Each year in May, a giant flea market is presented by the Blazer Education Foundation at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St., Birdsboro. To prepare for the event, which benefits students in the Daniel Boone Area School District, monthly donation drives are
held throughout the year so that volunteers can gather items to be sold at the event. The most recent donation drive was held on Jan 10. Items that were collected from the community included gently used household goods, clothing, toys and furniture. The Little Free Library (LFL) initiative started in 2009 in Hudson, Wis., when Todd Bol built a small book-sharing box in the shape of a one-room schoolhouse as a tribute to his late mother, who was a teacher and loved to read. Today, book-sharing boxes in all shapes and sizes can be found worldwide and are managed by stewards, who build and install the boxes and then maintain them by assuring that they are filled with books for both children and adults. Many add other small items to share as well, including small toys or bookmarks. Locally, the newest box, with the motto of “ Take a book, share a book,” has been built and installed by Autumn and Tommy Rinck of Narvon, who are calling their box “The Backroad Bookshelf ” because of its rural location. Along with homemade bookmarks, the box also contains a jar of dog treats because of the couple’s love of dogs. Those who visit the box are invited to sign their name in a guestbook if they choose. Autumn explained that she has a great love of books and reading and wanted to share books with others. “I like anything from romance to thrillers,” she said, noting that she frequently visited LFLs throughout the area. “I always went to Little Free Libraries, and I always wanted to make one. We moved here two years ago. We were from (New) Jersey, and we lived on a highway, and See Readers pg 5

aving a Seeing Eye dog can give visually impaired people a feeling of independence by providing them with a way to more safely navigate their environment. A dog can also offer them an increased sense of confidence and security, as well as friendship. T hese speci al companionships would not be possible without the help of puppy raisers, who agree to welcome a future guide dog into their homes, teaching them basic manners and obedience skills. One local puppy raiser is Kelly Hersh of Mohnton, who is currently working with Olly, a 9-week-old golden retriever. The area coordinator brought the puppy to the family on Dec. 22, 2025, from The Seeing Eye, located in Morristown, N.J. “We have him for about a year,” said Hersh. “We will teach him the basic commands - sit, down, come, rest, forward and stay back, like when you are walking through a door

In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures we ekend fo o d pack program that feeds 1,500 k ids each week ; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, ser ving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.
She said that those interested in becoming a puppy raiser may visit https:// seeingeye.org/puppy -raising for more details. “Kids can raise puppies for school projects,” Hersh s t a te d . “ I f p e o p l e a re worried about working, sometimes you can take your puppy to work with you. A lot of teachers and school staff can raise puppies, and some office settings (allow) you to take your puppy to work. You are not necessarily limited based off your occupation.” She said that raising a Seeing Eye dog is a family tradition. “With me and my husband this is No. 2, but my family started (raising puppies) when I was 2 years old. It is No. 19 (total for the family),” said Hersh. The previous puppy that Hersh raised went back to The Seeing Eye in August. “The one we raised before (Olly) is in formal training now. We have gotten some postcards from his trainer letting us know how he is doing in training, and we will get his graduation picture,” Hersh shared. “We will go for what they call ‘a town walk,’ where we g o to Mo r r i s to w n , N.J., and we get to see him working in harness. The hard part is we can’t go up to him. We have to stay a good distance back, so he does not hear or see us. But we get to see him working , and it will be awesome.”

Mack Tomlinson has been a Baptist minister of the gospel for 51 years. He served four churches in pastoral ministry since 1977. Mack served as a pastoring elder at Providence Chapel in Denton Texas since 2000 and now exercises a wider itinerary ministry in the U.S. and other countries consistently, as pastor emeritus and member of Providence Chapel. Mack has been married to his wife, Linda, for 47 years and they have 6 children, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

each other and check how each other is doing.” The most emotional par t o f the pro cess is when the year is over and the dog is returned to The Seeing Eye. “That is the hardest part - watching that puppy climb in that van and leave - it breaks your heart ever y time,” said Hersh. “But because you talk to the students a n d g ra d u a t e s o f T h e Seeing Eye, you hear the stories of how their first guide dog gave them so much freedom, so much independence. They felt like they were unstoppable because they had this dog beside them.” When Olly is “working,” people will be asked not to interact with him. “When he is young like this, you can pet him. He is wearing a band ana ,” Hersh noted. “When he turns 6 months old and he shows good behavior, he will get a vest. Generally, at that point, we don’t let people pet him, so the dog understands the vest (means) worktime.” The family will eventually know when the dog has been placed with a visually impaired person. “ They will match the personality of the dog to the student,” Hersh said. “They will tell us if they are placed with a man or women, that person’s age and occupation and the state they live in. For privacy, we don’t get too many details.”

