Children of all ages are invited to read to a certified therapy dog at the Honey Brook Community Library. Lily, an English setter/border collie mix, who is a certified therapy dog, and her canine sister Pansy, a therapy dog in training, are available at the library on the last Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. Readers may register for a 10-minute time slot to read to the dogs. The purpose of the program is to provide children with a comfortable environment to practice their reading skills. “They are nonjudgmental listeners. (No matter the level of your
reading skills), the dog will love you anyway,” said the dogs’ owner, Liz Alakszay. “It boosts confidence, and it also is relaxing to have a dog around.” She explained that the program stresses the importance of reading. “I love doing this program with children because children are always in front of the computer and that is stressful it its own ways,” Alakszay noted. “This brings people back. It’s really important.” Lily is certified through Therapy Dogs International. Alakszay said that certification training can take up to three years, noting that Lily has earned her American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen certificate and the See Honey Brook Library pg 7

Although Bridge of Hope Chester County is now part of a national organization and it has new leadership, the philosophy of the organization remains the same. “We are a nonprofit organization whose commitment is to end homelessness,” stated executive director Lisa Cameron. Prior to her appointment to Bridge of Hope in January, Cameron served as director of empowerment services at YWCA Lancaster from 2010 to 2019. Her work with the YWCA continues as a consultant with the YWCA USA for a pilot program that focuses on girls and women of color who have experienced trauma.
