Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, will be the site of a meeting of Senior Connections on Thursday, March 12.

The event will begin with a free meal at noon, followed by the program “Wisdom From the Trail,� which will be presented by Lois and Ernie Hess. The couple worked to complete their dream of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine by the time they reached age 75. They will share glimpses of the journey, including photos and stories of beauty, challenges, obstacles and learning along the way, as well as God’s provisions for them. Twin Valley High School To Stage “Newsies�

The Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Theater Arts program will present “Newsies,� a high-energy show about the newsboys’ strike of 1899, as its spring musical. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 19, 20 and 21, as well as 2 pm. on Sunday, March 22. “Newsies,� set in New York City, tells the story of Jack Kelly (junior Conner Lawler) and his ragtag team of newsboys who make a meager living selling newspapers on the city streets. But when the prices of “papes,� as the newsboys call them, are hiked, the newsies form a union and organize a strike against the greedy publisher of the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer (senior Reid Simmons).

reporter Katherine Plummer (sophomore Elise Leid), show the strength that young people can have when they join together and stand up against injustice. “Audience members will really get a feel for what life was like during the 1899 newsboy strike, and they will leave the performance feeling empowered,� said Jessie Miller, show producer. “Newsies� was a 1992 movie starring Christian Bale, Robert Duvall and Ann-Margret. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and music by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, it was adapted to the stage and was on Broadway from 2012 to 2014. In addition to an open house, a book fair and special activities for students and staff members, the Home and School Association at Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) partnered with Cozies 4 Chemo to complete a service project during Catholic Schools Week (CSW). Students in each classroom worked together to make more than 30 blankets for Cozies 4 Chemo, which will distribute them to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will host the 13th annual Irish breakfast buffet at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, on Saturday, March 21, from 7 a.m. to noon. Students at Conestoga Christian School (CCS) in Morgantown showcased their talents in areas such as digital photography, structural design, desktop publishing and more during the Technology Student Association (TSA) Region 2 competition held Feb. 8 at Conestoga Valley Middle School in Lancaster.

At the event, CCS students competed against approximately 28 middle and high schools in Region 2, which consists of schools in southeastern Berks County and Lebanon and Lancaster counties. Their projects were judged by faculty, parents and representatives from local colleges.

The CCS TSA chapter is composed of middle and high school students who meet during a class four days each week as well as after school to design projects for the competition. “They pick their own projects,” noted club adviser Larry Everhart, CCS technology instructor.

CCS students chose projects such as creating carbon dioxidepowered pinewood race cars for the Dragster Design category. “On the cars, there is a cartridge with a little container of carbon dioxide under a lot of pressure. When they race, there is a device that punctures the seal of the cartridge so the carbon dioxide escapes, and it propels the dragster forward at

speeds up to 60 miles per hour,” explained Everhart, noting that the cars compete on a raised track. “There is track that is 4 feet off the ground and about 100 feet long. There are two eyelets under each dragster, and (the students) feed fish line through so the dragster can’t fly off the track and injure somebody.”

For the Flight category, middle school students created a balsa wood glider launched from a catapult and high school students created a rubber powered model airplane built to event specifications.

In the Children’s Stories category, students were invited to create their own story accompanied by illustrations. “The point of that event is to show skill in desktop publishing,” Everhart noted.

The competition also featured a Technology Bowl, which is a written knowledge test taken by middle school and high school students. Students are scored individually and as a team. “The high school team of three placed seventh. That means we can enter a team at states,” Everhart said.

The TSA State Conference will be held at Seven Springs Resort from Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, April 17. “There will be close to 2,100 students from across the state competing at the same events,” said Everhart, noting that students

The weekend will kick off with a craft beer and food festival hosted at the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy small-plate pairings from area breweries and restaurants.

The festival will round out with music and games while guests view the helicopters throughout the museum.

On Saturday, April 25, guests will have time to explore the Brandywine Valley’s many featured local attractions. Four

different breweries will be featured on April 25 and 26. Tours will begin from one of four partner hotels throughout Chester County. On each tour, attendees will receive guided behind-thescenes experiences and a beer and snack pairing at every stop.

General admission passes for the weekend are being offered.

There are also a limited number of VIP passes, which will offer dedicated check-in at the festival, reserved seating on tour buses, admission to a VIP-only event with a question-and-answer session from the founder of TBA Brewery and a commemorative souvenir.

the community might like to see and what show was produced the previous year. “This year we wanted a show with a lot of highenergy ensemble numbers because our show last year (‘The Addams Family’) was a little on the dark side,” said Miller. “And we knew we had a huge cast coming up.”

Rehearsals started in October 2019. “This is a change from what we have done in the past, but the students started learning the songs and dances even before auditions,” Miller said. “This has helped tremendously to get the students prepared.”

