The She Shed: A Dream Come True

Mary Frazier and Marie Jackson, friends and fellow school bus drivers for the Twin Valley School District, had always talked about opening a store that featured their handmade crafts as well as those made by local artisans.

Their dream became reality with the opening of The She Shed, located at 3605 E. Main St., Morgantown, on Nov. 3, 2020. Housed in a former hair salon, The She Shed offers country dĂŠcor, including signs, candles,

artwork, lamps, wreaths and furniture. Other featured products include dish towels, mugs, handmade Valentine’s Day and birthday cards and bath and beauty products.

The women met at the bus lot five years ago, and they still work as school bus drivers. “We always wanted to open a shop and one day we said, ‘Let’s try it.’ It happened really fast,� said Jackson. “Between finding the place and opening was one month.�

Locally crafted products at the store include furniture, such as a storage table with drawers made by a local student. “A college student looking to make some extra money redid some furniture and we bought from her to sell,� said Jackson. “There are a bunch of artists in a co-op that come together, and we purchase from them (as well).�

at Conestoga Christian School and 35 years of leading Bible studies, Lisa Betz, president of the board of trustees for the Village Library of Morgantown, recently announced she has published her first book, “Death and a Crocodile.�

Betz describes the book as a lighthearted mystery, which is set in Rome AD 46. “I have been leading Bible studies, so I set (the book) in the time of the New Testament,�

The book tells the story of Livia, whose father dies under suspicious circumstances. With the help of her maidservant, Livia sets out to find the killer before her innocent brother is convicted of the murder. In addition to the courageous women, the book also includes eccentric characters and a sausage-stealing cat.

When announcing the publishing of the book, Betz stated, “By combining historical detail, faith

to become an author of a book. “I was an engineering major so writing was not on my mind back in school.

But I always love reading stories and making up stories in my head,� she shared. “I actually took a creative writing course on a whim when my kids were in school, which hooked my interest in writing. My love of writing slowly grew and developed until I eventually thought I wanted to write a book.�

While the pandemic has caused the postponement or cancellation of many events and activities, the traditional sale of Girl Scout Cookies will go on.

In lieu of selling Girl Scout cookies at booths at local stores, however, cookies will be sold online and those who purchase them will be able to pick up their cookies in a drive-through format. This will allow the Scouts to conduct sales safely with minimal contact.

Locally, troops in the Twin Valley Service Unit will hold online sales with pickup being offered at the Morgantown Holiday Inn, 6170 Morgantown Road, Morgantown, and at Plow Farms, 4410 Morgantown Road, Mohnton. “You typically see our Twin

Valley Girl Scout troops selling outside places like Walmart, Turkey Hill and Lowe’s.

This year, during the time of COVID-19, you will not see us in front of these stores,� said Shannon Long, Twin Valley cookie manager. “Twin Valley troops will be hosting curbside pickups in the parking lots of Holiday Inn and Plow Farms every weekend through March. (People can) place a preorder, pick a location and date that works best for them, pay online and drive up to the location for contactless pickup.�

Many of the troops are using social media to sell cookies this year. Long has also placed a link to order cookies on several Facebook pages, including “In Twin Valley.� Posters are also available at local businesses with a QR code enabling people to order

PCCD Grants Distributed Over $1.7 million in Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) grants have been awarded to Chester County organizations and agencies. The funds support a variety of programs and services, including adult probation services, bodyworn camera initiatives, and domestic abuse programs.

The grants include Improvement of Adult Probation Services Funds in the amount of $533,144 that was awarded to Chester County.

Federal STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant funds were awarded to the following entities: Chester County commissioners for

Chester County STOP Grant 2021, $124,992; The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, RASA/VOJO Project 2021-22, $698,379; and Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, Providing Rights and Services to Victims, $55,014.

The Chester County commissioners received $47,000 in State Children’s Advocacy Center funds for the CAC Assistant 2021 project, as well as $318,377 in CACAC State Endowment Act funds for a program to be announced.

Vicky noted that this will be the last year that the S’mores cookie will be sold. “Get them before they are gone,� she said.

In addition to those mentioned, other Girl Scout Cookie varieties include Caramel deLites, Lemonades, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich and Shortbread.

Those who pick up their cookies at the drive-through locations will also have an opportunity to donate to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The program provides cookies to nonprofit organizations in the local community.

