VALENTINE’S BREAKFAST

Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, will host the 12th annual Valentine’s Day Breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 7 a.m. to noon. In addition to the traditional menu, special Valentine’s Day items will be offered, including whipped hot chocolate, chocolatecovered strawberries, and pancakes with chocolate chips. Guitarist Phyllis Hummel will play acoustic guitar and sing a variety of romantic ballads throughout the event. Reservations are not required. There will be separate admission prices for adults and children ages 5 to 11. Children under age 5 may eat for free. TRAIL HIKE

Members of the Berks Strollers group will hike the Muhlenberg Rail Trail on Saturday, Feb. 16. The group will meet at 10 a.m. at the parking lot located off Montrose Avenue in Laureldale. COMPOSTING CLASSES

The Chester County Board of Commissioners, through the Chester County Solid Waste Authority, will offer free Certified Master Composting Classes on Thursdays, March 7, 14, and 21. Classes will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. in the second-floor Struble Room at the Chester County Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. Classes will end at 8:30 p.m. Attendance all three weeks is required to become certified. Trainees will learn how to compost, how to construct various compost bins, how to grasscycle and leafcycle, and how to reduce food waste by vermicomposting. Church Plans Dinner, Square Dance By Francine Fulton

Couples affected by disability, whether they have a disability themselves or care for a child or another loved one with special needs, are invited to attend a dinner and square dance that will be presented at Brick Lane Community Church, 52 S. Brick Lane, Elverson, on Saturday, March 2. This year, for the first time, the event will be offered free of charge by the church’s Disability Ministry. “Last year, we added child care for the attendees’ children, and it was well received,” noted Curtis Hoke, a member of the Disability Ministry and a wheelchair user. “This year, we have made the whole event free. (We decided), ‘Let’s make it a gift.’” On the night of the event, attendees

will be asked to sign in at the welcome desk beginning at 4:30 p.m. A buffet dinner will begin at 5 p.m. Following dinner at 5:45 p.m., a brief inspirational message will be provided by Curtis, who suffered a spinal cord injury in 1983, and his wife, Carol, who will share their story. After a small break, square dancing take place from 6:15 to 8 p.m. Stefan Menger, a professional caller, will once again lead the dancers. “He is used to working with groups that are unfamiliar with square dancing,” said Curtis. Curtis emphasized that attendees are not required to take part in the dances. “People can come for the fellowship; you don’t have to dance,” he said, noting that the venue will offer soft incandescent lighting to add to the ambience. Cavod To Produce “The Secret Garden” Local Woman To Be Featured In Magazine By Ann Mead Ash

Historian Dave Walter will present a program about Civil War generals with ties to Chester County who fought to preserve the Union. Some generals were wounded, some were killed, one was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and one was purported to be the youngest Civil War general. The meeting is free and open to the public.
