lancaster; and Derek Thompson, executive director of Abolition Men. According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to educate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “How are individuals lured into trafficking?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs

in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. North Star operates The Harbor, a place where survivors of domestic sex trafficking can experience physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual care and support through a Christ-centered program. “The Harbor focuses on restoration and re-entry, coordinating the services needed to address physical, mental, legal, educational, and other issues relating to the time spent in the hands of traffickers,” said Esbenshade.

With a staff of 15, The Harbor provides around-the-clock care seven days a week. “We accept women 18 to 35 years of age,” said

Esbenshade, who noted that Harbor residents may be recommended by local and statewide law enforcement; through the National Trafficking Shelter Alliance, of which North Star is a member; or by self-referral through the website. North Star does not perform rescues, and women who take part in the program must be drug and alcohol free for 30 days before coming to The Harbor.

Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases. During the first three months, an initial assessment and orientation is completed. “We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The next three months are called the integration and preparation phase. “That’s where we use the created curriculum and an on-site school psychologist who does life skills training,”

said Esbenshade, who noted that budgeting is often part of the training. The next six months are considered the transitional phase, during which the resident completes the curriculum and begins working or going to school. “That’s the phase where they have more freedom to come and go, but there are still requirements such as a Celebrate Recovery program,” said Esbenshade. “The program is geared for a year, but a resident can stay up to two years.”

North Star also plans to hold a fundraiser, Tapas Shindig, on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Supply, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. The evening will include a silent auction, a video of a survivor’s story, and opportunities to donate.

Because of the coronavirus, the upcoming distribution on March 25 will be modified to minimize contact between volunteers and food recipients.

“ We have three concurrent problems - demand, inability to get the quantities of food we need from the grocers and the challenge of creating a distribution model with no human contact. (It’s) not easy,” Ross added.

However, the HBFP remains committed to helping those in need. “We plan to push forward … with largely outdoor and prepacked distributions of everything we can muster, both via the large, scheduled distributions

and meeting individual food emergencies,” Ross stated. “We are also attempting to maintain/increase the kids’ Backpack Program during the school shutdown.”

The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) presented County Bar Recognition Awards to the Chester County Bar Association during the 54th annual seminar of the Conference of County Bar Leaders in Hershey.

Recognized for its Bar Foundation Grant Awards and Gateway HorseWorks fundraiser, the Chester County Bar Association is one of 23 local bar associations in Pennsylvania honored this year for sponsoring projects that improve the legal profession, justice system or community. The awards are presented annually by the PBA. The Chester County Bar Foundation awarded grants to local

nonprofit organizations. All grants will help support the foundation’s mission to help Chester County citizens understand, gain access to and benefit from the legal system by providing support for community programs and services related to the law.

In addition, the Chester County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division held a happy hour at a local establishment and donated the proceeds to Gateway HorseWorks, a nonprofit that offers transformative equine-assisted psychotherapy services to children, adults and families in a healing, farm-based environment.

Leaders, whose membership includes leaders from county bar associations throughout the state and from the PBA, organizes a yearly educational conference focusing on the exchange of innovative bar association projects and ideas and on the development of mutually beneficial relationships among bar leaders that improve the legal profession. United Way of Chester County has launched the Chester County COVID-19 Response Fund, allowing the agency to rapidly deploy resources to community-based organizations that offer crucial support to families and individuals in need and to meet these organizations’ nonprofit needs to help them remain strong during this time.

United Way of Chester County and its partners will be best able to assist nonprofits and the people they serve by providing nonprofits with critical operating resources to respond to community need and by providing

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) will accept nominations for their Bringing Safety Home Award. The award recognizes outstanding efforts by a safety advocate who diligently promotes the importance of home fire sprinklers. According to NFPA research, the risk of dying in a reported home fire is 85 percent lower if sprinklers are present.

The Bringing Safety Home Award honors members of the fire service and other fire sprinkler advocates in North America who use HFSC educational material, NFPA data, and NFPA Fire Sprinkler Initiative resources to educate decision makers on home fire sprinklers. These efforts are aimed at educating the public and policy makers to increase the use of home fire sprinklers in new homes. The award winner will receive a $1,000 grant to further fire sprinkler advocacy and educational efforts in their area.

Administration approved our request to reserve that Thursday’s flex period to hold various service projects.�

The leadership and board of directors of Brandywine Health Foundation canceled the annual garden party, which had been scheduled for May 20, due to the concerns about the community spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus.) As a philanthropic health organization, the foundation’s primary concern is for the wellbeing of all individuals in the community, which demands that necessary steps be taken to limit the risk of potential exposure to and spread of the virus.