Miller said that the cast has been busy learning the dance routines. “This is an extremely dance-heavy show. The dance numbers are very energetic, and we have 79 students that we have to put on the stage,” said Miller. “It’s the biggest cast we’ve ever had, and our

Support Groups Offered To Caregivers Green Hills Manor at The Heritage, the personal and memory care community on the campus of The Heritage of Green Hills, will host monthly support groups for caregivers of individuals suffering from dementia, as well as other debilitating diseases.

The groups are held on the third Wednesday of each month.

Upcoming dates include March 18 and April 15. The caregiver support groups take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Held in conjunction with the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, the sessions are free and open to the public.

All individuals who are caring for a loved one with any debilitating disease are welcome to attend the support group meetings.

The support groups will strive to provide a safe, confidential, supportive environment for participants to develop informal mutual support and social relationships, according to Melissa Oley, marketing and admissions liaison for Green Hills Manor.

The groups are also designed to educate participants about dementia and help them develop skills and confidence to meet caregiving challenges.

This is a milestone year for the historic site, as Smith and his wife, Ella Jane Grubb, celebrated the birth of their first child, Clement “Clemmy� Smith, in March of 1870. “This is a special year celebrating Clement’s birth, the Smiths’ first child, new beginnings and a celebration of the heritage that can be traced back to Ireland/Scotland in the 1500s,� said Flora, a Smith family descendant. She noted that the Smiths’ original name was MacDonald, but the family changed

The Chester County commissioners recently voted to appoint 15 individuals to the county’s new Environmental and Energy Advisory Board. The members of the board include Chester County residents along with representatives of businesses, energy initiatives, municipalities, land conservancies and county departments.

The role of the Environmental and Energy Advisory Board is to provide both reviews and recommendations to the commissioners and county departments that will include best environmental and energy practices in the areas of buildings, facilities and operations; fuels, vehicles and transportation; food; responsible purchasing; housing; energy sources; air quality; storm water management; natural resource protection; and climate change. One of the board’s top priorities is to establish a Climate Action Plan in the county.

Environmental efforts already underway by the county include a 15-year energy performance contract with energy service company Constellation that is implementing water and energy conservation measures within county facilities and that may save millions of dollars and help the county reach

Gehman graduated from Millersville in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in technology. He was working in the printing field and continuing to volunteer at Woodcrest when he began leading junior high school gym nights for TNT Youth ministry in Ephrata. “(TNT) was growing, and a position opened up for an assistant director,� recalled Gehman. He applied and was awarded the position around 2007. By 2015, he was working full time at TNT and serving as part-time youth pastor at Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl, and by 2018, he was working full time in youth ministry at Bethany.

“I love this ministry,� said Grant Gehman, referring to CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, an organization that includes a youth center, food and nutrition center, Power Packs affiliation, and free summer lunch program, among other community programs. “I have been a supporter (of CrossNet) for years.�

Now, Gehman gets to be a member of the CrossNet team as the new director of youth.

According to Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries, Gehman came to the job with a wealth of experience in youth ministry. “(Grant is) really gifted in empowering volunteers to serve and care for youths,� said Dahl. “ We are thrilled to have another person focus on youths in our community, which is so needed.�

Gehman said he has been involved in youth ministry for about 20 years. Originally from Bowmansville, Gehman began working as a camp counselor at

during 2019, Edwards was working half his hours with youths and the other half planning events for the ministry. “We realized we needed a person to oversee all our youth programs to bring some unity to the youth programs with oversight and vision,� said Dahl, who had known Gehman for several years because of his work for TNT. She explained that in his new role, Gehman will work to grow the programs to serve more area youths. “What I love is (what) this youth center gives to students who come from all sorts of backgrounds, including dysfunctional families, poverty, (and a) host of stressors and trauma,� said Gehman, who noted that the youth center aims to offer a safe refuge for participants. “I love that there’s a place they can go and just be (teenagers) and enjoy being themselves and have friendships. They don’t have to pretend to be something else, and they can hang out with adults who care about them and feed them.�

Looking ahead, Gehman is thinking about ways to expand youth ministry in the foreseeable future. “My mind is starting to dream about how we continue to do what we can do, but do it to the best of our ability to reach as many (youths) as we can,� he said. “All our programs are doing the best in their areas, but what does it look like for them to be synchronized and working together? It’s exciting to think about the impact that could have on students and families in this community.�

For the second consecutive year, students at Alvernia University, Reading, earned honors by the international English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, for their literary and artistic works in Zephyrus, the university’s literary arts journal.

Zephyrus claimed second place.

Alvernia’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta will receive the award in March, when they attend the 2020 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention in Las Vegas, Nev. They will present a panel titled “Transformative Landscapes in Dystopian Literature.�

Zephyrus is a student-run operation that includes soliciting submissions, editing, and assembling the hard copy. The editorial board encouraged peers to submit creative pieces that embodied the theme of the winning edition, “New Beginnings.� The submissions received included photographs, short stories, poems, and various other unique artworks that illustrated this idea.

Now is the time for nonprofit organizations in the community to apply for a grant from the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP). HBCP has posted an application for its Community Grant Program, now in its third year, on its website at www.hbpartnership.org. The theme for 2020 is “Community Enhancement.”

