The Coventry Food Pantry can trace its roots back to 1972, when the agency was formed to assist victims of Hurricane Agnes. Today, the all-volunteer-run organization continues to supply food and household goods to families and individuals in need who reside in the Owen J. Roberts (OJR) School District.

And, after being housed in the basement of the North Coventry Township Municipal Building, the pantry has relocated to 692 W. Schuylkill Road (Route 724), Unit 1, Pottstown. The pantry, which was housed in a 900-square-foot space, opened at the new location in June 2022, a former retail store measuring 2,500 square feet, nearly three times the size of the former site.

“We had to transport food, our freezers, refrigerators and all the shelving,” said food pantry director Ginny Wade, noting the move took about a month to complete. The work was carried out by volunteers, including Rick Ash and Brian Wade, pantry managers.

which includes peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned soup and instant mashed potatoes, along with fresh eggs and milk and cleaning and paper products. Fresh produce is provided by the Chester County Food Bank.

Due to the pandemic, the pantry started a drive-up distribution, which it still maintains. “They meet Brian in the back parking lot and fill out the paperwork, and they pull around and we talk to them briefly,” Ginny explained. “They don’t even have to get out of their cars.”

If something is happening in Chester County, Becky Brain, the public information officer, knows about it. And it is her responsibility to share it with the news media and the public, along with a host of other responsibilities. Brain recently shared information about what her job entails with the Community Courier.

C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : What are some of your job duties?

Brain: Those familiar with “government” titles might know that the public information office is really the communications office. So, as public information officer for Chester County government, I oversee all communications and media-related matters, including the county’s website, social media pages and the county’s weekly newsletter. I write - a lotwhether it’s press releases, newsletter stories, proclamations, letters of commendation and citations or information for the county commissioners’ speaking engagements.

C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : What is a typical day like?

Brain: On a typical day, I - along with my team - answer questions from reporters or set up interviews with the commissioners and county personnel. I write press releases, arrange press conferences and special events, prepare proclamations and citations and prepare presentations for the commissioners’ public meetings. I also respond to questions asked by county residents via email or phone calls.

The pantry holds its monthly food distribution on the first Tuesday of the month from 9 to 10 a.m. and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Those who register as clients and meet certain income requirements receive a wagon full of supplies,

About 55 to 65 families are served per month, which represents 200 to 250 individuals.

In addition to its regular distribution, the pantry offers a weekend backpack program. “The guidance counselors find kids who are struggling, and we supply them with a

backpack full of food for the weekend,” Brian explained, noting about 60 OJR students are given backpacks each week.

There are also special holiday distributions, including Christmas, when youngsters are provided with an assortment of gifts.

The pantry is always in need of food donations. Items can be placed in a bin located in the front of the building. Those with large quantities of items to donate may email coventryfoodpantry@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off time.

“We need canned pasta and canned meat like beef stew. We also run out of canned fruit quickly,”

said Ash, noting that cleaning products and personal care items are also accepted.

Ginny hopes that the community will continue to support the pantry in its new location. “We are so happy to be here and so happy to have moved, but we have so many more expenses here that we did not have before, like heating and electricity,” she said. “We are really relying on the community for food and monetary donations.”

Middle-schoolers who reside in Chester County are invited to take part in a Civics Bee that is being offered through the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry (CCCBI).

CCCBI is partnering with the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) to host the competition, which is designed to test students’ knowledge about civics that is “the study of the rights and obligations of citizens in society.” Students will be recognized and awarded cash prizes.

“This is our first year being involved with (the Civics Bee),” noted Marguerite DeGrassa, CCCBI director of marketing and communications, adding that the regional Civics Bee is part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s National Civics Bee competition.

In the first round of the contest, local sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade students will be asked to submit an essay. In the essay, students must identify a problem, challenge or opportunity in local communities and explain what can be done to improve it based on civic virtues and

founding principles. Civic virtues include moderation, respect and integrity, and the founding principles - core ideas of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution - include concepts such as inalienable rights.

In the 500-word essay, students may write about issues in their own neighborhoods, answering questions such as “Is there something in your community that you would like to change?” or “What service is currently missing from your community?”

The deadline for essay submissions is Friday, Feb. 24. Entries may be submitted by mailing a hard copy, postmarked by Feb. 24, to Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry, 1600 Paoli Pike, Malvern, PA 19355. A link to email the essays is available at www.facebook.com/chescochamber in a post dated Jan. 6.

Judges will select 20 finalists to participate in CCCBI’s local competition at the CCIU, 455 Boot Road, Downingtown, on Saturday, April 15, beginning at 10 a.m.

Similar to a spelling bee, the Civics Bee will feature contestants answering questions one at a time.

“It will be a live quiz event,” noted DeGrassa. The Civics Bee will feature special guest judges, including state

Rep. John Lawrence; Michael Hartman, chief of staff for state Sen. Carolyn Comitta; and Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline and Josh Maxwell. “More ‘celebrity’ judges are being added daily,” DeGrassa said.

