Children of all ages are invited to read to a certified therapy dog at the Honey Brook Community Library. Lily, an English setter/border collie mix, who is a certified therapy dog, and her canine sister Pansy, a therapy dog in training, are available at the library on the last Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. Readers may register for a 10-minute time slot to read to the dogs. The purpose of the program is to provide children with a comfortable environment to practice their reading skills. “They are nonjudgmental listeners. (No matter the level of your

reading skills), the dog will love you anyway,” said the dogs’ owner, Liz Alakszay. “It boosts confidence, and it also is relaxing to have a dog around.” She explained that the program stresses the importance of reading. “I love doing this program with children because children are always in front of the computer and that is stressful it its own ways,” Alakszay noted. “This brings people back. It’s really important.” Lily is certified through Therapy Dogs International. Alakszay said that certification training can take up to three years, noting that Lily has earned her American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen certificate and the See Honey Brook Library pg 7

Bridge Of Hope Chester County Names Executive Director

CCL Receives National Honor By Francine Fulton

The Chester County Library (CCL) was recently named as one of America’s Top-Rated Libraries - earning the designation as a Star Library by Library Journal, a leading publication for the profession.

Although Bridge of Hope Chester County is now part of a national organization and it has new leadership, the philosophy of the organization remains the same. “We are a nonprofit organization whose commitment is to end homelessness,” stated executive director Lisa Cameron. Prior to her appointment to Bridge of Hope in January, Cameron served as director of empowerment services at YWCA Lancaster from 2010 to 2019. Her work with the YWCA continues as a consultant with the YWCA USA for a pilot program that focuses on girls and women of color who have experienced trauma.

Children of all ages are invited to read to a certified therapy dog at the Honey Brook Community Library on the last Tuesday of each month. During the session on Jan. 28, Hunter Pasela read to Lily, an English setter/border collie mix.

This is the second year that CCL has received this distinction in the 12 years that Library Journal has published the index. This year, the index evaluated 6,333 public libraries across the country. CCL joins just 261 other libraries honored in the nation. The designation groups libraries with See CCL pg 6

The Chester County commissioners recently honored Chester County Library System (CCLS) staff members for the library’s designation as one of America’s Star Libraries. Participants in the recognition ceremony included (from left) CCLS executive director Joe Sherwood, Commissioner Michelle Kichline, Chester County Library director Marguerite Dube and Commissioners Marian Moskowitz and Josh Maxwell.

Banquet To Feature Fredericks pg 2

2 - COMMUNITYCOURIER - Morgantown/Honey Brook Edition - February 5, 2020

Banquet from pg 1 According to Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akron-area churches that are planning the group’s 16th annual sportsmen’s banquet, speaker Merle R. Fredericks was recommended to the group by a committee member and then references were checked. The outcome was favorable. “(Fredericks) fit the criteria we were looking for,” noted Hertzler. Two years ago, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place again this year. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a family-style dinner including chicken and ham balls will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out each evening as well. Fredericks, who hails from Medina, N.Y., has been an avid big game hunter his whole life. Hunting around the country, he has pursued whitetail deer, elk, pronghorn, antelope, black bear,

and mule deer as far south as Mississippi and as far west as Oregon. He has hunted successfully using a variety of instruments, including a bow, shotgun, rifle, and muzzleloader. Fredericks has a history in law enforcement, with a career spanning 25 years. He is a retired county sheriff. Fredericks is a New York statecertified bowhunting education instructor and a lifetime member of Christian Bowhunters of America (CBA), currently serving as executive director of the organization. He also serves as the chair of CBA’s board of directors. CBA is an outreach to the archery community, offering programs for both adults and youths, while proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. The organization seeks to exalt and serve Jesus Christ by leading lost people to Him and encouraging Christian growth. CBA’s purpose includes challenging bowhunters to allow Christ to govern their individual lives and to share the common joy and experience of bowhunting with other Christian bowhunters. According to Hertzler, a number of vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors

open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. A vendor who sells jewelry will also take part. The banquet is known for the door prizes that are given away during the meal. This year, Hertzler said that a number of items have been donated by local businesses. Some of those will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16. About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets are available for each evening. Tickets may be purchased at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “Sportsmen’s Outreach, New Holland, PA” or by calling 717-738-0963.

