WhileTel Hai Camp & Retreat in Honey Brook is known for its summer camping activities for youths, the site offers year-round programs, including food fundraisers, where the community is invited to enjoy homemade meals prepared by kitchen staff.
Most recently, the facility held a traditional New Year’s pork and sauerkraut dinner on Jan. 2. More than 100 people purchased a meal, which was served in a drive-up format by Tel Hai staff members and volunteers. The dinner included pork and sauerkraut, homemade mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade applesauce, a dinner roll and dessert.
Some of the food items were donated, including a variety of apples provided by Weaver’s Orchard and potatoes donated by Mast Farms,
both located in Morgantown.
Prior events included chicken potpie and chicken barbecue drivethrough dinners, as well as a Fiesta Friday dinner that included tacos and Spanish rice. The next scheduled food fundraiser will be a lasagna dinner set for Friday, March 10.
Like other nonprofit organizations, Tel Hai began serving driveup meals because of the pandemic. “We had a spaghetti supper every September and because we couldn’t do it inside, we did a lasagna driveup,” explained Bruce Gregory, Tel Hai program director. “Last year, we did a food fundraiser nearly every month, sometimes in connection with Tel Hai Retirement Community, (located across the street from the camp).”
Tel Hai Camp & Retreat, situated on a 150-acre property, includes wooded areas, open fields and a lake. The site includes a zip line, a
climbing wall in the gymnasium, a basketball and street hockey court, a miniature golf course and a gaga ball court.
Camp offerings for 2023 include a Dad Lad Camp for fathers and their 8- to 13-year-old sons and a Mother Daughter Spring Getaway.
In addition, the site is available for retreats for members of churches, Christian schools and like organizations. “Some people think the camp is closed (outside of the summer months),” added Brian Williamson, Tel Hai executive director. “We have a summer camp season and a retreat season.”
Tel Hai Camp, a member of the Chirstian Camp and Conference Association, is located at 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, visit www.telhaicamp.org or www.facebook.com/TelHai CampRetreat or call the office at 610-273-3969.

“Phenomenal” and “impressive” were two of the words used to describe the Christmas light display at the home of Charles “Bud” Hannum Jr., who is the 2022 residential winner of “Deck the Brook,” a holiday decorating contest presented annually by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP).
Judging took place on Dec. 21 at residences and businesses that had registered for the contest. The panel of judges included HBCP members Cathie Thompson, director of business development at Hickory House Nursing Home; Kristi Deischer-Eddy, Honey Brook Township administrator; Jen Simmet, senior branch manager at M&T Bank; and Dawn Schaffer, a member of the Honey Brook Library board of directors.

Those who decorated a live Christmas tree this year are encouraged to put the tree to good use now that the holiday season is over.
Victoria Laubach, executive director of the Green Valleys Watershed Association, recommends that homeowners place their trees in the yard, where they can be used as a shelter for birds as well as an outdoor feeding station. “You can put (the tree) up outside and hang bird feeders from it,” she said, noting See Christmas Tree pg 2

that homeowners are reminded to remove all tinsel, ornaments and decorations from the tree before placing it outdoors.
Items that can be placed on the tree include pinecones coated in peanut butter and then rolled in bird seed, as well as suet cakes, strings of popcorn and orange slices. These items can be replenished throughout the winter season.
they should not be burned indoors. “They don’t generally make good firewood because they have a lot of sap and can spark a lot,” Laubach noted.
However, according to the Arbor Day Foundation, evergreens can be burned outdoors and the remaining ash can be spread on gardens. Wood ash contains nutrients to help the soil and can keep insects away.