Through the donation of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McNeil’s home as the event venue, the garden party engages more than 500 people in support of the Brandywine Health Foundation’s overall mission. In fact, since 2003, the foundation and its volunteer committee have raised over $1 million.

Vanessa B. Briggs, president and CEO of the Brandywine Health Foundation, will shortly announce the creation of a special Relief Impact Fund. Working with nonprofit partners, medical personnel and the county, the goal of the Relief Impact Fund will be to help minimize the economic hardship and disruption of safety-net services on the community.

noted that parents of mentees sometimes request a mentor who has the energy to keep up with the mentee. “For younger (boys), the parents sometimes ask for a gentleman in his 20s or 30s who is active,” said Pankratz. “A lot of our boys enjoy sports and video games,” said Pankratz. “Parents ask for an adult male that can connect (with) and do those

Charis Pankratz, director of mentoring and education with CrossNet Ministries, wants to make it clear that age is not a factor in the organization’s mentoring program, which serves children in the ELANCO School District from second grade and up.

“We love (adult) mentors of all ages,” said Pankratz. “We have children matched very well currently with older adults, and they can really benefit from that different perspective.”

The program, which is designed to match volunteer adult mentors with ELANCOarea students, requires that mentors complete background checks and attend a free three-hour training session. Mentors and mentees are asked to meet together twice a month. Pankratz noted there are specific characteristics that help foster a good mentoring relationship. “We are looking for people who are willing to come alongside someone and (provide) emotional support,” she said. “(Mentors should) offer a nonjudgmental listening ear, support and encouragement, but not necessarily advice.”

CrossNet works to help mentors as they seek to connect with their mentees. “CrossNet does a lot to support our mentors, such as ongoing training sessions, and I am available for questions and concerns,” said Pankratz, who noted that the organization also holds events monthly for mentors and mentees to get together.

“They are free or very low cost,” said Pankratz, who noted that the events are often held at CrossNet or somewhere in the ELANCO area. In February,

CrossNet held a service night for mentors and mentees to bake cookies for the Welsh Mountain Home (WMH). More than 20 people took part in the program, which included eating pizza before baking and decorating cookies and packaging the treats with notes for WMH residents.

“Mentors and mentees can spend time in the community doing whatever the two of them want to do,” said Pankratz. “It’s their time, their schedules. It can be evenings or weekends.”

Pankratz noted that the program is flexible, which makes it easier for those who work during the day. She also noted that mentors need not live within the ELANCO area but that it helps to live nearby. Pankratz added that the mentor and mentee can choose the types of activities they like to do together. “They can do things the mentor enjoys, learn a new skill together, or the mentor can learn something from the mentee,” said Pankratz, who suggested canoeing, shopping, visiting a gym, taking walks, or getting coffee as possible activities. “Mentors are financially responsible for the time with their mentee,” shared Pankratz. “We don’t ask mentees to pay for anything.”

The CrossNet mentoring program has been serving the community for about a decade, and Pankratz stated that currently there are 36 active mentor matches in the program. “After one year, we do a checkup to see if it’s still a beneficial relationship,” said Pankratz, who added that some mentors and mentees have been meeting for seven years. “(They can continue meeting) as long as it is beneficial,” she said.

On a crisp Saturday morning at the end of January, more than 20 Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) volunteers and a few members of area emergency medical services (EMS) companies met in the training room at the GSFR station, located at 339 E. Main St., New Holland.

The room smelled strongly of coffee as the volunteers filed in to take their seats. Jayne Miller, WellSpan Philhaven mental health community education coordinator, introduced herself and her team of trainers to the

group. The group was gathering for a daylong program in Mental Health First Aid designed to teach the volunteers about confronting mental health issues on the job while also working to reduce the stigma associated with those issues.

Miller explained Mental Health First Aid by comparing it to physical first aid. “Think about CPR and learning techniques to help save a life or recognize that someone is in medical need and step in, then take that model and flip it into a psychological approach,” she said. “We will recognize when someone has the

onset of mental health symptoms and know how to respond and maybe save a life.” Miller said that the program covered signs and symptoms of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse disorder, suicidal behavior, and non-suicidal self-injury. “It’s nice to be on this side and recognize when somebody might be experiencing some of these before it ends up in a crisis,” Miller said.

The program is also designed to help the volunteers recognize mental health issues in themselves and their fellow volunteers. “Those tools will be good on the job, but also with helping each other,” said Miller. “When we’re in jobs where people are witnessing trauma, (Mental Health First Aid) will set the stage for us to deal with our own responses.”

Miller noted that during the 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. training, her team works to break down false beliefs. “We spend time trying to reduce stigma that is associated with mental health concerns,” she said. “We get people talking and more comfortable.”

According to Miller, the team points out that the brain is an organ like the other organs in the body and should receive treatment when necessary in the same way other organs do.

