Inorder to encourage more community members to join, the Stitches Craft Group, which was formed at Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church, is now meeting at the Village Library of Morgantown.
The group, which gathers at the library on the fourth Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon, is free and open to people of all ages who knit or crochet or who want to learn. All supplies are included, or sewers may bring in their own projects.
The next meeting of the Stitches Craft Group will be on Saturday, Jan. 28. Snacks are provided each month, and each meeting begins with a Christian devotional reading from the book “Knit, Purl, Pray.”
According to Kara Campbell, who is a group leader along with Brenda Pearsall, the Stitches Craft Group began at MCC in February 2017. The group moved its meetings to the library in October 2022.
“Brenda goes to the library and (noticed) that they have a (community) room,” Campbell explained. “So
we went in and spoke with Maria (Long, library director), about it. (We shared) what our goals were and how we wanted to reach out to the community outside of the church and get other people involved and that is how (it came about).”
When the craft group began at MCC, one of its goals was to provide articles of clothing for people in need. “We had two goals. The first goal was to create handmade items such as scarfs and hats for the community - to create and donate.”
Campbell said. “The other goal for the group was to bring people inanyone new coming to the church or from outside the church.”
After its formation, the group completed several projects. It donated handmade items to Anchored Ministries of Elverson, which maintains a collection bin at MCC. “We also made washcloths out of cotton and put a bar or bottle of soap with them and (a message from) Scripture for (clients of) the Twin Valley Food Pantry, and we made lap blankets for Sunny Crest Home,” Campbell noted. “We try to stay local.”
At the library, group members are working on various projects. “We are trying to expand it to other crafts. There are some people who bring in their looms,” said Campbell. “(People who sew) can bring in their sewing projects or their hand-stitched projects.”
She emphasized that no sewing experience is necessary to join the group. “Our whole goal is to not have people see our group and think they can’t (attend) if they can’t crochet or knit,” said Campbell. “I teach (people) to crochet, and there are knitters there (to teach).”
She added that new members have joined the group since it moved from MCC. “We made a couple of friends already by having Stitches in the library,” Campbell shared. “A woman from the neighborhood came with her little girl. She frequents the library and is now learning to crochet.”
The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For more information about the craft group, email kara.campbell 48@gmail.com.

February from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The meetings on Feb. 4, March 4, and April 1 will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), in Honey Brook. The remaining meetings on May 6, June 3, and July 1 will be held at Line It Up Farm in Coatesville.
“If socioeconomically or where they are located doesn’t lend for (horse) ownership, it a great opportunity for them to have that experience,” said 4-H Extension education Audrey Reith. “We hope that it leads to a lifelong interest.”
The first several club meetings will focus on horse safety guidelines, identifying and locating 30 external parts of the horse and making model horse tack, among other activities. “We will discuss markings and color patterns on a horse,” Reith said. “We will learn about bridles and saddles, and they will make bridles for a model horse.”
In subsequent meetings, Amy Pippin from Line It Up Farm will bring a horse for hands-on activities. Children will learn how to
approach the horse, grooming techniques, how to clean a horse’s hooves and how to properly tie, saddle, bridle, unsaddle and unbridle a horse.
Reith said that the Windy Hollow 4-H Club is a longstanding club in the county, but is being revitalized to attract new members. “Amy has been a longtime volunteer, and she is restarting the club with children new to equine programs,” said Reith. “This gives kids an opportunity they may never get.”
Reith noted that each child will be given personalized attention when meeting a live horse. “Every child is gradually introduced to make sure they feel safe and secure,” she said. “When they do meet the horse, it’s their choice to lead it or learn to groom it.”
Another club that is currently meeting at the 4-H Center is the Cloverbuds, a program for children ages 5 to 7. Upcoming meetings will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Feb. 4 and Saturdays, Feb. 18 and March 4 and 18.
Cloverbuds enjoy age-appropriate activities to learn about animal, plant and environmental sciences and take part in STEM activities.
At the club’s first meeting on Jan. 7, children built small flashlights and decorated T-shirts.
“The horse will be on hand at the Feb. 4 (Cloverbuds) meeting for an equine program and craft activities,” Reith noted. Future meetings will include making butter or ice cream, learning about robotics and meeting sheep and swine.
For more information or to register for the programs, visit https://4h.zsuite.org and choose “Sign Up” to begin the registration process. “You have to create a family profile and then create an avatar for each kid (in
the family),” Reith noted. “They can enroll in the clubs they want to be in, and we can match them with their interests.”

“Most of our families and veterans have been homeless before they get to us. They work with housing agencies like Housing Authority (of Chester County) or (Chester County) Human Services or Home of the Sparrow. (The housing agencies) help with housing and they bring them to us for the furniture,” Brion explained. “The beauty of this is that all of those agencies were struggling on their own in the past to try and find things for their clients. We take that off of their shoulders.”
recipients receive pots and pans; linens, including towels, curtains, sheets and comforters; silverware; and small appliances like toasters.
According to its 2022 year-end report, CWP served more than 1,100 Chester County residents, which includes 424 households, 74 veterans and 509 children. In addition, 650 beds were distributed in 2022. “We serve an average of six to 10 families a week,” Brion noted.