Shortly after Thanksgiving 2022, Lou Ann Miller, who coordinates the displays for the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) Museum, began clearing out an exhibit to make room for a collection of metal toys produced by J. Chein & Company beginning in 1903. The display overflows two cases into two smaller additional displays. Miller wanted the toys to be on exhibit for children and parents who visited during the holidays, but the colorful pieces of children’s playthings collected by Liz Bicking and her late husband, Lawrence, will be on display into the spring and maybe the summer.
Before setting up the exhibit, Miller researched the toy manufacturer, which was started in Manhattan by Julius Chein, an immigrant from Russia of Jewish descent. The company made small, metal stamped toys, which at first were hand painted. “Later it was lithographs,” said Miller, an artist herself, who called the artwork and lithographs “beautiful.”
The company grew quickly, moving to Harrison, N.J., in 1907 and boasting 300 employees by 1913. J. Chein’s marketing and distribution brought the company into notable associations that propelled it forward, including an exclusive partnership with F. W. Woolworth and a contract to put small metal toys, such as whistles, in boxes of Cracker Jacks.
The Chein company was known for toys such as sand buckets and funnels, but by 1915, Julius had acquired a patent for a bank that flashed the amount of a deposited coin when it was slipped through the slot. The company also produced extra-large toys in its Hercules line, which Miller said were heavy gauge and up to 18 inches long.
When Julius died in 1926, his wife, Elizabeth, became president, but by 1931, the company was struggling. Enter Samuel Hoffman, Elizabeth’s brother and founder of a competing
toy manufacturer. Miller expressed her admiration for the toys produced during Hoffman’s stint running the company, noting that the plant made metal Easter rabbits and chicks, spinning tops, and spring-wound toys during that time period.
In 1942, the company aided the World War II effort by making
Laubach said that tree branches can also be used to protect perennial gardens from “frost heaving,” which is when plants lift up or “heave” from the soil due to fluctuations in temperature. “You can cut the branches and lay them on top of a perennial garden. It helps insulate the ground - like mulch - and keeps the perennials from heaving up out of the ground,” she explained. “It’s an old technique, and it is used for helping your perennial garden when the temperatures go from warm to freezing cold.”
She said that shredded trees can be used as mulch for gardens or garden paths, but
Another tip offered by the foundation is to submerge trees in local ponds or lakes in area parks. With permission from the property owner or park officials, trees can become a haven for fish, protecting them from predators.
Algae that grows on the trees underwater can also feed fish.
Further, the foundation suggests stripping needles from Christmas tree branches and storing them in small bags to use as air fresheners or sachets.
“All that work goes into growing the tree, and it has all these benefits. Just to see it go into the landfill is sad,” Laubach added.

Decorating Contest
“(The winner) had to stand out and catch your eye. (The Hannum) place was phenomenal,” said Schaffer. “He has been trying to win for years and this is the first year that he won, and he was so happy.”
Schaffer also announced that Ford’s Notary, 3041 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, was the business winner of the contest and the best door prize was awarded to Honey Brook resident Dan Brooks, whose home earned an honorable mention last year.
Hannum’s impressive display features lights that are synchronized to holiday
music. “I have a box outside that plays music and all the lights go to different outlets,” he explained. “They turn on and turn off all (in time) to the music.”
The home features multicolored lights placed on trees and bushes and even the roof, as well as lighted reindeer, Christmas trees, Christmas packages and candy canes. “The blue/purple lights are new this year,” Hannum noted.
Hannum has been decorating his home with synchronized lights and music since 2007. “I start (putting up the lights) the day after Thanksgiving and have all
of them up by Dec. 1,” he said, noting that this is the fifth time he has entered the HBCP contest. “One year it was raining and a breaker tripped and they called me to turn on the lights but I wasn’t home. Last year, they had people vote and I am on a dead-end street at the end of a deadend road and they probably (couldn’t find it).”
A video of the display set to music can be found at www.facebook.com/bud. hannum. “A still photo doesn’t do it justice,” Hannum said.

war materials such as munitions and casings for incendiary devices. The first items the organization produced in 1946 utilized a bazooka rocket nose cone repurposed into a bank.
By the 1960s, the company was producing metal toys emblazoned with likenesses of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters. “(The display) traces the history of toys,” noted Miller, who pointed out that America’s changing taste in playthings for children is reflected inthe exhibit. Facing competition from plastic toys and criticism from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for sharp edges on some toys, J.