that opens towards you.” The dog will also learn socialization skills, including how to act around other people and o ther p e ts . “ We teach good manners and social skills - behaving in public, behaving properly around other dogs, not jumping on people and staying off the furniture,” Hersh said, adding the family also has two pet dogs of its own. “(My do gs) help teach social skills and how to socialize with other dogs.” Olly is also learning how to go on car rides. “ We have to teach him to sit on the floor, but he is getting good with it. We give him a blanket and he curls up and goes to sleep,” she noted. Hersh is part of a support group that currently meets at the County Meadows Retirement Community in Wyomissing. In warmer weather, the meeting locations will change to other sites, including outdoor venues. “Every county has their own club. The Berks County raisers do an outing every month,” she explained. “It could be anything from a presentation at a school or a library to mini golf, a basketball game, a hayride or a corn maze. Sometimes we will go to Cabela’s for a scavenger hunt.” “(During the meetings) we go over our schedules and go over our outings for the nex t couple of months,” she added. “We talk about issues we may be having, get advice from

Specialty items offered for sale in May will include a large dollhouse, aquariums and children’s furniture. “For most of the items, unless it is something that is more valuable, (shoppers pay) what they want,” explained Ochis. “It is a lot of work, and you need a lot of space to (display) things. A week before (the flea market), volunteers and different teachers start setting up in the old gym. Students also help with moving some of the stuff (from the storage area into the gym).” According to Lisa Kieke, executive director of the Blazer Education Foundation, all proceeds benefit students in the Daniel Boone Area School District. “All of the money that we raise is used for innovative programming and things we can bring into the school for the students. We raise money that is above and beyond the school district budget,” she said. “We have different projects that we fund. We can bring in a speaker from outside. It takes things to
the next level.” For example, the foundation helped to purchase items such as a 3D printer, drones and equipment for the high school podcast room. It also presents yearly scholarships to graduating seniors. “ Te ac h e r s c a n a p p l y for grants to fund extra projects for their classes,” Ochis added. “(We have gotten robots for students to learn how to code. A science teacher, years ago, (requested funds) to do a coral reef project.” Kieke noted that the foundation started raising money by collecting clothing and then donating it to organizations that paid for it by the pound. “We started doing that early on, and Goodwill would come and pay for a gaylord (container) of stuff. We thought, ‘Why don’t we try a flea market and see how that goes?’” she said. In addition to being sold at the flea market, some donated clothing is given to people in need, including Daniel B oone students. “We donate some of the items to Caring Closets at the high school
and middle school, so if students need clothing, it is available to them,” Kieke said. “ We donate extra clothes to the school nurses (for students) who need a change of clothes. We work with some local churches; if there is a need in the community, we will help.” The next scheduled donation dr ive will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. Donors are asked to bring their items to the back of the high school where the loading dock is located at Door No. 18. Items that can be donated include jewelr y, books, CDs and DVDs, artwork, antiques, sporting goods and bicycles. We went and bought the materials, and we built it in the garage over a couple of weekends,” said Tommy, adding, “ We even decorated it for Christmas.” The box still remains lit at night with small twinkle lights. In order to anchor the box , the couple placed its support beam into a bucket filled with cement rather than placing it into the ground. “(We used) a five-gallon bucket, and we stuck it in the planter and put stone in the bottom of the planter with dirt on top,” Autumn explained. “That way if we move, we can take it with us,” Tommy noted. The Twin Valley Rotary Club has selected Twin Valley High School (TVHS) students Grace Kelly and Drew Engle as its Students of the Month for December. Each month during the school year, the Twin Valley Rotary Club honors two students of the month from TVHS. The seniors are selected by guidance counselors, teachers and staff members at the school. At T VHS , Grace has taken multiple Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes. She is the president of the Tri-M Music Honors Society, vice president and concertmaster of orchestra, events coordinator for chorus, blood drive coordinator for HOSA, secretary of the Theater Arts Club and co-vice president of the senior class. Grace is also involved in the Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, String Septet, String Ensemble, Select Chorus and tennis. She played a lead role in the fall play and will also be in this year’s spring musical, “Cinderella.” Grace has a strong passion for music, especially playing the piano. She frequently accompanies the chorus, instrumentalists and fellow students and has taken piano lessons for 13 years. Grace auditioned for and participated in the Berks County Orchestra and Chorus, as well as district chorus in her junior year.

As a sophomore, Grace attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. She also traveled to New Orleans for an Evangelical Lutheran Church of America youth event, where she participated in community service and learned about leadership and other cultures. Grace hopes to attend Penn State University, majoring in kinesiology on a pre-medicine track while minoring in music. Grace’s career goal is to become a pediatrician. Drew is a dual-sport competitor in football and lacrosse, and he maintains an academic record above a 4.0 GPA. In football, Drew set multiple school records, including the marks for most career rushing yards, most single-season rushing yards and most career touchdowns. His performance and leadership helped earn him the title of Berks County Football Player of the Year. Drew is equally accomplished in lacrosse. He has served as team captain, and his efforts were recognized with major honors, including Berks County Lacrosse Player of the Year and being named an All-American athlete. Drew plans to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he will play Division I lacrosse. After graduating from West Point, he will continue his path of service by joining the United States Army.