Roman Appointed To Direct WDB
Jeannette Roman has been named director of Chester County’s Workforce Development Board (WDB) by Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell, and Michelle Kichline. Roman has worked for the WDB since 2010, most recently as the acting director.
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the backbone of WDBs, became law in 2014 with a mission of keeping the nation’s jobs pipeline filled with qualified and diverse workers - all while helping businesses and improving the quality of life for workers. Among the goals of WIOA are to increase access to education, training, and employment, particularly for those with barriers to employment, and to reduce welfare depen-
dency and increase economic self-sufficiency. Out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Chester County is one of 23 that have WDBs.
Roman was raised in Chester County and now lives in the Coatesville area with her four children.
Bedell Named To Chancellor’s List
Sam Bedell was named to the summer 2022 chancellor’s list at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), Fairbanks, Alaska. Bedell is a
resident of Birdsboro.
Students receiving a 3.9 grade point average or higher are placed on the chancellor’s list.
CWP stores an assortment of donated furniture and household items in two warehouse spaces donated by EKahn Development Corporation. “When we were doing it initially, people came in and shopped, and they were responsible for taking their own stuff home because we didn’t have anyone to deliver it,” Brion said. “When we stopped having them come in (because of the pandemic), we had to get the furniture to them. (Chester) County supplied some funding for us to pay a mover. We now deliver everything, which is so much better because so many people had a really hard time getting transportation to pick up the stuff.”
In addition to furniture,
Brion said that she is pleased by how much CWP has grown. “I didn’t know what to expect, and it has all happened organically. We needed more (furniture), and we were able to get more,” she said. “We have been able to serve any client that comes to us. We have been able to help them with 95% of what they ask for.”
“One of the things that makes me very proud of what we do here is that not only is (the furniture) going to help people, but we are saving it from the landfill. It is pretty awesome,” she added.
CWP is currently in need of donations, especially microwaves and vacuum cleaners. For donation information, visit www .communitywarehouse project.com or www.face book.com/CWPCC or call 484-473-4360.

Few sights in nature can compare to a pristine blanket of white snow covering the countryside. Unfortunately, a wonderland of snow conceals dangers related to slips and falls, shoveling, and even
overdoing winter sports. The good news is that with some preparation many injuries may be avoided.
Zachary Wagner, a physical therapist in the rehabilitation wing at Fairmount in Ephrata sees a variety of injuries during the winter months. “The biggest thing is falls,” said Wagner, who noted that hip and femoral fractures are common as are rotator cuff and back issues related to shoveling.
To help prevent injuries, Wagner recommends a yearround regimen to increase strength, balance, and flexibility. Both aerobic and endurance exercises are good choices, and stretching is always recommended. “Stretching is a big thing, especially in winter,” said Wagner. “When it’s cold out, muscles tend to tighten up.” So loosening up for sports activities or tasks like shoveling can make a difference. “If you’re not stretching and you’re not used to strenuous activity, you put yourself at
risk for strain or tendonitis,” Wagner noted.
Footwear that is appropriate for the weather is another concern. Wagner recommends nonslip, nonskid shoes with rubber soles that are not too worn and that fit well. Arch support may be necessary to help some improve their gait and avoid falls. Dressing for the weather means layering warm clothing and wearing gloves. This is especially important for those who participate in winter sports and anticipate being outside for extended periods of time.
Shoveling is a necessity for many, but it is also an activity that can lead to several types of injuries. When shoveling, Wagner said to watch your posture. “Use your knees and hips,” he advised. “Keep your back straight, and don’t lift more than you can handle.”
Because cold weather can increase chances of injury, avoid sudden twists. Instead, take extra steps to move snow. “Listen to your body,” cautioned Wagner, who recommended breaks to warm up every 10 to 15 minutes.

Do’s And Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss
Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and
Strategies For Organization
When the new year arrives, many people focus on changes that can be implemented in the months to come. This time of year is a popular one to make resolutions to clean and organize homes and offices.
There are plenty of things that can use a little organizational attention. There’s no ideal way to get organized. Getting organized can be as simple as taking small steps that have lasting impact. Whatever works is a good approach, but the following are six strategies to help individuals clear the clutter.
First, utilize to-do lists. People tend to be less productive when they store all of their tasks in their brains. The first step to getting organized is to remove those plans from the head and put them down on paper or in some other tracking tool. A digital to-do list manager, for example, enables people
metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health
benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.
DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
DO speak with a doctor if
exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.
DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the
most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