Cameron has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and theater from Eastern Mennonite University and a master’s degree in community counseling from Western Michigan University. She is a licensed professional counselor and a certified trauma practitioner and has worked as a mental health therapist since 2004. Bridge of Hope began serving families facing homelessness more than 30 years ago in Lancaster and Chester counties. It was started by churches in the Gap area. Today, Bridge of Hope Chester County is one of 19 Bridge of Hope locations across 12 states. “The national organization started in 2002 to help bring the model to other communities, first in Pennsylvania and then across the country,” said Kathy Beiler, director of strategic engagement. “The national office provides the curriculum and support to the affiliates and to the other locations.” As part of the Bridge of Hope program, homeless families or those in danger of becoming homeless are connected with a church or faith-based community, called neighboring volunteers, along with a case manager. The goals of the program include providing families with safe and sus-

tainable housing, improving their financial position and longterm resources and offering a support system. “Our definition of homelessness is anything that compromises safe and stable housing,” Beiler explained. “This could be a family doubled up with someone else or people who are living out of their cars. These are people experiencing homelessness.” Bridge of Hope clients are matched with neighboring volunteers who provide support and tangible services such as child care and transportation to work or school. “The neighboring volunteers are six to 10 volunteers (from a church) who almost act like an extended family,” Beiler noted. “(Clients) do need to commit to be in the program for about 18 months. It’s not a short-term solution; it is a long-term solution to homelessness. They are in it for the long haul. We build a foundation of support.” While in the program, Bridge of Hope clients may receive help with budgeting, finding a better job, getting a GED and/or completing their education. Short-term rental assistance is also provided on a sliding scale. “When they are facing this period of instability,

that is one less thing they have to worry about,” Cameron said. Bridge of Hope is in need of local congregation members to become neighboring volunteers. “There is a training component a minimum of five hours - with me,” said Cameron. “We learn a lot about homelessness and what the expectations are for the families and also for the neighboring volunteers, and we intentionally create opportunities in which these groups of people can meet and begin to form a healthy and long-lasting relationship.” Churches already involved in the program include Sandy Hill Community Church in Coatesville, which was one of the founders of Bridge of Hope Chester and Lancaster Counites, and Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester. “For churches who do want to respond to this call, it is an exciting opportunity. We would love to talk with them,” Cameron said. Bridge of Hope Chester County is located at 1 N. Bacton Hill Road, Suite 100, Malvern. National Wear Red Day Is Friday, Feb. 7 The American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women, encourages men and women to wear red on Friday, Feb. 7, in honor of National Wear Red Day. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and many groups across the country observe National Wear Red Day each year on the first Friday in February to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death among Americans, especially women. The AHA notes that heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women as compared to men. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. CVS Health will offer nocost heart health screenings at MinuteClinic locations nationwide on select Thursdays in February. To learn more, readers may visit https://cvshealth .com/social-responsibility/ our-giving/go-red-for-women. Readers may make a donation to support the cause at www.wearredday.org. Birdhouse Display from pg 1 cross-stitched items, and a hand sewn red purse will be on display as part of this year’s fundraiser. All the items that will be sold are made by GSV residents. On Feb. 1, GSV’s club members unveiled the dozens of items inspired by their feathered friends in the Village Square Indoor Park, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The public may view and bid on the items through Friday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. High bidders will be notified by phone. Cuthie reported that she was delighted to see what residents had created for the 2020 auction.

By Ann Mead Ash

“The event was started by the woodshop and only included the other clubs (afterward),” said Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV), referring to the community’s annual Birdhouse Display and Silent Auction, now in its 12th year. Libraries were evaluated and compared based on expenditure categories. In order to qualify for consideration, libraries must be a public entity, have a service area with a population of at least 1,000 residents and have a total operating expenditure of at least $10,000. CCL received a threestar designation within the $5 million to $9.9 million expenditure category. The Star Library designation is just one of the many honors that the library has received recently. In 2019, it earned the Pennsylvania Library Association’s State Library of the Year Award. Marguerite Dube, director of the Chester County Library and

We get comments all the time about how helpful they are,” Dube stated. “We also have a wide variety of resources that people are always surprised to discover, (including) museum passes, (Wi-Fi) hotspots, business resources, ebooks and Digital Media Lab equipment, such as a 3-D printer and virtual/augmented reality equipment.” She also expressed gratitude to the county commissioners, the Friends of the Chester County Library and the Chester County Library Trustees for their support. organizers have raised close to $40,000 for the fund. According to woodshop member Bill George, who has taken part in the auction since its inception, one birdhouse from the past has returned to be auctioned again. George recalled a birdhouse built more than 10 years ago that sold for a significant amount of money. Before the owner died early this year, she had directed family members to donate the birdhouse back to GSV to be auctioned again. The Village Square Indoor Park is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, as well as from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Before visiting during general open hours, visitors should call 717-355-6000 to ensure that the location is not closed for a special event. Visitors should park outside the visitors center in Parking Lot 1.

