While people in need around the world receive warmth and a sense of security in the form of comforters made by the Neighbors Caring and Sharing women’s fellowship group, the group hopes that the colorful fabric quilts will also let them know that they are not forgotten. Members of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, which meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, gathered on March 12 to knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. The women completed the project under the guidance of sisters Krista Petersheim and Carmen Weber, who provided nearly completed comforters consisting of a piece of material on top, batting in the middle and more fabric on the back. Members of the Neighbors group then used heavy thread to knot the

three layers of fabric together to make the final quilted product. “We use cotton crochet thread, which is easier to thread (through a needle) than yarn,” said Petersheim, noting that during the course of the recent meeting, the women knotted 11 comforters. Additionally, the women added drawstrings to small bags made by Weber, which are filled with various items before being shipped out of the country. “MCC fills them with school supplies, sewing supplies or health supplies,” said Tina Essick, program chairman for the Neighbors group, noting that comforters and bags will be taken to MCC in Akron for distribution. “They will send (the comforters and kit bags) wherever there is a need.” Essick added that the comforters are used by the recipients to keep warm or as room dividers for refugees who live in tents. They also go to sites of natural disasters both in the United States and See Comforters pg 8