Glaucoma Resources Available
In observance of National Glaucoma Awareness Month, January, Prevent Blindness is offering a variety of resources for glaucoma patients and their caregivers at www.Pre ventBlindness.org/glaucoma. The resources include educational content, fact sheets, and shareable graphics.
Among the available resources is The Glaucoma Community, which provides users with a newsfeed on glaucoma, a community chat, a Facebook page, educational materials in several languages, and more. The Glaucoma Community may be accessed by visiting the aforementioned website and looking under “Glaucoma” in the list
on the left side of the page. Additionally, Prevent Blindness recently updated and redesigned its “Living Well With Low Vision” resource, created for patients, caregivers, and health care professionals. The site offers free directories, a library of selfhelp guides, downloadable apps, and news that may be relevant to people living with glaucoma and significant visual impairment.
Also new this year is a free webpage and downloadable fact sheet, “Glaucoma Financial Assistance Information,” designed specifically to help people receive access to the eye care services they need to help save their sight.
Safety
Another precaution, which is especially important for seniors, is keeping up to date on physicals and eye examinations to be sure prescription medications and eyewear are correct. Be aware that over-the-counter cold and flu remedies can cause drowsiness and increase chances of stumbling. It is not only seniors who need to be more careful during the harsher months. Wagner noted, “(Winter) injuries can happen to anyone.”
Fairmount is a nonprofit retirement community located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://fairmount homes.org.
AHMEC Participates In Toys For Tots
The American Helicopter Museum & Education Center (AHMEC) recently participated in the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive for the second consecutive year. Beginning in October, AHMEC start-
ed collecting donations, with the goal of gathering 120 gifts by Dec. 15. This goal was easily met as the museum offered discounts on admission, as well as museum gift shop toy purchases to help the cause.
The museum collected 137 toys, an increase of more than 200% from last year’s total. For more information about AHMEC, call 610-4369600 or visit www.american helicopter.museum.

to see all their tasks, deadlines, and due dates in one place so they can get things done more efficiently. Consider carrying around a notepad or using the digital notes app on a phone to jot down thoughts and needs as they come up.
Second, it is a good strategy to corral one’s “smalls.” Smalls are keys, phones, chargers, wallets, headphones, and other accessories. When these items are grouped together, they are easier to find and allow one to stay on track. Invest in an attractive organizer and install it by the front door or another high-traffic area. It will cut down on trying to find those smaller items when running errands.
It is important to conquer clutter regularly. It is easy to put off cleaning and organizing when clutter has
gotten out of control. Instead, by cleaning up items on a daily or weekly basis, it is much easier to keep ahead of clutter. Combatting clutter should be treated like a daily job, including sorting mail and tossing unnecessary items, emptying waste pails, dusting the desk, deleting emails, and putting items back where they belong.
Another strategy is to categorize emails. Individuals can utilize the folder creation option from popular email providers to sort messages. Messages that need attention can then be dropped into categories of one’s choosing, such as school, health, and receipts. Then an individual will know which folder to go into when searching for what they need, eliminating the timeconsuming task of scrolling
through a full inbox.
When bringing new items into the home, follow the procedure of giving away or throwing out one item for each new item that is received or purchased. This can help to tame clutter.
“Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere. Clothing can be laid out on the dresser for the next day at work or school. The foyer of a home can be prepped with items one may need, like an umbrella, shoes, and paperwork. Backpacks can be organized so they are ready for the school day.
Establishment of a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home can also save time by keeping things organized.

Christmas Tree Disposal Tips
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently encouraged people to dispose of their Christmas trees promptly after the holiday season, as Christmas trees are large, combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires. The longer Christmas trees remain in homes, the longer they present a risk. Fresh Christmas trees, which continue to dry out and become more flammable over time, are involved in a much larger share of reported Christmas
tree fires than artificial trees.
To safely dispose of a Christmas tree, NFPA recommends using the local community’s recycling program, if possible. Trees should not be put in the garage or left outside.
NFPA also offered several tips for safely removing lighting and decorations to ensure that they remain in good condition. The gripping area on the plug should be used when unplugging electrical decorations. People should never pull the cord to unplug any device from an electrical out-
Rural Development Grants Available
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development will accept grant applications for the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program to help people in rural and tribal communities access remote education and health care resources. The DLT program helps fund real-time, interactive distance learning and telemedicine services in rural and tribal areas to increase access to education, training, and health care resources that are otherwise limited or unavailable.
For instance, the DLT program gives students the opportunity to participate in classes that may be in places that are too far to access. DLT funds can also help connect rural people virtually to medical professionals without leaving their home.
USDA plans to make $64
million available in fiscal year 2023. Of this amount, $12 million is intended for projects that provide substance use disorder treatment services to people in rural areas.
Eligible applicants include state and local governmental entities, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits, and forprofit businesses. Applications must be submitted electronically through www .grants.gov by Monday, Jan. 30. For additional information, visit www.rd.usda.gov and look under Programs and Services for Telecommunications Programs and then click on Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants.
USDA is offering priority points to projects that meet certain criteria. These extra points will increase the likelihood of funding. For more information, visit www.rd .usda.gov/priority-points.
let, as this can harm the wire and insulation of the cord, increasing the risk for shock or electrical fire. Light strings should be inspected for damage when packing them away, and people should throw out any sets that have loose connections, broken sockets, or cracked or bare wires. Each set of lights should be wrapped and placed in an individual plastic bag or
wrapped around a piece of cardboard. Electrical decorations should be stored in a dry place away from children and pets to reduce the risk of damage.
For more information about winter fire safety in the home, visit www.nfpa.org, click on Seasonal Fire Causes under Public Education and select the “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign.
Pet Adoption Event Planned