The girls noted that a new toast-shaped cookie - the Toast-Yay! - is being offered this year. “The cookie looks like French toast and tastes like cinnamon and it has the Girl Scout symbol on it,� Shelby explained.

HCVHA To Hold Takeout Valentine’s Dinner

A series of “foodraisers” are being planned by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace, Geigertown.

The first event will be a Valentine’s Lasagna Dinner on Friday, Feb. 12, which will be held in lieu of the site’s annual Valentine’s Day breakfast. Dinners will be available for curbside pickup at Joanna Furnace between noon and 6 p.m. that day.

Volunteers are preparing the meal, which will include one half-pound pan of meat lasagna, a salad, bread and two chocolate-covered strawberries. A gluten-free meat lasagna with gluten-free noodles will also be available with no bread.

Chocolate-covered strawberries will also be offered, for a set price per pound.

“All the dinners will be sold cold with heating instructions included,” noted Mark Zerr,

HCVHA executive director. “ We are giving you (the lasagna) to heat up. You can take it home and refrigerate it or if you want to, you could freeze it and thaw it and make it another time. We can’t sell a hot dinner and have it still be hot when you get home.”

The lasagna will be made by HCVHA volunteers in advance. The strawberries will be freshly dipped in chocolate that day. “These are the strawberries we would normally include at our breakfast,” said Zerr.

Following the lasagna dinner event, HCVHA will present a fastnacht sale on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Feb. 16 is Fastnacht Day, which is always celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Fastnachts, which are yeastraised potato pastries, will be sold by the dozen. “We are making them from scratch.

They are potato fasnachts,”

Zerr pointed out.

In March, a sale of shepherd’s pie is planned instead of the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Irish breakfast.

“Our goal each month is to do a foodraiser right through to July,” Zerr said. “Each month, we will offer different things from dinners and soups to pies and a barbecue in July. Once we get to the fall, we are hoping our (annual) festival will return.”

Group Offers Social Activities For Seniors

Senior Connections, a social group for people age 60 and over, will meet on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. The program will include a free homemade meal at noon, followed by a Valentine’s Day program.

Meetings of the group are held on the second Thursday of each month. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing and to wear a face covering. “(People) come in and we greet them, and they can sit wherever they want. Masks are required and we only sit a few at a table,” explained Lois Boyer of East Earl, who leads the group along with her husband, Wes. “Then we have the meal and then the program.

People visit before and after (the program), too.”

Boyer said that Senior Connections was a group within the church, but it was opened up to the community in 2019.

“Until Wes and I took over, it was only advertised in the church bulletin and by word of mouth,” she said. “ We wanted it to go further than that and open it up to the public. We wanted it to be a ministry.”

She said those who attend meetings hail from Narvon, East Earl, Morgantown, New Holland and Reading. “When the weather is bad, we get around 27 people; when it’s good, we get between 40 to 50 people,” said Boyer, noting that the noontime meal is prepared by ladies from the church.

Guest speakers are from the community. “We try to

get speakers that interest senior citizens, (but) we get all kinds of speakers,” she said. “We had a harpist and speakers that talked about their trip on the Appalachian Trail, (and speakers) who presented programs about their trips to Africa and Antarctica.

We had a speaker who talked about wheat carving.”

Group members have also enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner, a program on beekeeping and a day trip to the historic Bowmansville Roller Mill in Narvon.

“In May, we are going to have the inventor of the VideoRay, an underwater camera,” Boyer added.

When Logan McGrane of Gap was not yet 4 years old, he started riding motorcycles.

By the time he was 4, he was racing motorcycles. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26 through 29, 2020, the 15year-old Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) freshman smoked the competition during three days of racing in Travelers Rest, S.C. “He won three national championships,� said Logan’s grandfather Thomas McGrane.

Logan is the son of Thomas McGrane Jr. of Gap and Laurie Wilson of Honey Brook.

Logan bested all the other racers in five of the nine main events at Travelers Rest, and he placed second or third in the other four. Logan’s winnings included the College Boy National Championship for young men ages 14 to 29.

McGrane also won the Open Amateur National Championship, where riders must be 12 or older on a 250 to 450 cc (cubic centimeter) bike, and

the 450 Amateur National Championship, where racers must be 14. He also raced short track and half-mile events, along with the TT (Tours Trophy) race, which features a jump and a righthand corner.

