PHA Presents Donation To Ryerss Farm By Francine Fulton
HISTORY TALK
As part of its mission to provide support to equine-related needs in the community, the Brandywine Valley chapter of the Professional Horsemen’s Association (PHA) recently presented Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines with a $1,000 donation. Ryerss Farm, a nonprofit organization located on 387 acres in Pottstown, is home to 80 retired and rescued horses. To reside at the farm, horses must be over the minimum age of 20. “In order to keep costs down and to be more self-sustainable, a portion of the property is farmed for hay and straw. This year, due to an unusually wet season, their straw crop failed, and they were forced to solicit additional donations to cover the cost of purchasing replacement straw,” explained PHA member Jennifer Yoder. “At the
January meeting, the club unanimously voted to send a $1,000 donation to help, because without horses, there would be no horsemen.” PHA members and club officers presented the donation to Ryerss Farm animal welfare manager Amber Slaymaker and weekend caregiver Erin Renski on Feb. 24. During their visit, PHA members were given a tour of the farm and were able to meet many of the residents. “Reading the history of each resident that is mounted on their stalls was fascinating and heartbreaking at times,” noted Yoder. “Some are brought in by their caring owners, some are rescues and some are retired from equine careers.” Ryerss, located at 1710 Ridge Road, Pottstown, is open for visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are also needed. For more information, readers may call 610-469-0533. Those who would like to donate to the Straw See PHA pg 3

Glen Moore United Methodist Presentation Will Focus On Welcomes New Pastor Art Of Myrtle Tremblay By Ann Mead Ash
By Francine Fulton
The Rev. John Neider, the new pastor of Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC), believes that a pastor should be more than the person who leads Sunday worship services. That is why when Ash Wednesday is observed each year, no matter where he is serving as pastor, Neider can be found distributing “Ashes to Go” to residents at different locations throughout the day, including at the Thorndale train station and in the borough of Downingtown. In 1952, Myrtle Tremblay and her husband, Louis, moved to New Holland when Louis secured a job with New Holland Machine. Tremblay was an established painter when she came to New Holland, but when she discovered the bucolic scenes of eastern Lancaster County, her art took a different turn. “Myrtle Tremblay - An Ever-Changing Scene” will be presented in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. The presentation will be given by Win Reber, president of the GSV Art Guild, in partnership with the New Holland Area Historical Society. Reber will delve into the evolution of Tremblay’s paintings with regard to styles, subjects, and See Myrtle Tremblay pg 6