Grants for 2020 will be awarded to nonprofit organizations or individuals that sponsor projects designed to “mobilize the caring power of the Honey Brook community, create long-lasting change that improves people’s lives and provide for the basic human needs of area residents.”

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, April 1. Applicants will then be asked to present information about their intended use of the grant’s funds at the HBCP’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 15, at noon at the Heatherwood Retirement Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook.

Successful applicants will receive their awards at the HBCP’s Spring Social on Wednesday, April 22, at The Long Way Home Grill and Pub in Honey Brook Borough.

The HBCP raises monies for the grants through its membership dues and sponsorships from its main community event, Harmony Day. The event, held each September, is a community-wide celebration that offers activities at local businesses, the Honey Brook Fire Company and the Honey Brook Community Library. Residents also hold yard sales on Harmony Day. “We look for local businesses to sponsor Harmony Day, and that income is used for the grants as well as the scholarships that we give to Twin Valley High School students,” said Reuben Schonebaum, HBCP vice president.

The HBCP was established in 2008 as an association of businesses, interested residents and local government officials. Its mission statement is “to bring together borough and township

partners to facilitate communication, share resources and work together to enhance our community.

“Basically, we try to attract residents, attract shoppers and businesses,” Schonebaum said.

Individuals and companies do not have to be residents of Honey Brook Borough or Township to join. “A number of the members are members of organizations and businesses that serve the Honey Brook community but don’t necessary live in Honey Brook,” said Schonebaum.

Last year, the partnership awarded grants for youth-oriented projects. Recipients included the following: Twin Valley Community Education Foundation, which received a grant to support after-school tutoring for students and parents; the Hearts In Hands Community Center, which received a grant to provide stipends for counselors at its annual summer camp for at-risk children; Honey Brook Youth Center, which received a grant to help fund the camps and outdoor activities it provides Honey Brook youths throughout the summer; and the Honey Brook Food Pantry’s Under Four Nour-

ishment Program, which addresses food insecurity/malnutrition in the early years of life.

The grant was used to purchase food for the program.

In addition to nonprofit organizations, two individuals received grants last year - Griffin Goetz, a member of Boy Scout Troop 9, and Jamie Fox, a member of Girl Scout Troop 1517.

Griffin received a grant to build 18 mason bee houses that he placed along the walking trail at Living God Lutheran Church and the Honey Brook Community Library. Griffin explained that mason bees are productive pollinators for spring fruit trees and plants. Jamie’s grant, for her Girl Scout Silver Award, was used to help with projects at the Honey Brook Community Library, including improving the library’s back entry, refreshing the handicapped-accessible parking space and installing a brochure wall display for community handouts.

“Last year, the grant money was divided equally,” Schonebaum pointed out.

Historical Society To Offer Program On Wednesday, March 18, the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will sponsor the program “The Brownstown Mill Excavation” at Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata, at 7 p.m. The date of the program has been changed since originally scheduled.

The program will examine the findings of a study conducted in advance of the reconstruction of the bridge over the Conestoga River on West Farmersville Road near Brownstown. Michael Young of Stell Environmental Resources will report on the project.

A pair of grade school buddies who went on to found Victory Brewing Company have been chosen by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) for induction into the Chester County Business Hall of Fame.

Victory Brewing co-founders Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet will be honored at the CCEDC’s annual Business Achievement Award Dinner, which will be attended by more than 400 of the region’s top business leaders, on Wednesday, April 1, at the historic Phoenixville Foundry. Covaleski and Barchet trace their partnership back to 1973, when they met on a school bus as fifth-graders and became friends. They remained so, even as they grew up and went to college on opposite coasts.

Beer would bring them together as adults during friendly home brewing competitions that became so sophisticated, the pair decided to leave their corporate careers to study with the best in the brewing industry.

They brought that knowledge back home to Chester County to create Victory Brewing Company, which now employs more than 300 people in the state of Pennsylvania, including Downingtown, Parkesburg and Kennett Square. Victory’s expansion continues with plans to open another location at Philadelphia’s Logan Square later this year that is expected to add 100 full- and parttime jobs.

Victory Brewing Company’s success is also noteworthy in the communities it serves. The company organizes volunteer efforts throughout the year, including during last year’s Brandywine River Clean-Up with the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance. Victory employees also plant crops at Pete’s Produce Farm to benefit the Chester County Food Bank, which operates the Fresh2You mobile market that brings fresh local product to underserved communities in the area. In partnership with the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown, Victory has recently matched $3,500 in donations collected by its employees to provide gifts and gift cards for more than 30 children and their caregivers over the holidays.

Gary Smith, CCEDC president and CEO, reported that the CCEDC has been supporting Victory Brewing since 1995. Through its network of location services, CCEDC was able to assist Victory Brewing with securing its flagship brewery and restaurant in Downingtown at the site of the former Pepperidge Farm. CCEDC also facilitated a business loan to assist with equipment needs.
