There are always nine (flavors), so they have to take one away before they (introduce) a new one.” On a recent Sunday, Rebecca and fellow troop members Kelly Fox and

Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical production of “Cinderella” at Cavod Theatre, admits she has not always been a fan of fairy tales in recent years. “They were fun when I was 8, but now I want to watch a girl who has dreams beyond the prince,” mused DePaul. Fortunately, the 2013 Broadway revival production of “Cinderella” gave DePaul a heroine with depth. “We still have a prince and a love story, but there’s self-discovery for Cinderella in this version and friendship and forgiveness,” said DePaul. “Even with a modern retelling, it doesn’t lose that old-fashioned charm.”

Classes, free workshops and exhibitions are some of the programs offered by the Chester County Art Association (CCAA), a nonprofit organization with the goal to “educate, inspire and connect” the people of Chester County through the arts. “(The CCAA) is all about promoting the arts, creativity and creative thinking,” said CCAA executive director Wendy Kershner. “I think our world always needs more creative thinkers and creative problem solvers. We are (providing) a really good service.”

nine workshop sessions on audio file. The optional activities will include prayer walking, fitness classes, late-night conversations and one-on-one prayer times. One of the workshops is titled “Who Am I? Loved, Validated and Trusted: God’s Promises to Me.” This workshop will focus on discovering what God has to say and why His opinion matters. Women will also learn key Bible passages to refer to when they are faced with guilt, fear, shame or inadequacy. The “Self-Care: Balance Panel” lesson will focus on simple solutions on how women can balance exercise, religion, household tasks, children, marriage and their career. Another workshop, “Love One Another,” will focus on the topic by studying several Bible passages in creative ways. “Spiritual Gifts” will help attendees learn how to identify and then nurture their God-given spiritual gifts. Remaining workshops will include “Discipleship 101”; “Prayer and Intercession”; “Boundaries,” which will focus on healthy boundaries in relationships; and a “Serving Panel” session, where women will learn

ways to work in the community. The final session will be a teen panel open to girls age 12 and over. Wiggenhorn and Rousselle are both attending the conference with their 15-year-old daughters. “ We have a lot of mother-daughter couples that are coming and some teenagers coming on their own,” Rousselle said. The conference is close to being sold out, so organizers encourage women to register soon. The cost of the weekend covers five meals and two nights of lodging. For more information and a link to register, readers may visit www.cfdowningtown.com/women. Those interested in carpooling to the conference are asked to contact the church office at 610-3637171. To learn more about the speakers, readers may visit www.ericawiggenhorn.com and www.stephanie-rousselle.com.

All attendees will complete a bluebird box to take home. Preregistration is required; a fee will be charged per bluebird kit. In addition, the department will present an Owl Prowl on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Bingaman Nature Center. Attendees will learn about Pennsylvania’s native owls, their calls and fun facts about the nocturnal animals. Following the talk, the group will hike

into the woods of Antietam Lake Park to search for owls. The program is free and geared toward families with children age 5 and over. Attendees should wear sturdy footwear and warm clothing and bring a flashlight. Registration is required by calling 484-509-2667, ext. 3. The Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS) recently announced Investing in Women, an initiative aimed at providing women with important information about banking, credit, saving and investing, while offering practical resources to navigate their finances. The number of Pennsylvania women saving for retirement or investing is lower than the national average. Through strategic partnerships, the goal of Investing in Women is to evaluate investment habits, stereotypes and obstacles for women and reduce the gender gap through education, awareness, and research. By presenting fundamental concepts about the importance of financial capability and the unique financial challenges facing women, women in Pennsylvania, stakeholders, and partners are encouraged to get

can then go out and serve the world and use their feet - symbolically speaking - to step into their purpose in serving the world in the name of Christ.” The getaway weekend is open not only to women who attend Calvary Fellowship, but to women from the community. Organizers include church members Angel Omoruan, Beth Dyas and Lindsay Sterious. “It’s for women who want to grow deeper with their relationship with the Lord and one another,” Rousselle said. “It’s unusual for women to spend time away from their responsibilities to renew and refresh themselves.” This is the church’s third women’s conference, but it is the first time that the event is being held at a location other than the church. “We’re looking at holding a large conference locally at church with 400 to 500 people and doing a smaller getaway retreat where we are taking less women but going much deeper into fellowship and teaching,” Rousselle explained. “We’re hoping to alternate years in the future.” Attendees will be able to choose three of the nine available sessions, with the option to get all