Jayne Miller, WellSpan Philhaven mental health community education coordinator, introduced a number of Garden Spot Fire Rescue volunteers and a few emergency medical technicians to Mental Health First Aid during a presentation held at the fire company on Jan. 25.

In addition to providing training for fire companies and EMS, the team works with police departments, state probation and parole, libraries, retirement communities, colleges, and high schools. “There’s a broad spectrum,” said Miller, adding that her team has worked with large corporations and is preparing a program for resident doctors working in hospital settings.

Toward that end, retired police captain John Cooney traveled from Troy, N.Y., to take part.

Cooney talked about his own experience with post-traumatic stress disorder and how seeking help changed his life.

GSFR Chief Darryl Keiser credited GSFR director of development Daryl Groff with suggesting the training. “After facing the loss of a brother firefighter, who decided to take his own life, … it became apparent to us as a department that we needed to take a closer look and be better prepared for the stresses and trauma that members face … and the emotional toll that takes on a first responder’s mental and emotional well-being,” said Keiser. “The firehouse and its members are a second family, and we need to have each other’s backs both on the emergency scene and back at the station. Our ability to recognize when one of our family is struggling needed to be improved, and we felt this training would give us those tools.”

Meet The Good Citizens

Each high school senior who was presented a Good Citizens Award from the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was given an opportunity to talk about some of their experiences at school and with community service, along with their future plans, as part of a ceremony held on March 9 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester.

“These students are very bright, and they are very multitalented,” said Beverly Lawler, chairperson of the Good Citizens Committee.

Ralph Lintelman from B. Reed Henderson High School talked about his desire to become an

oncologist, a goal he set after his aunt was diagnosed with cancer.

“Since fifth grade, my goal was to become an oncologist to help others going through the same battle that my family went through,” he stated. He plans to attend Penn State University to study biomedical engineering and then attend medical school.

Nina Nsereko from Bayard Rustin High School talked about her involvement with Girl Scouts and as a volunteer at Chester County Hospital, noting that her parents are her biggest support system. “I try to be supportive of the Girl Scouts and for the patients - those who do not have families to be there for them,” she stated.

han High School talked about her volunteer work with Student Council and as a math tutor. “It’s important for me to teach each student the material necessary to achieve their goals,” she said. “Nothing makes me happier when they come to me with a big smile after they do well on an exam.”

Matthew Conroy from Chester County Technical College (TC) High School - Brandywine Campus shared with the group his future goals. “I am in the Health Career Pathways program at TC Brandywine, and I want to be a nurse practitioner in the future to specialize in trauma (care),” he said.

Matthew plans to attend Delaware County Community College and enroll in the nursing program.

Hannah Brostrom from Downingtown High School West plans to study computer science after graduation. “I also have a love of writing,” she shared. “I just finished my first novel and hopefully someday will get that published.”

Kira Rybarczyk from Kennett Consolidated High School talked about her involvement in the Society of Women Engineers Club and its annual STEM Night. “STEM Night was created to give young Kennett students an opportunity to explore what STEM is about and do hands-on activities and watch demonstrations,” she stated. “As a volunteer, I worked at a build-your-own catapult station (using) popsicle sticks and marshmallows. I wanted to demonstrate that school can also be lots of fun.”

“I love the outdoors and photography,” said Joseph Pizolato from Octorara Junior-Senior High School. “I spend weekends getting lost in the woods.” He plans to study biology with a goal of pursuing a career in wildlife preservation.

Cameo Powell from Oxford Area High School talked about her weeklong mission trip to Mexico. “It was very immersive, and I learned so much,” she said.

“I realized how much can be done, not only physically, but to make connections with people.”

Those who were unable to attend the ceremony were Cole Walker from Avon Grove High School, Kaia Morse from Coatesville Area Senior High School and David Akins from Unionville High School.

The 15th annual Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) watershed photo contest is now underway.

Photo submissions are being accepted until Tuesday, March 31.

Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate to win cash prizes and to have their photos featured in CBF publications.

CBF is seeking photographs that illustrate the positive aspects of the bay and its rivers and streams.

Images depicting people, wildlife, recreation and farms within the watershed will all be considered.

All photos must include water from the Chesapeake Bay or a river, stream, creek or other body of water in the watershed, to include Pennsylvania’s portion.

All winners will receive a oneyear CBF membership, and winning photos may be displayed on CBF’s website, in a CBF e-newsletter, in CBF’s 2021 calendar, and in CBF’s magazine, “Save the Bay.” Judging will be conducted by a panel of CBF employees on the basis of subject matter, composition, focus, lighting, uniqueness and impact. Members of the public will also be able to vote online for their favorite photo in the Viewers’ Choice Gallery starting Monday, April 6.