Off the track, Logan plays basketball for PVHS, and he was the only freshman to start with the PVHS football team in the fall of 2020, earning his varsity letter. Logan said that racing has not interfered with schoolwork or school activities.

Racing motorcycles runs in Logan’s blood. “It’s what we do,� noted his grandfather, adding that Logan uses the motorcycles that were ridden by his late uncle Kyle McGrane, a champion racer in the Ice Racing Series, and a multi-Amateur National Champion, among other titles. Kyle was killed while racing in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 2016 at the age of 17.

Logan’s father was also a national champion, and his uncle Warren Diem was a world champion.

Asked what he enjoys most about racing, Logan cited “going fast� and “winning,� but noted that traveling is fun as well. He said that he has visited Florida, Georgia, both North and South Carolina, and Tennessee and has traveled up the East Coast as well.

Heading west, he has been to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kansas, South Dakota, and Colorado. “I just got back from Jacksonville, Fla.,� said Logan in mid-January. While in Florida, he finished third in the Winter Throwdown races held Jan. 8 and 9.

Logan looks forward to turning professional as soon as he celebrates his 16th birthday in September, but he noted that will depend on the racing schedule. “If there are only one or two races after my birthday, I might wait until 2022,� he said. “This is what I want to do,� he added, grinning.

COVID-19 Relief Awarded To Nonprofits Chester County’s commissioners have stepped up to help local nonprofits recover from the impact of COVID19. Through the Restore Chester County Nonprofit Innovation & Resiliency Fund, the commissioners obtained $3.5 million in federal CARES Act funding.

The Nonprofit Innovation & Resiliency Fund was administered by the Chester County Community Foundation with input from regional funders, United Ways and Chester County government departments. In November and December 2020, the Community Foundation awarded 134 grants ranging from $2,500 to $100,000 to Chester County-

based nonprofits.

The grant allocations by field of interest included the following: $2.5 million for human services; $376,000 to art, culture and history organizations; $361,000 to education; $176,000 for health services; and $113,000 to environmental causes.

Geographically, $1.5 million was awarded to nonprofits in central Chester County, and approximately $500,000 was awarded to nonprofits located in northern, southern, eastern and western Chester County.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak continues, the commissioners urge the public to support nonprofits through

financial contributions, donations of supplies, and volunteering online and in-person.

COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Update Posted Residents of Chester County can now preregister for the COVID-19 vaccine by completing a form found on the Chester County Health Department’s COVID-19 web page. The form, for all individuals age 16 and over who live and work in Chester County, can be found at www.chesco.org/covidvaccine.

Completion of the form conveys a person’s interest in receiving the vaccine, and the information provided helps the health department to place individuals into the Phase 1A, 1B, 1C and 2 categories. The recent change in Phase 1A groups, announced by the Pennsylvania Department of

Health, led the Chester County Health Department to revise its original preregistration survey, moving it away from just Phases 1A and 1B and opening preregistration to all who live and work in Chester County.

Because of the state’s changes in Phase 1A groups, everyone who falls into the group defined as “ages 16 to 64 with medical conditions” is asked to complete the form again to ensure they are moved to Phase 1A. Everyone who submits a preregistration form will receive a confirmation and regular updates regarding the status of vaccine distribution in Chester County.

The Chester County Health Department opens appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine based on the availability of vaccine to administer.

Additional vaccination sites beyond the current site at the Chester County Government Services Center in West Chester - have been secured and were scheduled to begin operating recently as vaccine supplies allowed.

After her youngest son went to college about 10 years ago, Betz began researching book writing and how to find a publisher by attending various conferences and workshops. “I wrote several manuscripts before this one. It was sort of a learning process,” she said.

“This one I started probably three years ago.”

Betz’s manuscript was a finalist in a competition for unpublished writers presented by the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) in the category for mystery/suspense thriller. “That let me know that I had a good product. Shortly after that, I got an offer from a publisher,” she said.

She said the writing process included creating an outline of the story. “I knew the crime and a general outline of how the book would go,” said Betz. “As you go

payers will take part in a selfpreparation process, filling out forms and placing them in an envelope. “One of our preparers will check the envelope, scan the documents and give all the originals back, and (taxpayers) will come back to sign once (their tax return) is prepared.”