Sample Civics Bee questions include “Which branch of government can declare war?” (legislative branch); How many justices are on the Supreme Court?” (nine); and “What year did women get the right to vote?” (1920).

After regional Civics Bees at five other locations in Pennsylvania, the top three students from each local competition will advance to the state competition in June.

For complete details about the Civics Bee, including the specific essay requirements, important dates and

cash prize information, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page or visit www.chescochamber.org and choose “Events” and then “Civics Bee.”

Meal Packing

During the event, volunteers will pack four dried ingredients - rice, lentils, dehydrated vegetables and a vitamin packet - in separate plastic pouches and then seal them. Once 36 packages are completed, they will go into a box and the packing will continue.

Shumaker noted that this is the first time that the church has taken part in the program, which is presented by Kids Around the World as part of its OneMeal program. A representative from the nonprofit organization, who is flying in from Texas, will be on hand at the church to explain the process.

“We are setting up 15 assembly lines. Each assembly line will feature two 8-foot tables, and each table will have eight to 10 people,” Shumaker explained. Volunteers will also serve as runners, replenishing rice and other ingredients as needed. “The food will come from a truck in Ohio, which is where the warehouse is. The (dry ingredients)

will come in 50-pound bags.”

The goal is to pack 60,000 meals, which can only be accomplished if community members agree to join the effort. “We are packing 60,000 meals in two hours if we have 150 (volunteers). We don’t have enough people just with (congregation members),” noted Shumaker. “This is totally a community outreach. It is something that is wonderful to do.”

Shumaker pointed out that the church held a designer purse bingo in November to fund the cost of the meal ingredients. “We had 175 women there,” she said. “We were only going to do 40,000 (meals), but we raised (enough) for 60,000 meals between bingo and people donating money.”

She said taking part in the meal packing can be a charitable activity for local families to take part in together. “It will be great for kids to get involved. It definitely is a family thing,” said Shumaker. “We want kids to know that for some, this is all the

(food) that they get. It’s important for us to do things like this.”

The packaged food will be picked up on Monday, Feb. 6, and eventually be distributed to children in need in Ecuador. “On average, one person can package about 365 meals in two hours, which means (one person) would pack meals to feed a child for an entire year,” Shumaker added.

Forks of the Brandywine Evangelical Presbyterian Church is located at 1648 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Glenmoore. To register for the event, visit www.forkschurch.org and click on the link under “One Meal Food Packing Day” on the left side of the homepage. Walk-ins will also be welcome.

For more information, contact the church office at 610-942-2626 or email shumakers@comcast.net.

Community Courier: What would people be surprised to learn about your job?

Brain: That this “government” job is exciting, varied and never dull!

Chester County government includes Emergency Services/the 9-1-1 Center, the Health Department, Human Service programs, County Parks + Preservation, Planning, Water Resources and Conservation, libraries, Voter Services and even Chester County’s Archive and Records

HCVHA

Services. So one day I can be writing about foster care and adoptions or programs in the county’s parks, and the next day I can be answering questions on the county’s elections, writing about affordable housing projects or even organizing events like the Chester County Color 5K.

C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : How long have you been in this job, and do you work at home or in an office?

B r a i n : I have been working in a communications role with Chester

County for 16 years and have been public information officer for nine of those years. Before the pandemic, I could access my work desktop from home, so the technology needed to work from home during COVID-19 was already in place. My role is currently hybrid.

Community Courier: What is your favorite part of the job?

Brain: It is difficult to pinpoint a favorite, but an aspect of the job that I really enjoy is the partnerships developed that help to expand and improve the county’s services to residents and

businesses. This includes partnerships with nonprofits, chambers of commerce, schools, municipalities, the first responder community and agencies like the Chester County Economic Development Council and the Conference and Visitors Bureau.

Community Courier: What do you do in your spare time?

Brain: I enjoy cooking, spending time with family, game nights and book clubs with friends. And I love to travel - throughout the U.S. or abroad and to (my family’s) former home in the UK.

Small Engine Service & Repair

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA), the nonprofit organization that maintains and operates Historic Joanna Furnace, is planning two “foodraiser” events.

The first is a Valentine’s Day Lasagna Dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The takeout meal will include a one-and-a-half-pound pan of lasagna, along with salad, bread and a homemade dessert. Each dinner is designed to serve one person.

Individuals can purchase meat, cheese or gluten-free lasagna. All dinners will be sold cold with heating instructions included.

Dinners can be picked up on Feb. 14 from noon to 5 pm. A cost will be charged per dinner. The deadline to order lasagna meals is Friday, Feb. 10.

The HCVHA is also offering a sale of homemade potato fastnachts on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from noon to 5 p.m. Fastnachts can be purchased per dozen or half dozen. The order deadline is Feb. 14.

Historic Joanna Furnace is located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. To preorder lasagna dinners or fastnachts, visit www.haycreek.org /food-raiser. All food items must be ordered in advance.

Net proceeds will support the education, research, restoration and preservation of Historic Joanna Furnace and the Tri-County Heritage Library. For additional information, visit www.haycreek.org, search for “Hay Creek Valley Historical Association” on Facebook or call 610-286-0388.