involved. Investing in Women will have three important elements. The elements are financial education presentations across the state on common financial challenges for women including credit, investing, and saving for retirement; a studying of the financial capability of women to hear directly about the tools, resources, and skills they need to better prepare for any financial situation; and a financial capability forum in May to bring together experts from the financial field to share what individuals can do to take control of their finances. Investing in Women will highlight strategies that address barriers women face to more confidently manage their finances. Women are more likely to take time away from work to raise children or to be the caregiver of other family members. This

means fewer years with income to put into a retirement savings plan. The department’s Investor Education and Consumer Outreach is part of the governor’s Consumer Financial Protection Initiative. The staff works with state and local government agencies, service providers, community and trade organizations, the General Assembly, the military community, schools, and other partners to help Pennsylvanians become well-informed about the financial marketplace. Anyone can ask questions or file complaints about financial transactions, companies, or services online, or they may call 800-PA-BANKS (800-600-0007). Readers may learn more about fraud and scam prevention by following DoBS on Facebook or Twitter and with hashtag #GovWolfCFPI or subscribe to the department newsletter.

Girls are able to use proceeds from their sales to take part in an activity of their choice. “Last year, we used it for an educational trip. We went Savannah, Georgia,” said Lisa, noting that Savannah is the birthplace of Girl Scouting. “For this year, we talked about a number of trips like going to the beach or whitewater rafting.” In addition to selling cookies,

Volunteer Coaches from pg 1 The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is looking for volunteer coaches for the spring session of Girls on the Run (GOTR) and STRIDE programs. The spring session will begin on Monday, March 9, and culminate with a 5K on Saturday, May 30. GOTR focuses on building self-esteem and promoting emotional and physical health in young girls. STRIDE, which stands for Success + Teamwork + Respect + Inspiration + Determination = Excellence in Character, was developed for boys in response to the successful GOTR program. The 10-week programs teach youngsters healthy habits through running, games and lessons. Participants practice twice a week, generally after school, but coaches have an input on scheduling. The YMCA also provides training and a manual to help coaches with the curriculum. Joy Fox was a first-time coach for Avon Grove Intermediate School’s GOTR program this past fall. exercise of choice, but she participated at her nieces’ insistence. She enjoyed the experience so much she is returning for the spring. “I feel the Girls on the Run program fills a huge need among elementary school-age girls,” Fox stated. “There are many coping and fitness programs for middle and high school girls, but elementary school is where it all starts these days. This program gives them confidence and has them thinking about their health at a critical time in their lives.” In addition to connecting with the girls and watching them grow in confidence and help each other, Fox said she found they were helping her as well. They would challenge her to a race, and while coaches do not have to run, she did occasionally and found that her health was improving. And on a day when she was feeling overly stressed, a girl gave her a note that said, “Coach Joy, you are doing great!” Those interested in participating in the program as a coach are asked to complete a volunteer

“Cinderella” will play at the Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 28 and March 6; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 29 and March 7; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 1 and 8. “Cinderella” is based on the age-old tale of the same name. This version focuses on the main character, calling her Ella, played by Hannah Rau, but adds revolutionary Jean-Michael, played by Joe Kelly, and a woman known as Marie, played by Kylie Nabers, who will transform on stage into the fairy godmother. Meanwhile, the prince, played by Alexander Weaver and known as Topher (short for Christopher), worries that slaying dragons is not important enough work for a future king. According to DePaul, the cast of about 20 is also taking to the unique takes included in the revised show. “There’s humor,” stated DePaul. “When people think of Cinderella, they don’t think of the comedy, but this version is very funny. (The cast is) embracing it, and I am loving what they’re doing.”