Laird noted that VITA was informed by the IRS that the agency will not accept any e-files until Friday, Feb. 12. “This is quite a significant change from prior years and means the IRS will not even begin processing refunds until sometime after Feb. 12,” said Laird. “We will take dropoffs, begin the preparation, and will do the final review as close to Feb. 12 as we can.”

VITA is geared toward lowand moderate-income families, but anyone may have their taxes prepared for free.

VITA volunteers ensure that families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s liabilities and increase his or her refund.

“Most of our people come to us and walk out with thousands of dollars in refunds.

We really check that they get the credits they deserve,” said Laird. “We treat them with respect, and they feel it. They know we care about them.”

LTM, based in Coatesville, has partnered with the IRS to operate sites in Chester County since 2004. Locations for 2021 include The Transformation Center, 643-645 E. Webinar Will Be Held In Spanish To address these problems, Penn State Extension will present a “Safe Drinking Water” webinar in Spanish on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. using Zoom. The aim is to provide Spanish speaking residents with the information they need to maintain a safe private water supply. This includes water obtained through a private well, spring or cistern.

Water coming from a public water company or authority must meet drinking water safety standards when it leaves the treatment plant.

However, if someone owns a private well or spring, all management and testing is voluntary.

Common problems in private water supplies include bacterial contamination, sed-

iment, lead, nitrate, iron, and corrosivity. Residents attending the clinic can learn how to avoid, detect, and treat the contaminants they are likely to find in their water.

The webinar will cover drinking water standards, proper well construction, land-use activities associated with individual pollutants, water testing, and water treatment. Private well owners should have a certified laboratory test their water for bacteria annually and for other chemicals at least every three years.

Holding an auction in a retirement community is no easy feat under COVID-19 restrictions, but rather than being limited by the situation, Garden Spot Village (GSV) chose to safely expand the annual Birdhouse Auction that supports the community’s benevolent fund through the sale of one-of-a-kind items handcrafted by GSV residents.

This year, the auction will be structured using two separate platforms - the traditional indoor silent auction and an online auction.

According to Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with GSV, about 50 items will be offered on each platform. The silent auction will be held in the Village Square Indoor Park, 433 S. Birdhouses will range from traditional log cabins to those made of unusual materials, such as wine corks, along with those that are designed to be functional for certain types of birds. One creation resembles a miniature guitar, and another displays the round shape of a castle turret. Many are painted in bright colors, and some are covered in decoupage. Bird-themed items include decorative shutters, quilted items adorned with bright red cardinals, and a cork purse and matching wallet in earth tones with a splash of rust. “I have a beautiful wooden tray with a chickadee hand painted

In the more than a dozen years it has been held, the effort has raised more than $40,000 to benefit the benevolent fund, which supports GSV residents who have exhausted their financial resources.

Cuthie noted that high bidders in the silent auction will be notified by phone. Online high bidders will be notified electronically. “We are offering shipping or pickup of items,” she noted.

Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry is the recognized leader who continues to set the cabinetry industry standard for perfection. We are interested in meeting individuals who possess the desire, passion, and experience to join our team to help craft and support the production of some of the finest cabinetry available.

We are now hiring for the following full-time positions: Sanders – Responsible for sanding and prepping cabinets and doors. Will operate hand held air sander.

Machine Operators – Performs the cutting and machining process of the lumber to make the product. Will operate straight line rip saw, radial arm saw, table rip saw, molder, various sanders and planers, lift truck and various hand tools.

Finishers/Sprayers – Responsible to spray sealer top coat, stain and glaze product on or off a tow line and perform all aspects of work in the Finishing Department. Will operate a spray gun and agitator along with mixing catalyst.

Cabinet Assembler – Assembles the components, basic fillers, end panels and sands the cabinet. Will construct basic cabinetry within specifications.

Cabinet Hardware – Performs the basic final assembly of cabinetry installing all hardware and components to cabinets; hanging doors, installing shelves, mounting drawer fronts, installing drawer/roll-out tracks. Will use power and hand tools, gauging equipment and jigs.

Candidates must have a proven work history, be detail oriented and able to read and interpret measurements, work orders and wood species. Previous manufacturing experience helpful. Will be required to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in an environment where there is exposure to dirt, dust and noise.

The Manufacturing hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., with overtime required as needed.