Annual Auction To Support Benevolent Fund

“There’s a whimsical theme about some of them this year, which I love,” she said, adding that she is impressed with the originality of the artisans. “I don’t know how they continue to think of new designs and new ideas,” she noted. One of this year’s birdhouses is a replica of St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland. Cuthie also noted that there are a few painted chickens along with the wild birds. According to Cuthie, residents work on projects during the fall and early winter for the benefit of the benevolent fund, which supports GSV residents who have exhausted their financial resources. In the dozen years that the event has been held,

lar uses of the library include its internet access and its variety of children’s programs. “We do get a lot of people who come just to study or work quietly using our Wi-Fi. We have even seen people in the parking lot using the Wi-Fi before and after hours,” she said. “The children’s section is probably our most popular place,” Dube continued. “We do quite a few story times each day, and our Summer Reading Club and Science in the Summer programs are very popular.” Dube commented that the library has changed dramatically over the nearly 20 years that she has been on staff. “As I mentioned, people use the library to access the internet through our Wi-Fi. They also use it as a gathering place to hold small meetings and collaborate,” she said. “There has been a much larger emphasis on technology, and our Digital Media Lab has become very popular, bringing people in who want to make, invent and tinker with the latest software and electronic gadgets,” she shared. “We just added a 24/7 Holds pickup locker in front of the library so people can access their items after hours. Of course, in addition to print books, we carry e-books, electronic magazines, a language learning database and many more electronic resources for education and business.” Future plans at the library include some structural changes. “The county actually approved a plan to redesign the first floor of the library beginning in 2021,” Dube noted. “The plan opens up the lobby area to relieve congestion, making it more accessible for wheelchairs, scooters and strollers,” Dube pointed out. “We will also be adding glass-enclosed workspaces for private or collaborate use in the reference area. Finally, we will be combining the reference and multimedia desks to provide more efficient service to our patrons.” The Chester County Library is located at 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. The Commonwealth Financial Agency (CFA) has awarded grants to two dairy farms in the 44th District. The CFA Board voted on funding requests received as a part of its Pennsylvania Dairy Investment Program. Two dairy farms in Chester County were successful in their requests. Camphill Village Kimberton Hill Inc. was awarded $41,389 for the installation of pasteurization and cheese-making equipment, including a 105-gallon vat and vacuum packaging equipment. Camphill Village Kimberton Hills is a nonprofit organization, composed of 44 residents with developmental disabilities and 51 resident volunteers who live within the 432-acre village. Conebella Farm Cheese LLC in Elverson received $4,879 to assist with product expansion and re-branding. Conebella Farm has gained much success in southeastern Pennsylvania from its first store and has now become a staple in local markets, festivals and restaurants. The company was able to expand its line to include other types of cheese, butter and Greek yogurt. With the additional received funding, Conebella will be able to update its branding to include the PA Preferred logo and register UPC labels to expand its product reach to grocery outlets like Giant Food Stores, ShopRite and Wegmans.

Community Canine certificate. Pansy is on the way to becoming certified. “She is going for her Canine Good Citizen test. That comes first. Then she will go for her Therapy Dogs International test,” Alakszay explained. “Although it is not required, I will probably go for the Community Canine test. For the Good Citizen, they test you in a training facility indoors. For the Community test, they test you outdoors, like in downtown West Chester.” In addition to visiting libraries, Lily and Alakszay visit the Barclay Friends senior living facility in West Chester. “Depending on where they are with Alzheimer’s or dementia, (the residents) come to life when they see her. It is very gratifying,” Alakszay added. “(Visiting with a dog) releases stress relieving hormones, which the medical community has certainly documented.” Lily and her owner also visit elementary schools upon request. Alakszay noted that one local school allowed Lily to visit with students who had been bullied and were afraid to come to school. “The kids hung out with the dog for six weeks, and it made a world of difference,” she noted. “It was amazing how these kids turned around and are

because you’re walking them, but the emotional connection helps you live longer. (When I read the study) I said, “I could have told you that,’” she shared with a smile. The next therapy dog session at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 25. To register, individuals may call the library at 610-273-3303.