DePaul noted that the comedy should appeal to both adults and children. “There is satire,” she said, noting that the show plays with stereotypical characters in fun ways. “(JeanMichael) is a political activist, and he wants to call the people to focus on what’s important, (such as) land or food, but the prince invites everyone to the ball and that overtakes (the activist’s) stump speech. Something superficial overtakes what everyone should be caring about.” The production also utilizes physical movement and music to tell parts of the story. “We have some fabulous dancers, and we are using their dance ability to create the magic of the transformations,” said DePaul. “There will be dancers in costumes that suggest animal characters who through their dancing become footmen,” she explained. As a Rodgers and Hammerstein show, “Cinderella” delivers a variety of music, much of which audience members will recognize. Ella will sing “In My Own Little Corner.” Other familiar numbers

will include “The Prince Is Giving a Ball” and “Impossible/It’s Possible,” sung by the fairy godmother. Hannah and Alex will also sing “Ten Minutes Ago” about the joys of spontaneous love. Newer songs will include “Me, Who Am I?” and “Now Is the Time,” which will be sung by Joe. DePaul hopes individuals who see the show will relate to the transformations they see in the characters on stage. “I really want the audience (members) to find themselves in Cinderella’s shoes and know they’re worthy,” said DePaul. “(Ella) struggles with her self-worth, (but) her fairy godmother is there to let her know she is beautiful and capable and smart. She ends up helping to bring change to her kingdom. We all have the potential to be beyond ourselves.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Counties Welcome New CCAP Leader After nearly nine years of experience representing the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) as its director of government relations, Lisa Schaefer officially began her role as executive director of the Association on Dec. 1, marking the next chapter of leadership for Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. Previous executive director Doug Hill assumed emeritus status until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2019. Hill left with nearly 36 years of service as CCAP’s executive director. Founded in 1886, CCAP represents all 67 counties in Pennsylvania with legislative leadership and provides services for residents throughout the state. CCAP’s leadership team includes deputy executive director Brinda Penyak, who has 17 years of CCAP service and extensive experience in the legislative and policy realms as well as a reputation for building relationships and programs that positively impact the many complicated issues counties manage on a daily basis. WCU from pg 5 delivery of transparent, timely, reliable, secure and cost-effective services. With Schaefer’s departure from CCAP’s government relations team, the association will be led in this area by Ashley White, who began her role as director of government relations on Dec. 9 and contributes several years of previous experience with local government issues. White

joins Melissa Anese, who has been CCAP’s government relations associate since May 2018. These individuals and nearly 90 other CCAP staff members constitute a team that continues to provide legislative, education, information, insurance, technology, communications and other programs with the goal of enhancing the quality of life throughout the state.

ongoing pedagogical support, encourage faculty professional development to increase their knowledge and skill in online teaching, emphasize instructor availability and feedback to learners and collect and use feedback from learners to improve online teaching. Certification is based on these five criteria and three years of data. Additionally, 19 WCU courses have obtained QM course certification. This certification requires the course itself to meet eight general standards and 42 specific review standards. Of WCU’s 19 total QM-certified courses, 14 are

graduate level. Rui Li, executive director of WCU’s Office of Distance Education, pointed out that some content areas are more suitable than others for online delivery and “successful online/blended teaching requires a significant course transformation.” Facilitating that transformation is Li’s Instructional Technology team, which includes four instructional designers, a learning technology specialist and two online support specialists. This spring, there are 130 classes offered 100% online, more than 60 classes offered in blended

mode (between 30 and 79% online) and four that offer 80% or more online instruction. Most are upper-level, but there are also introductory/first-year-level courses in many subjects such as art history, communication studies/disorders, meteorology, music history, political science, statistics, writing and others. The next goal, Li said, is QM certification in Online Learner Support, which recognizes programs that provide the student and academic services needed for learner success and use learner feedback to continuously improve those services.

Chocolate is often described as decadent, and rightfully so. But chocolate desserts can be more than merely decadent. In fact, this recipe for Pasticcio di Cioccolato con Lampone (Individual Chocolate Cakes With Fresh Raspberries) from Michael White and Joanna Pruess’ “Fiamma: The Essence of Contemporary Italian Cooking” (Wiley) is both decadent and, thanks to the fresh raspberries, refreshing.

Instructions 1 - Preheat the oven to 325 F. Spray a standard muffin tin with nonstick spray or fill eight of the cups with paper or foil liners. 2 - Sift the flour, 1/3 cup of cocoa, salt, and baking soda into a bowl and set aside. Melt the butter in a small saucepan and set aside. 3 - Combine the eggs and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Set the bowl over a pan partially filled with simmering water. The water should not touch the bowl. Using a whisk, beat the egg-sugar mixture until it feels very warm to the touch and all of the sugar has dissolved. Immediately remove the bowl from the heat and transfer it to the electric mixer. 4 - Whip the egg-sugar mixture on medium speed for 3 to 4 minutes until it triples in volume and is very thick and light colored. Add the vanilla and whip 2 to 3 seconds longer to blend. Remove the bowl from the mixer and gently fold in the flour-cocoa mixture. 5 - Place about 1 1/2 cups of the batter in a separate bowl and fold in the melted butter. Do this gently, as you do not want to overwork the batter. Fold this into the remaining batter. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake tins. Bake in the center of the oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick or knife inserted in the center of one cupcake comes out clean. Remove and cool completely on a rack. 6 - While the cupcakes are cooling, combine the heavy cream with the confectioners’ sugar and the remaining 2 tablespoons of cocoa, beat into soft peaks, and set aside. 7 - Remove the cupcakes from the tin and place them on dessert plates. Spoon the whipped cream on top, divide the raspberries among the plates and serve.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful recently announced that registration is open for the 2020 Pick Up Pennsylvania, an initiative supporting the Great American Cleanup. This annual event will run from Sunday, March 1, to Sunday, May 31. During this period, registered events can get free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests donated by the Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and Keep America Beautiful, as supplies last. Events can include litter cleanups, cleanups of illegal dumps, community greening and beautification, special collections, and education events and must be registered at www.gacofpa.org to receive free cleanup supplies. As part of this event, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will sponsor free or reduced-cost trash disposal for registered program participants at participating landfills from Wednesday, April 1, through Thursday, April 30, with prior approval. During the 2019 event, 92,342 volunteers were instrumental in cleaning up over 6 million pounds of trash during 5,356 events held across the state. Groups, individuals, and local governments participate in the annual initiative as a way to rally volunteers, reduce cleanup costs, and be connected to a larger movement. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is also encouraging state leaders to lead the way with its newest initiative, Leaders for a Beautiful Pennsylvania. The initiative asks legislators and public officials to support community volunteers and improvement events in their service areas. To learn more, readers may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and choose Keep It. The results of a recent statewide study on litter, conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, found that there are currently an estimated 500 million pieces of litter on Pennsylvania roadways. It is estimated to be composed of over 37% cigarette butts and over 30% plastic items. Among other things, this litter pollutes the environment and affects quality of life. To host an event or join a nearby cleanup event, readers may visit www.gacofpa.org. Questions can be answered by Michelle Dunn, Pick Up Pennsylvania program coordinator, at 877-772-3673 ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org. Anyone participating in Pick Up Pennsylvania can earn cash prizes for their nonprofit or charity of choice by entering the groups Pick Up Pennsylvania Video Contest. To participate, participants should send Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful a 60-second video of their event showing how they keep Pennsylvania beautiful. For details, readers may visit www.gacofpa.org and choose Video Contest.

Winter brings snow, ice and freezing rain, so readers are encouraged to heed the following winter safety tips. First, icy patches can be difficult to see. The slips and falls caused by ice can be serious. If one comes across an area believed to be icy, he or she should tap the edge of the area with a foot. People should wear shoes with gripping soles to provide traction. Also, they should keep hands out of their pockets when walking in order to keep balance on a slippery surface. They should avoid carrying heavy items like shopping bags, which can change one’s center of balance, making it easier to slip and fall. Also, shoveling snow can pose a health risk for many people. Snow shoveling is a strenuous activity. It can increase blood pressure and heart rate.

If people must shovel snow, they should shovel as early as possible, as snow is heavier after it has been on the ground for a few days, often melting and refreezing, creating a solid chunk of snow rather than powdery, just-fallen snow. In addition, individuals should stay hydrated. Dehydration is common during the winter months. Winter activities are just as strenuous as summer activities, and people also tend to wear layers of warm clothing during the winter, meaning that the body works harder by sweating to cool down. Not staying hydrated can lead to exhaustion, muscle fatigue, cramps, loss of coordination or even stroke. Dehydration also makes one an easy target for colds and flu.

Once enforcement begins on March 4, registered owners will receive a warning letter for a first offense, a violation notice and $75 fine for a second offense, and a viola-

tion notice and $150 fine for third and subsequent offenses. These violations are civil penalties only; no points will be assessed to driver’s licenses.
